With scent control, you must also remember to cover the scent coming out of your mouth. Your mouth and the meal that you ate the night before and the day of, will contribute to the animal smelling you. Make sure you get scent control for your mouth. A merino wool neck gaitor is a good choice. Duct tape will also work :)

+Jeremiah Rawson I've always thought it was so comical that we keep our clothes in air tight containers. Wash with scent free detergent. Shower with scent free soap. Use scent blocker spray .....Then eat sausage biscuits and drink coffee on the way to the property. LOL Im guilty.

I use cover scents with great success. I agree with everything else you say and practice strict scent control.

The one thing you missed is deer see blue extremely well, what I mean by that is a pair of blue jeans looks like safety orange to a deer.

Depends on the woods too. Like on my little place. On my 175 acres Im always on it feeding stock or doing something. The deer just kinda stay away but not leave because they are use to MY smells. If someone else trys to hunt they dont see much. In the big swamps if they even smell where you were, you wont see a deer in daylight.

Thanks Devin. Whitetails here in Mich have become conditioned at an early age to avoid human intrusion because of negative experiences at an early age due to the brown its down mentality.

Great lessons here. Best hunt ever was after being careful with diet for three days prior and taking care of all the other things we typically assume. Ate natural foods, nothing greasy, fried, or alcoholic. Took chlorophyll tablets, lots of water. Effectively paid attention to diet to get the toxins out of my system. Many times had deer just walk right on by without noticing us. This was in NE PA, a difficult area to hunt for us.

I had learned several years ago that a flowing river or creek of any size will actually pull sent along with the current so if you're hunting a creek bottom in your relatively close to the water your scent will actually go with the current regardless of which way the wind is blowing now the wind strong enough obviously all bets can be off. I've got a creek bottom on my farm that I hunt in the stand is located in an area where I have to have a Southwest wind a West wind or northwest wind that blows my scent out into the pasture to strip of woods goes along the creek and I have had deer bust me directly crosswind from me because my scent was drifting with the current but the wind was in my face

We have a very long deer season here. gives most hunters multiple chances to see many different deer from october through january long season tends to cut down on the "brown is down" mentality plenty of chances to use scouting cameras and plan for the rut when the mature trophy bucks show themselves although we have oil field teams and cattle ranchers around most hunting areas, the deer tend to ignore ranch trucks and oil field equipment. they know a moving vehicle is not a real threat, but if you stop and get out!! they are gone... Hunting hogs will teach someone a great deal about scent control and wind directions as well as thermals You can not fool a pigs nose!! If they can find truffles underground, they can smell coffee and a doughnut on your breath! thanks Devin

There are some wild flower looking weeds that give off a strong flower smell. I pick those up on my way in and along my hunt and stick them in my pocket, and rub some on once and a while.

you should try to hunt with my dad... first off he is almost deaf at the age of 84, so, as soon as we get on sight, and separate about 100 yards, he yells at the top of his lungs, asking me something that i cannot understand for about 10minutes... somehow i get lucky about every other year or so.

well i tell ya start drinking 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar the unfiltered kind mixed in 8 ounces of water and 1 teaspoon of honey every morning and every night before bed it will help cover your scent when you sweat plus it is healthy for you because it lowers cholesterol and blood pressure plus other health benefits. Then you can keep using a good cover scent or scent killer spray on your boots and clothes and when you are not hunting hang your clothes outside in a open area like on a clothesline. I started doing all of this last year and it worked great for me and i had deer coming all around me all season and none of them smelled me.

Nice article. I am glad there are so many idiots commenting below telling you how wrong you are to worry about scent control. That leaves more of the big deer untouched for those of us who do use it. Until these guys take a 150 class or bigger buck with a BOW, they should keep their opinions to themselves.

I agree with you but I have a point to make. You started seeing all these deer after you retired and had more time. That could have something to do with it.

im located in north georgia, even with a gun you are typically within 50 yards when a deer comes in range due to extreme underbrush. i started hunting at about 12 yrs old but took a break for about 6 years, got back into it heavily at about 23 and quickly realized how much i needed scent control, and i saw 3 to 4 times the amount of deer last year than what i had ever seen. great video, learned several things i can improve upon.

looks like you did not make part 2 I checked your channel to make sure, it would be very much appreciated and extremely helpful if you could tell us how you solved your scent from your boots, I had exact same problem hunting the dumbest dear, had a button buck come down the trail smelled the exact spot where I had stood backed up his trail and made his way somewhere else without alarm, so I know it had to be my boots because I touched nothing else

A deer may first detect a hunters by smell but that just puts the animal on alert. It needs a second stimuli before it bolts.

Not the big boys. They need no 2nd stimuli. They usually don't hang around to figure out whats up, like a doe or young buck will. If they sense somethings up, they're gone. Unless you're hunting in a place like the pro's hunt with little to no pressure at all.

I dont doubt that at all, samiam1150​. As a kid growing up in the 80's and even into the 90's, from the age of 13 into my early 20's -I was able to take dozens without ever taking any scent precaution or even considering wind direction either. But, I was usually hunting fields, spooked countless deer, very rarely saw a buck and only once saw a 3 1/2 yr old buck. I've just had too many deer blow at me, that I know never saw or heard me, to not put some effort into trying to minimize my scent while in the woods. I dont buy the clothes, but I do wash my hunting clothes in scent killer detergent or hot water only. I also use dead down wind soap and shampoo, scent killer on my boots, and code blue or hunter specialties field wipes if I've broken a sweat getting to my stand. Those are very inexpensive measures to take and it helps. So, why not do it?

at 20 degrees, it is awesome, especially if there is a foot or 2 of snow on the ground and the wind is howling at 30 MPH from the north.

The key with carbon clothes is care and storage.

Most people who don't believe in scent control are gun hunters. I'm a bow hunter, and it's a religion. Here's my easy 1, 2 ,3 scent control. Step #1 - Wash clothes in hot water only. Modern washing machines do a great job. A little human is less startling to a deer than ode la' whatthehellisthat? Step #2 - Make your own cover scent by boiling local foliage in water, and pouring into a spray bottle. It's cheap, quick, and smells all natural. In fact much like crushed pine, rubbed all over. To a deer it smells like a freshly made bed. Step #3 - Clean out your mouth, and rinse with water. That's the #1 scent maker. And always keep the wind in your favor. 9 times out of 10 I hunt from the ground and regularly get deer within 10 yards if the wind is right.

+Slim Jim I'm a gun hunter but I will take your advice this year on my hunt.....I always avoided scents as I don't see the value in being gouged for a small bottle of stuff. I never thought about boiling local stuff for the scent....I can get behind a free solution. Even if it just gives me a small boost it's still a boost in my favor :)

@@Twisted86 The store bought scent control works, no doubt about it. I hunt from the ground 90% of the time. I have a healthy fear of heights, so I've got tons of experience from the ground. I'll go up a tree stand every now and then, but I'd much rather hunt from a blind, or my ghillie suit. I use the scent blocker mainly when washing my clothes, brushing my teeth, deodorant, body soap (make sure you get your back!) and shampoo. I also use the dryer sheets. I use the scent control shampoo, body wash, toothpaste and deodorant the ENTIRE DEER SEASON. I do not use anything regular until AFTER deer season. I take a shower with this stuff everytime I hunt. I wash my clothes in the detergent and use the dryer sheets, I do this just one time, until I kill a deer and end up sweating (from all the work that goes on when you kill a deer) only then, will I do it again. I keep all of my clothes outside, away from anything that may give off a scent, except for my base wear, a towel and washrag (which I've washed in scent control detergent and scent control dryer sheets) I keep that stuff in a plastic box, with pine needles. I get dressed on the porch and NEVER walk back into the house with my hunting clothes on. I've dressed/underdressed countless times in freezing temps. It sucks, but it WORKS. I hunt on my own land at my home, most of the time, so I dont get in a vehicle. If I do, I won't get dressed until I get out the truck where I am hunting and keep all of my clothes in the bed of the truck. I think gloves, boots and face mask are THE most important when it comes to actually using the scent control spray. Yes, I hit my outer wear just a little bit, but as long as you keep that shit outside after washing it with scent control and using the dryer sheets, you're fine. This keeps the cost down, because the actual spray is what's expensive. I've watched buddies totally drown their clothes in that shit using 2-3 bottles at 15 bucks a pop. That's TOTALLY unnecessary. I get very close to deer all of the time. Even been face to face on many occasions. It fools them. I believe it dilutes your scent, where the deer know you've been there, but they think it's been hours, or even days prior. I've watched them get suspicious looking at me and they'll come up to investigate with their nose. As long as I sit super still they'll usually sniff for a bit then go back to browsing, or whatever. Keeping your eyes squinted is very important when a deer is looking directly at you from the ground too. Your eyes will give you away in a nanosecond. I still play the wind, but also know, the effort I put into being as scent free as possible, pays huge dividends...... You have to take everything into account. People will use the body wash, or whatever and dry off with a towel that's been washed in Tide, well, now you smell like Tide. So the body wash didnt do shit. LOL!

Rifle hunter here and i did wash all my clothes in scent free detergent, and air dry everything outside. I then cut pine saplings and raked up some fallen oak tree leaves placed my cloths in a bin layered everything. Im in Minnesota so best to do this late october after the frost so no bugs. Seemed to Work last year but always accepting new ways to battle the bucks nose.

This is why I hunt from a climber exclusively, get up about 40 feet, no issues with scent. I also hunt the wind 100% of the time, and wash all my stuff in scent free detergent, and my body. I keep my camo stored outside in a weather proof locker I built.

But Granpa did kill many big bucks. 3an ahalf and older. But maybe deer like Old Spice and Folgers mix. Im gonna try that

a quick note. I've noticed year after year, in SoMd, we have a huge population of Amish. Now if you've ever encountered a gentleman of said religious sect, you'll know they don't hardly ever worry about personal scent, and the their hygiene isn't necessarily up to date with the rest of the nation. especially when it comes to hunting. this isn't to say they're dirt balls, but they invest in the more basic of provisions. now my point. every year for the length of my hunting span, (I'm 36 and started around kindergarten), every year there are hundreds of buggies filled deer going up and down to roads throughout whitetail season..... now if you can explain it, go right ahead. but even they can't explain why. and this even covers those who don't work the fields, and opt for other ways of making a living.

My grandfather killed over 150 deer in his life time he never used any scent controll. I hunt on the ground. And I've had deer walk as close a 5 yards from never knew I was there. My average shot is 30 yards and I bow hunt. Allot. It movement thqt they notice or somthing that looks out of place. As Fred bear once said. Being quiet and still is your best camouflage. Old fred, bear hunted with just a recurve. Bow but took all kinds of game,,,

Hey everybody! Use ordinary BAKING SODA. Wash your clothes in it. Bath with it. Sprinkle your hunting clothes with it and store in a garbage bag. Don't put your clothes on until ready to hunt. It's the best and cheapest scent control. It has always worked for me and trophy hunters use it. Don't waste your money on all the commercial products.

As do I, but I consider all recommended options: i.e., Bathing and washing clothes in baking soda, chewing on an onion, youtubes unlimited material on the subject. It may only dissipate my scent by a fraction in reality, but that fraction may allow a more ethical shot.

Dj White Of the twenty four deer that I've taken all but one was a one shot clean kill. Only one required a follow up shot. All were taken within fifty yards and a few were taken as close as ten yards. All but two were taken from ground stands.

uh... you point out all the reasons scent control is stupid right at the start. "but you use camo/blind and they can still see you sort of"... I had a buck nearly run into my blind last year. He had to run off trail, through really thick brush and he was downwind and I don't use any "scent control". It wasn't until I stuck my head out my blind to see why the squirrels where making so damned much noise that he noticed me. Never mind the cost would remove any point in hunting for meat. May as well buy a cow if I am going to spend a fortune on stupid crap that doesn't work.

Thing that best works for me is I leave my cigarettes at home and vape doe urine... 😂😉

Just spray some buck bomb. Had 2 does circle behind me from my 2 o'clock to my 7 o'clock 12 yards away.

TheMikerandazzo those guys that came up with that even now use the same thing I've switched to, the "Conquest Evercalm Herd"....it's expensive as hell, but my God, every evening I've been surrounded....$20 works wonders. I'll bet my paycheck.

If you take a shower with either some really fruity smelling or scent free soap and don't smell like a butthole or a foot the deer won't care either way. The whole "deer can smell you" thing came from a time when people didn't shower every day.

***** I certainly agree that how sensitive deer are to human scent is area dependent. In urban/suburban areas where hunting is not allowed, deer are often unconcerned with human scent. However, just because deer often smell humans does not mean they will be desensitized. In states like Michigan, with 650,000 deer hunters, where the southern counties I hunt in may have 10-20 deer hunters per square mile, deer not only are not desensitized, but indeed are hypersensitive to human scent, and on high alert, painfully aware that their main predator is out and about all over the countryside in locations they are not used to smelling them. Extreme scent control leads to a radically different experience in areas like this. And this kind of pressure is the norm in a number of different states.

See More Bucksmy name is David I have a question sir... will deer/ bucks tolerate me and my wife walking back (regardless of the wind direction) on our property to veiw our fruit trees and or other things we have planted to see how the planted things are progressing? Is that going to mess up my hunting? we walk around maybe once a week sometimes not for two weeks sometimes twice in one week. and when we do we are wearing "street chothes" and we do not mind the wind as we walk and look. we always see deer and lots of other animals and also jump deer frequently. we always stop and let the deer stop then move the other direction slowly respectfully as possible move away from the deer. and other animals. what are your thoughts? about the only thing I peruse on this land is deer in seasons available. so it's basicly a sanctuary for grouse bear squirrel woodcock bobwhite bobcat rabbit some hair coyote porcupine snakes you name it we move away and leave it alone. thank you in advance. please feel free to mail me back a reply d_stirm@yahoo.com thx!

The “Why is it...” part is laughable. The reason we don’t buy into scent control? It makes a $50 jacket turn into a $200 jacket. It’s not worth pouring all your money into.

Updated: 1-16-2023 * I was able to get scentlok top and bottom. Never got busted while wearing those clothes (4 years). I stopped wearing it for the last 3 hunts in 2022 and got busted every time. I'm going with Scentlok.. ** Play the wind - Absolutely!!!!!! I have used every product on the market so I'll tell you the worst product. Scentless Bar Soap by Scent Killer is that absolute worst. After using Scent Killer bar soap, I was busted by deer so many times and often only an hour or two after scrubbing from head to toe with it. The best results for me regarding scent is stop using soap for 2-3 days, no cologne, etc. Then the night before the hunt, hot shower for 20 minutes using nothing for soap whatsoever. That does it. I've killed a lot of deer since realizing this is the best method. Wash your clothes in baking soda a few times and then hang those clothes outside for 12-24 hours. That's it.

L. S. you can also shower/shampoo with ibaking soda, and brush teeth. neutralizes scent on the cheap.

I agree, but I have tried showering with baking soda and it seems to clumb up alot and very difficult to actually clean your body. If using a scrubby, I'm sure you can use it like an exfoliator. No problems with your suggestion if you can make it work. Hunt hard brother.
