That is a great observation, Piero. I believe some musicians perceive greeting applause at the beginning of a concert as a distraction and would like to shorten this moment. I think Sviatoslav Richter was one of these musicians as well. He used to rush to the scene and would quickly sit behind the piano with his hands start playing immediately after that. Interestingly, he also didn't tolerate anybody standing in the concert hall, a practice, which used to be very common in his days, especially when the crowds of concert-goers were enormous.

How can anything be more exciting than Scarlatti? Brams? I don't think so! Did we need all that personal stuff about the muscisian?

@@harrybendelow3537 What a silly remark. Maybe not "needed" but illuminating. The music comes from the person, the body, mind and psyche. It doesn't exist in an impersonal vacuum.

I have listened lots of famous piano recitals, but this strikes me as a particularly rare one. The atmosphere is very charged, the tempi moderate, great attention for every detail, absolutely stunning.

The concert took place on September 25, 1984 in the Church of San Franceso in Locarno and was recorded by the Radio of Italian Switzerland. In my CD edition, Gilels plays Debussy's suite "Pour le piano" between Scarlatti and Schumann.

Emil Gilels is supherb as usual. This was recording was near the end of his life as I have understood it from different posts on KZread, but of course he did not know it at that time when he played this.

I am very judicious in subscribing to accounts, but when I saw the selection offered by Classical Music/ /Reference Recording, I couldn't help myself but join 31+K subscribers. Excellent selection and a fantastic forum for music connoisseurs who can share some interesting personal view or information (to be completely honest, I am a bit tired of uniformative posts). The notes about Gilels’ change of program reminded me of a recital I heard many years ago in Santa Fe of Christopher O’Riley. The original program was verging on the outrageous: Liszt Wagner transcriptions, 30 minute long Reich minimalist opus, Godowsky ... The original program was a who’s who of transcendent virtuosic works. But O’Riley had something else in mind. He completely changed the program right then and there and announced the pieces of the new program: Mozart, Schumann, Beethoven...What a wonderful recital! Instead of being blown away by sheer virtuosity, we were instead treated to an exquisitely beautiful and highly introspective performance.

Even geniuses are allowed to make occasional mistakes! They don’t make performances less precious! Only mechanical pianos don’t make any mistakes. We all have seen music students with music sheets in their laps, judging performances of masters in concert halls! They always looked stupid.
