Scenes of chaos as Taiwan parliament brawl escalates into the night | Al Jazeera Newsfeed

There were chaotic scenes as lawmakers shoved, tackled and hit each other in a day-long brawl in Taiwan’s parliament on Friday over a controversial reform bill. One lawmaker was taken to the hospital after falling off a platform and injuring his head.

    I don't think chaos is the definition of democracy and if holding politicians accountable for what they say is wrong, I am not sure we live in a democracy. The litmust test for democracy is challenging the those who hold power and challenging their power in a democratic way and seeing there reaction!

  • @janew6574

    I would say that: in dictatorial countries, the guy with the biggest fists already won and is controlling peoples' lives by intimidation and authoritarian means. Everyone might look 'ordered', but that doesn't mean that they are happy, free or that human rights violations aren't being committed. The scenes, above, are not actually common in democracies. I think that one thing that democracies currently seem to have in common with autocratic forms of government, is the level of corruption amongst elites. I believe that the difference about corruption, in a democratic country, is that there is a much bigger chance of doing something to fix that. An outstanding model for governing a large country, in my opinion, is the US Constitution. (Apart from the fact that the ceremonial Head of State is also the political President. I think that those two positions are better occupied by different people). The US may be facing a difficult election, but I feel that it's Constitution gives it the means to come up with better solutions.

  • @DanielLai-zk7bz
    @DanielLai-zk7bz13 күн бұрын

    Don’t like the KMT either but over the last eight years, the Democratic DPP has committed numerous disgraceful acts, and they've tried everything to prevent the bill from being passed. Those who have closely followed recent party negotiations know that DPP legislators never seriously read the provisions but merely delayed proceedings with the aim of obstructing the bill's passage. They even proposed 80 different versions of the bill, with each version differing only in punctuation and a few words. Despite their majority in Congress, the DPP failed to deliver on the reforms promised over the past eight years. It's clear that there's no bill that can't be passed, only those that the DPP doesn't want to pass. Holding all the power, they have allowed Taiwan's wealth gap to reach 66 times while deceiving the international community with claims that only the DPP can protect Taiwan's sovereignty, resulting in severe hardship for the people of Taiwan.

    Without democracy, there's much less chance of removing corrupt or dictatorial leaders. Once a dictator is in power, in a country without elections, they're there (causing misery to the country's people) for life, or until they're overthrown. For all its superficial 'chaos', I fee that democracy gives the best chance for respecting human rights, thinking about choices, reviewing and changing those choices, if required. I would say that the overwhelming majority of people who live in democratic countries would never choose to live with any other form of government, unless travelling for business partnerships, academic positions, etc. In contrast, many people do emigrate, or wish to emigrate, to democratically governed countries, from less free countries. I think that this contrast shows that many people appreciate the better advocacy for human rights and the ability to think and have input into policy, that is possible in a democracy.

    The Taiwanese parliament is called “The Legislative Yuan” and is only one branch of the government. Right now the government is controlled by DPP, but they only have a minority government and so the opposition has more seats in the LY, they are able to form minority government because they have the presidency and control the “Executive Yuan” This law would be like if we gave Congress the power to declare the president is a liar and arrest him (whether he was one or not)

    Those legislators who are most violent today belong to the newly elect president's minority political faction (3-4 mainstream factions within DPP), so you can see it's just an act.

    you seem to know nothing on the topic, it is very common for Taiwanese lawmakers to resolve their issues with violence. For example, the current President of their Legislative Yuan who can be heard in this video shouting "discussion will continue 3:30pm" famously assaulted the ex-President of Taiwan some 25 years ago.
