There is an entire documentary in colour from Japanese service men who filmed using Kodak colour during the war.

@@Pkarchpray16 Its literally called "Japan's War in Colour (2004)" The only way to see it is going into the high seas or buying the DVD from Amazon.

Interesting footage. Nice shots of the crew running through their drills with the practice gun. The floatplane appears to be a Kawanishi E7K2. Officially called the "Navy Type 94 Reconnaisance Seaplane Model 2".

Was that a radar dome installed behind the the 3rd crewman? I checked the Wiki entry and it doesn't mention anything. EDIT: A little research shows it to be a Type 3 Mark 6 Model 4 (Type H6) surface search radar. There was also a notation in another entry about MAD gear, but no details.

@@Oligodendrocyte139 I couldn't find any greater detail on it; somebody might have misunderstood what it does/poor translation. I don't know much about MAD tech, but I can't see them carrying much more weight on a plane that size, so maybe it is wrong on that score.

@MM22966 So, they did develop the technology, called KMX, it doesn't look too bulky, and was fitted to floatplanes. The Aleutian campaign is probably too early though. Interesting 👍

One of those cases where you better win, because going into the water is right out.

I'm pretty sure that's IJN CL Tama at the start. She had a unique camo pattern...

I'm not very au fait with the minutia of Japanese naval vessels but comparing to references I would agree, although the cameraman seems to be on board a different class, possibly the Nagara-class cruiser Abukuma

On the "Bismarck" those "Ladeübungskanonen" practice breeches (one for 10.5 cm and one for 15 cm guns) were on the deck between two rear main turrets Casar and Dora, on the "Scharnhorst" they were in front of the funnel just inboard of the foremost 10.5 cm mounts, and there was one on the "Nurnberg" in front of starboard rear torpedo set. Didn't find them on "Hipper" or "Deutschland" classes though.

The tail (Aleutian Fleet) was too far away from the head (Midway Fleet) to help save the day. Big mistake by Yamamoto. One of many, actually

Ideen.. The whole alutian operation was a mess and did not contribute at all to midway.. Would have been much wiser to put the carrier in a parallel course with kidu butai in case there is a trap to fight back

@@Grandizer8989 yes... A few icy rocks where the japs would only suffer cold, snow and there was noway to go from there.. A grave strategic mistake.. Later they were easily surrounded and driven away..

About 50 percent of them survived the war. Mostly due to lack of fuel at the end. Most of the losses were in port or at anchor due to air stirkes.

A CL with single mount 14cm guns. Nagara? or one of her classmates?
