(Scary Logo Video) Logo Madness, Episode 1: WGBH Boston

Ойын-сауық

Episode one of my new series Logo Madness. The show where we dive in and look at some of those scary and creepy logos from the past. We decided to start with the one that was my scariest nightmare as a child and one that I see a lot in scary logo lists and compilations. While they produce amazing content their logo is often off-putting for many first time viewers. I hope you all enjoy this series!

When I was a kid growing up in MA during the 80’s the (2nd variation) logo itself reminded me of an electric stovetop heating up and then add that unnerving synth swell; IT BURNNNNS!!! 😂 Yeah needless to say it use to scare the crap out of me ESPECIALLY when I’d fall asleep with the tv on and wake up to that horror! As an adult after watching various WGBH logo histories, remixes, and parodies to overcome my channel 2 phobia haha I can ultimately say it makes me feel very nostalgic for home and my childhood. Great vid, thanks man!

Hey man, if it wasn't for your channel, mine probably wouldn't have existed. You were the first scary logos youtube channel I saw! It's cool to see you still talking about it 10+ years later.

Thank You So Much! I am honored to hear that I inspired you. Keep going strong, and work hard! I am hoping to pick up again soon. For sure I’ll keep them coming, I am now focusing on breaking down the logos and picking out what makes some of these such Nightmare Fuel for many of us. Again Thank You for your kind words. You’re videos are awesome as well and can’t wait to see what’s coming for your channel.

Scariest logos from my childhood (hey modrenwarfare long time fan) 1. Gamecube Laughing Kid Startup- backstory behind this one, when i was little I was trying to get on & play very late at night with all the lights off and everyone was asleep. I unknowingly had my finger on a certain button on the controller when a very different version of the gamecube startup occurred with a demonic childs voice laughing at the end. Pure nightmare fuel for me to this day. No logo scared me like that one did. 2. 1980s Warner Bros Home Video Logo- another logo that I once saw late at light but this time I was much older. It still weirded me out for some reason. The sudden animation poping out at you plus the very loud 80s synth music playing throughout just never sat well with me. 3. Tie Between PS1 & PS2 Startup- Both startups seemed very loud & creepy to me. Seems like many others felt the same way as a kid 4. Original THX logo- I’m sorry but the eery silence while “silence, the audience is listening” is on screen gets me everytime to this day. Just unsettling overall 5. Paramount Feature Presentation Logo- Now for some reason this one always made me run away from the TV as a toddler before watching Blues Clues & Little Bear on VHS. From the logo slowly jumping towards you with everything onscreen going everywhere, and the deep male voice talking to you suddenly in the background

Hey, thanks for being a fan all these years! Thanks for sharing your experience with me. Game Cube one I can see why it would be creepy especially the laughing one. Never owned a Game Cube unfortunately but remember the startup very vividly. Warner Home Video never bothered me however I could see how the 80’s variant could be seen as scary, loud music and graphic in the sky. PS1 for sure was a nightmare and is one I plan on covering in this series in the future. PS2’s Red Screen of Death was extremely creepy. THX is another one I will cover in this series as well as the Paramount Feature Presentation as that was creepy for me too. Thanks again for being here all this time. Things will be slightly changing here but the logo videos aren’t going anywhere.

@@modrenwarefare to my remembrance the red screen of death never bothered me as a child I actually liked the sound it made. What creeped me out the most on PS2 was the floating blue orb and the background sounds on the menu screen

Personally, this version freaked myself out the most. kzread.info/dash/bejne/omShzsaKftq1p6g.html It slams you in the face as soon as it starts with that yellow flash. Then the light tubes keep coming at you like wasps when you disturb their nest. Then the logo powers up and blasts noise at you. Not only that, but the final piece of the music seems to sound more shrill than normal; almost like how audio you hear in real life reappears in your nightmares in a more distorted manner. The end part with the "2" is more calm, but even then it gives off this uncanny feeling like something's going to jump out at you at any moment. In the first version shown, the music isn't that distorted and loud, it was just the capture. Just another example of how distorted audio can make things more eerie than they actually are. Not much to say about the logo, it's just an obvious product of it's time. The second version was what freaked myself out as a child. The logo looks like something aliens would send when they're about to attack. It just looks hostile and threatening. As a kid, I only ever saw the redone version of this where the animation is sped up and it doesn't morph into "Boston Presents" at the end; so seeing it etch out so slowly was very immobilizing to my young self. When the logo begins to transition with the light constantly expanding, it also feels like something is going to jump out at you. I can't describe it, but it's the same feeling I get when the Emergency Alert System comes on and my cable is transitioning: is this the end, or is it just a test? While I'm not really scared by this logo anymore (it's actually my favorite logo), the third version sends shivers down my spine. While I am grateful that it doesn't slowly draw out this time, the time for anticipation is removed and it slams you in the face. The first half is the most unnerving because you once again have the alien-looking object against a pitch black environment. The music also sounds more dated and stingy in this version as well. The second half is calming in my opinion. They put in the afterglow which removes the blank environment and the end of the music isn't as loud. The part I don't like is how it jumps out of nowhere and disappears as fast is it surfaced. The versions with the voiceovers remove the creepiness in my opinion. The worst one was the variation of the third version that sometimes appeared at the end of older episodes of Arthur. The CiNAR logo would fade into it and it would remain stationary for half a second. There's just something threatening about the pre-glow portion of the logo that I really can't describe. On some shows the logo wouldn't appear until after the funding credits, so you would always be guessing where it would show up. That anticipation also made this one fairly bad as well. Nonetheless, I would rather have the 1977 and 1993 versions back than the horrible "GBH" rebrand they use now. Worst decision since Nickelodeon got rid of the splat. Welcome back!

Wow I never saw that version of WGBH before. I agree that was very creepy! Yeah I agree distortion and loudness does add eeriness. I also would have to agree with having the 77 or 93 version. I also am upset about them changing to GBH. Thanks for your comment!

I moved out of MA in 1998 so I wasn’t familiar with the version from your link! Read my comment on this vid it totally reminds me of an electric stovetop heating up even more than the second variation!! AAAHHH! Although the WGBH logo is kinda unsettling, it is also my fav logo of all time as well. 😊

I don't know why, but it was never the loudness or the animation that scared me the most about this logo, it was always the weird sounding synthesizer. It sounded kind of out of tune and distorted. It's interesting seeing how everyone is scared of this logo for different reasons, it's almost like it's a piece of art.

I’m scared of the Snee Oosh inc. logo. Due to some episode airings of Hey Arnold having music. The music is eerie and creepy. It contains a eerie choir and has a flute playing in the background.
