Scams In Bangkok Thailand (Watch out for This!!)

I tell a story of how I nearly got scammed in Bangkok this week. Scams are everywhere and Bangkok is no different. Desperate times call for desperate measures I guess. I tell this story at Benjakitti Park where it all went down. If you're in the Sukhumvit area watch out for these scams.

My 2nd year living in BKK I had just bought a couple items at Central ( jeans and shirts) . As I was waiting at a busy 7-Eleven, the young Thai guy in his 20’s in front of me dropped some “credit cards” out of his wallet-I naturally stooped down to pick the cards up for him. Little did I realize his “friend” on my left grabbed my expensive jeans & shirt out of my shopping bag until I returned to my apartment. That was one smooth scam. After that I became paranoid of anyone standing close to me in a store.

I was warning people of a scam at my local shopping area. There were these two attractive girls in bikinis offering a car wash for $5. While one distracted you when washing the windscreen, the other was vacuuming inside of the car and stole my wallet. I’ve had 3 wallets stolen this week. Be careful everybody ! Stay safe

1st thing, don't carry a wallet in any country, keep your cash in a flat money holster that fits underneath the shirt. It can't be removed easily and if you are walking nobody will see it. Wallets are bulky and can be picked from your pocket easily so remember to not carry it and always keep some quick cash in a non visible spot when shopping, there are always people studying where you reach to get money so don't alert them of where you keep your main stash.

It’s not so much the person who confronts you in the street, but taxi scams that I’m concerned about. I found BKK and Hanoi to be the worst in Asia. Numerous times I’ve had taxi drivers just drive past my hotel, the meter runs at triple speed, you name it, its happened. Very worrying at times

This is great stuff man, scammers don't stand still and the usual scam-avoidance advice for Bangkok isn't necessarily relevant anymore. It's a horrible feeling when you do get caught out in violent circumstances, I had similar to what you describe happen in Ireland off O'Connell street a good few years ago. Held up at needle point without a second to think. Thankfully I literally only had 5 yoyos in the wallet but it plays on your mind after in terms of what potentially you could have done. As you say the 6th sense does become fine-tuned over time.

This was not really a scam tbf but more like an attempted robbery. Most likely they were trying to create a situation where one of the guys needs to use your phone to find their airpods or something and then the guy on the bike is off as soon as he gets his hands on it. Quite brazen tbh though and not really common for Bangkok or Thailand in general

I have learned from living overseas for many years (mostly Asia) is that you just ignore people. For the most part. It’s sad to do that but true. Especially when they call out for you. Just keep walking. Or running. Don’t stop. It works for me. So many out there make a living ripping people off. Or scamming them. Less is more with dealing with people. It’s true. It’s more peaceful that way. For yourself.

If some stranger who I've never met before and will never see again thinks I'm rude why do I care? It's a shame it's come to that and I don't necessarily ignore everyone who approaches me but just gotta do what you gotta do to survive wherever you are.

I think you can read most people. If someone is genuine then you know. I always try to be visible and try not to get into a position where someone can take advantage but not to say it can't happen. Who would of thought in the middle of the day people trying to steal your phone.

The first thing you did wrong was to even care what he was saying, if you are by yourself anywhere you must keep moving and NEVER stop to help anyone and if you do want to help then go somewhere safe and call the police and give the location of where you saw the person. If it is a real situation then they will be laying there when the cops and paramedic arrive and you did your duty, don't try to be a hero just because somebody lost their wallet or earbuds etc.., it's usually a trap and they know you're alone.

Hey mate Bangkok can be sketchy, look I,ve subscribe to you only because you seem genuine and l like most Irish people I,ve met while living in Thailand and Vietnam, over many years. 1 thing I,m surprised about did you say you,ve lived in Bangkok, for 10 years. If so you must of learned a bit of Thai lingo, come on please fella that would be a little ignorant. Look I don't know your business or how you,ve stayed so long there, that's up to you. All I can say is be careful, keep your wits about yourself. You must have a Thai lady or partner to have been so long in the country. And if so you should have picked up on the fact Thai people are honest and pretty friendly, sure you get the odd bad 1 but that's the same anywhere. What I will say is as they say in Thai sabai sabai and never trust a farang you haven't connected with or know personally. And even then don't get to involved with them, because in the end most travelers that aren't established or recognized probably are the biggest scammers out. Especially in the last year or so, because half of them are probably stuck there with little money. Look I could tell you 20 to 30 stories about Thailand, and other farang. I,ve been lucky not to have had to big of a problem, only because I,ve got Thai friends that I,ve met in Australia, and I,ve helped them in my country. And also the fact I,ve been going there so many years. You just have to keep your wits about yourself. Quick story or 2, 20 years ago I had a girlfriend in Phuket. My English mate owned a guesthouse in Patong me and her use to stay there when I was on a break from my work in Vietnam, 1 time we were in the room and I heard a bit of banging and noise up the other end of the apartments. Didn't think much of it but the next day I talked to my mate. He told me there was 1 guest who was staying there from Algiers.what he was doing when everyone was out trying to break safes of the walls. They obviously caught him and I think my mate said he ended up in lock up for 3, or 4 years. That's keen but fkn crazy, also another 2 guys also from that country, when I was in Samui about 4 years ago with my Nephew, they tried to hitch a ride with me and him and a couple of ladies to another beach in a taxi jeep, the shit these blokes were telling us they had been doing while traveling, and what they were trying to live on was very shafty so I told them to take hike, like I said be weary fella. There many other thing I've seen from farang that's not good to be around. Don't get me wrong nothing to dangerous but just seriously stupid for farang to be involved with.Thats why I avoid most farang while I,m there. Anyway goodluck fella take care if you want to hear some more genuine stuff up to you mate reply seeya
