    I just bought an iMac M3 for my use at home. The iMac in my office at work is 12 years old and it served me well until I recently retired. I ordered it was 24GB RAM and 1TB SSD. It’s screaming fast!

    I've been using iMacs since 2005. My last 2 machines have lasted me 7 years with my latest being a a 2021 M1 iMac. I don't see that 7 year upgrade cycle changing for me as the M1 is more than capable for my needs and probably will be for a long time!

    Reviewers: "M3 is for normal people, office, social media, watching media..." Me and many people with M1: "Software development, video editing...". This M3 is faster than many recent high-end computers in recent years, computers that people were using to do all sort of heavy lifting stuff.

    100% happens with cameras too, these so called "reviewers" finding faults with everything expecting everything to be top of the line. I photograph high end weddings, use film cameras from 1995, digital cameras from 2007 and edit on a 8GB 2015 iMac. I placed my order for the M3 24GB though. Looking forward to it.

    Final Cut works fine on the iMac. I have done over 100 videos for KZread on my M1 iMac. Your statements about using Final Cut Pro are demonstrably wrong. You should have tested it before posting false information. Yes my M1 iMac has 8GB of ram because they did not have a 16GB available. It surprised me that it was no problem. I would recommend getting the 512 GB hard drive because the 256GB is slower.

    I bought a clever adapter on Amazon that elevates the Magic Mouse by about 15mm making it easier to hold and use. It also incorporates a MagSafe-compatible wireless charging coil which mates to the bottom of the mouse via a Lightning plug on the upper surface of the adapter. Placing the mouse on top of a charging pad or puck does three things: illuminates a white LED on the end of the adapter, disconnects the Bluetooth and commences wireless charging.

    There are so many professional tasks that can be perform using this computer. If you are a writer, you don't need a crazy computer to do your job. I see lots of KZreadrs thinking that they need a pro computer to edit 4k videos. I draw digitally and this one should be more than sufficient, if you consider I use a 2013 iMac and is still powerful enough. I guess it depends on what to do. Excellent review, mate, keep it up!

    Matt...GREAT video...thank you so much. I'm currently using an early 2019 iMac 27-inch Intel machine with a molasses-slow 1 TB "Fusion Drive" (ughhh). I added some memory myself when I bought it, and it's served well as a family desktop machine. I decided to upgrade to this iMac M3 24" in the top spec, and upgraded to 16 GB of memory and the 1 TB SSD in an attempt to future-proof a bit. I think your assessment is spot-on regarding the new iMac M3. It's not meant for power-users, however is quite suitable for about 90% of those that want a highly capable family desktop machine. And for those awaiting the release of a 27-inch iMac with Apple silicon...I think Apple has made it pretty clear over the last week that it's NOT forthcoming.

    Informative and comprehensive. Like a number of commenters I was on a 27” 2017 with the i7 chip. I recently sold it for more than Apple was offering as a trade. I was waiting for this new iMac but I’m underwhelmed. Fully spec’d it would be uber-expensive. Thing is the 4.5K screen (even though smaller than the 27) is attractive for photo editing. Going with the M2 Mini requires buying that expensive Studio Monitor that pushes the cost of entry way up. A conundrum.

  • @MattTalkTech

    @MattTalkTech

    Indeed! Getting a M2 mini and a Studio Monitor is more. But you would get a 27 inch screen and 5K display. If it was me wanting a great screen and M2 Mac desktop, I would get this iMac instead but with the 4x USB-C Ports

    When comparing All in one computers and you see that Dell is way cheaper like in the example in this video you also notice that Dell go for a 2K display while Apple is going for 4,5K. This is a classic Apple thing. Already when the first Mac came out in early 1984, that Mac 128k had a "hi res" display but it was a non-color display. I think it was not a black & white display, it was a grayscale monitor? This had to to with GUI and WYSIWG. So when writing a document and using the font that you want you should get that result also from the printer. At that time (early/mid 80s) you could use a color display, yes. But color displays had not that good enough resolution (pixel density). And there's a good reason why Apple wanna use "Retina" diplays. These cost more but it's worth it. Some customers might not agree and feel that 2K 24" is good enough. But Retina is the future and the price will come down by the years: more affordable. So it's these kind of factors why iMac cost more than similar PCs. It's also interesting to look at the history of iMac and the display panels being used, for the only or cheapest/smallest model: 1998-2002 15" CRT, G3 2002-2004 15" flat panel (the globe iMac), G4 2004-> 17" G5, later Intel Later -> 20" Later -> 21,5" Later-2021 21,5" Retina (?) 2021-today 24" Something like this. Maybe some year or so is not 100% correct: For the cheapest "1299 US dollar" model. You get the idea. It's a strategy from Apple that they use. Always improve. And at the same time being a company that wanna make profit. It's so obvious that the iMac development team always got the instruction that the cheapest model must cost 1299. So that's probably why the cheapst model is missing Touch ID and 2 extra USB-C ports for example. The display is VERY important for Apple's products. That's a conclusion. Macs began the transition to Retina in mid-2012 (WWDC 2012) with MacBook Pro 15, then MBP13 late 2012. Still selling non-Retina MBP. Later on, model by model got Retina. For iMac they started in late 2014 I think with 27" 5K (still selling 2,5K). As as it was possible to sell the 5K model at the lower price point they "killed" 27" 2,5K. They had the same strategy for 21,5" when moving from 2K to 4K. Look at Apple Vision Pro. Compare that to the competition. Apple got a super resolution! So what I believe is that Apple want all normal customers to not even think about things such as pixels. We don't wanna see pixels! And how to solve that? So many and so small pixels that we cannot see them. When looking at these classic photos from old cameras, you cannot see pixels. It's so good resolution. It's insane. It's that kind of experience that Apple want us to have with our Macs. So why did Apple not use Retina for Macs before 2012? Probably because it was too expensive. Apple couldn't fit it into the budget ("cost of parts"). Apple waited and hoped for THAT price reduction. Apple was also very early with Retina for smarphones with iPhone 4 in 2010. Sony Ericsson and Nokia had a few models 2010 and earlier with "Retina" or close to but those were not the high volume models. Apple did this with their high volume model very early. Going from 163 to 326 ppi. Samsung and some other launched phoned with 400-something ppi later on but Apple still used 326, some people complained that iPhone got a "bad ppi" but average people could probably never see the differnce. Now iPhone (non-SE) got that 400-something but that's probably because of the display makers that moved to higher ppi. This was a long story about displays and resolution/ppi. Apple will not "move back in time" with worse displays to sell a cheaper "all in one desktop Mac". Never gonna happen. And Apple never wanna compete with lower and lower price and have the goal to sell the cheapest products. Apple wanna sell the BEST products. And "the best products" is the most important thing in the balance between how good a product is and how much it cost - and at the same time sell millions of these every year and they don't wanna change the price to customer every week/month. We don't know exactly how many per year and IDC/Gartner can only speculate/estimate on that. What many people probably forget is that the first iMac in 1998 also costed 1299 dollar. Same as the starting price now in 2023-2024! Is a 1299 dollar product cheaper (for a customer) now than In 1998? Good question. Probably both yes and no, depends on how you count.

Of course I have 24gb ram, I think the M3 with 24gb ram is capable of doing this too. Why would the M3 (24gb ram) struggle with that? Could somebody explain? I was looking to finally upgrade but this video now made me unsure what to do. Any suggestions?

    I ordered the 24GB Ram M3 to replace my 2015 8GB iMac. The problem with ALL these "reviewers," is that they're "reviewing' the base 8GB model. NO ONE has the 16 let alone the 24GB model yet. On top of many of these "reviewers" always finding faults with everything. Happens in the camera side of things too. I'm a pro photographer and my base model 2015 iMac as well as my old 2006 iMac many years ago got the job done. So I'm sure the M3 will be able to as well.

    @@user-sm9of7th1j Got the same setup and I'm very happy with my purchase. Blazing fast start up, app launch and especially fast photo editing. I haven't edited a full wedding yet, but the few photos I threw into Lightroom to test out was lighting fast compared to my 2015 iMac. Even Photoshop opens fast and saves quickly. I don't do video, but when I do, it's going to be from a 2012 camera so I can't say how it will do with 4k video. From what I've seen, it uses around 15-20GB of RAM with Photoshop, Lightroom and Safari on KZread open and it manages to get the job done quickly. I say get it and don't listen to the reviews who are only testing the 8GB base models. NOW! The only fault I found with this iMac however, is that my one hard drive and card reader which I used a mini USB 3 to USB C did not work. No big deal. I was thinking of replacing them anyway. I haven't found anything online about a possible solution though. So long as you have USB-C peripherals, you'll be fine.

    Hmm, for Windows that works really well. But for Mac's RAM is allocated very differently. For example right now on my Mac Studio with 64GB of RAM, I am using 50GB but only have Chrome with 3 tabs open, WhatApp, with hardly any services running in the background and thats it.... Those two apps wouldnt use that much RAM, its just MacOS has allocated this amount to the Apps right now and as more apps open, this would get thinner.

The new iMac starts at $1299. You're getting a bigger and higher quality display, much better performance, better IO, far superior speakers, 1080p webcam, etc. Plus, if you take inflation into account the Apple Silicon iMacs are actually quite a bit cheaper.

Ok the new range of laptops are quicker . But they should've left out the this iMac . No wonder their sale are going downhill they deserve what's coming to them ...... My feedback has no reflection on this KZread video and I appreciate the effort but has gone into this ...
