Facts
I live in Bangkok, but as an obvious foreigner with limited knowledge of Thai I NEVER take a tuk-tuk or a taxi unless I am with a Thai person. It’s BTS and MRT metros everywhere all the time on their extensive networks faster then going in traffic and cheaper with no potential scams.
@blackbirdbeatle

Why not a river taxi or Grab or something?
@Hector5257
Ай бұрын
@@blackbirdbeatle River and canal taxis have limited routes and hours of work and are only interesting if you live near a canal which has them, but fun to take. Grab can be an alternative in a crunch, but then you have to go trough the heavy Bangkok traffic, and some drivers will not honor your call or will try to get extra money out of you, while the metro avoids all traffic issues, has a large network, and is still cheaper.

The red non-AC buses are usually only 8 baht. Travel like a local and speak Thai you save a ton of money on transport. I usually only use local buses very seldom bts, some bts routes are cheap such as from Mochit to Yaek Kor Por Aor near Rangsit. Local air conditioned orange buses are also cheaper than the more modern blue AC buses. All buses are much cheaper than motorbikes, taxi or tuktuks. Bangkok has many options to save money on transport.

why not learn thai. its very easy language to do so at least the basics. go try learning khmer and burmese gets alot harder. but thai extremely easy as also the thais will just speak thai with you where as it was much harder for me to learn khmer and burmese as i did. then you got the minority language like karen and tai yai mon not easy. lao language once you know thai extremelly easy too.

The stores give them free gas if they bring people in. Ive talked to someone before who said they only have to show you the stores. The suit guy lied about you having to buy something. Also bro, please be careful, I don't want any of these places to come after you or something.
after a couple of experiences with the Tuk Tuk's i refuse to use them at all !! scammers !!

Been going on holiday to Thailand since 2007 but prior to that had been on business a few times. I have never been in a tuk tuk or on a motorcycle taxi. Any random approaches me trying to strike up a conversation I use the ignore and walk off approach.
Great video Adam! Really enjoyed this! Thank you!
The oldest Tuk-Tuk tricks! When I first visited Bangkok in 1991, I hired a Tuk-Tuk for half day just to see temples. After every temple, he would stop at a clothing store, jewelry store and say just looking looking and they give me free petrol. BS.

Plenty of posts on thailand reddit pages from first timers, gets one of these taxis, go to suit store, buy some "top shelf Kashmir wool or silk suit", pay like $600, get back to australia and they find out its some polliester crap, didn't get to do most of the tours that they wanted, just the ones the driver gets a kick back on, usually they feel like they are trapped and had a horrible 8 hour day, the drivers can sense weakness and will push harder, so a 20 year old bloke with his misses on his first trip gets taken advantage of ....

Yeah, it’s a weird thing, sometimes they are sweet, and other times it’s a nightmare..
Nice to see honest locals explaining.
Staying near National Stadium BTS last year, i was constantly bothered by one tuk-tuk scammer in particular. A few heated interactions eventually led a few Leo's where he explained how these scams operate. He explained that he didn't like his job but wasn't able to quit because his bosses were "mafia" and they could ruin his life. One day I visited one of the shops he was pushing and ACTUALLY got a good deal on an ornamental box.
This should be compulsory viewing for all first timers. Love the ima first time tourist suit😂

The old school scam! happened to me on my first trip in 2002. After an argument and no suits or jewelry bought, the driver ditch us near Yaowarat. That was before google maps. We had to figure out where we were and how to come back to good ole Khaosan road :) 555
I've been to Thailand 10x. I remember one trip where I got a taxi at the hotel I was at. Knowing about the "suit" or "jewel" scam shops, I got in and tapped my watch, hey, I'm in a hurry, no time for shop. Well, this pissed off the taxi driver. I noted that we lapped the victory monument twice. When he stopped at the light I threw him 20 baht and jumped out. The last thing you want to do is to be stranded at some scammer shop being pressured to buy stuff you don't want!
Quite often I was approached. "Where you from?" NZ Auckland "My sister goes to university in Auckland" I knew it was a scam, but never got to the bottom of it. Some people said it was to do with card games.
Great video! Useful for firsttimers. Love Your work.

The only time I got scammed was taking a unmarked taxi to a seafood restaurant. The menu had no prices and it's now safe to say I will never look at a priceless menu ever again 😂

This was a good one. Undercover documentary. I liked it well done
That would drive me INSANE its like your time isn't valuable at all, id have him wait and then come out and get into another ride
I've seen all the videos discussing this subject, but I've never seen how they actually play out. Thanks Mate. 😊
Hahahaha! It was worth watching the vid just to see you in that ridiculous getup 😂😂😂 But in all seriousness, great subject and a great approach to putting yourself in a situation where it can’t not happen to you by giving them enough rope and watching the result. Bravo 👌🏼
Travel with Chris did this on his channel. The driver wants you to go in the store because he'll get a fuel coupon. From my understanding he'll still get a coupon even if you don't buy. Great video though mate, fellow Aussie here too

555555 🤣 love the elephant pants man!. I guess we all had to learn one way or the other, but this should be useful for first time tourists. The real downside of these scams for newbies is once you know you've been scammed, you think everyone is scamming you and start accusing honest Thais of doing so and that's when things can get interesting.
My friend and I were subject to the suit and jewelery store scam when we went to visit the Grand Palace. Thanks for making this video and exposing this very common and off-putting problem.

Yeah that’s the worst imo, 80 Baht is 80 Baht … not 100 Baht … water ? Use the jug you have in your tuk tuk it’s not his first rodeo, he stops and fills it up at s vending machine for 3-5 baht 😂 That’s theft … and technically could of used the Tourist police app on your iPhone… they locate you then dispatch the cops to your location … which is rarely a better idea but they do exist
Great video exposing this nonsense .. Everyone should watch this if they are going to Thailand . I am fluent in Thai so nonsense doest happen .

You should make this an ongoing series on your channel. This was very informative and entertaining at the same time.

That 80/100b Tuk Tuk was cheap as hell even though he did take you to a suit shop. I expected him to bump up the price when you finished but he only asked for 20b for water. I don't think you got scammed at all today there are way bigger scams than this. You just got lucky today and I give props to everyone who helped you, including the TukTuk driver.
Where was your hat with corks? Give em the full Croc Dundee!! 😁
I’ve traveled the world and thought I was an experienced traveler but I got scammed In Bangkok. (1994). I fell for the tuck tuck scam. I wanted to go to the palace so I flagged a tuk tuk. He told me the plalace was closed for a special holiday and he could take me to another temple. While there a gentleman approached me and started chatting. Eventually he started telling me about a jewelry sale that was being offered by the government to sell jewelry to foreigners at a discount. He wrote the name of the jewelry store on a piece of paper which I gave to the tuk tuk driver. We arrived there and it was busy but reflecting on it I believe they were actors in on the scam. I left and I asked the driver to take me back to the hotel. He asked me if he could take me to a tailor shop so he could get a gas voucher. So I said okay and suffered the high pressure sales pitch. Anyway that’s my story. They were so slick and professional.
Brings back memories of some scams I’ve encountered as well. I made the mistake of going in a store to look at watches. They bring me to a very tiny room and begin to show me a lot of inventory. I wasn’t interested and I just wanted to leave as it was hot and uncomfortable but they wouldn’t let me leave and were furious when I made it clear I wasn’t going to buy anything.
So Good Man thanks
Great content! I hate having these experiences when I travel, but it’s to be expected I guess.
Amazing how a change of clothes create such a difference on the approach of some of the locals in Thailand! I know this happened to me in Puerto Vallarta Mexico, as I got shook down by the police and they took all my vacation money so they wouldn’t take my 15-year-old to jail!
Excellent work Adam. Hopefully you’ll Help a few first timers with this.
My first time in Bkk back in 2022 I took a tuktuk ride for 1hr and got charged 400 bahts siteseeing. For me I thought that was not bad compared to the UK in a taxi for I hr it would cost 1500 bahts. But 2 days later, a tuk tuk drive approached me and said I take you sightseeing and temple and a suit shop for 1 hr 50 bahts.I took that ride and I did visit a suit shop and they tried they best but I stood my ground and told them I'm coming back with 5 work friends in a few weeks time,I got the card stamped and I was out of the shop and back into the tuk tuk finishing of the journey where I started from. But now I live here no way I'll get scammed from this guys or taxis without a meter.
Bro you didn't need to change , you started the video dressed waaaaayyy more like a tourist
Excellent video! Right on point! 👍
Great video love your content
Back in the late 1980's, I backpacked alone in SE Asia. Your video brought back memories of my BAD experiences in BGK. The methods recorded were similar to what I remember. Unfortunately, Thailand is not alone; other countries noted with bitter memories are Spain, Morocco, Indonesia, Egypt, India come to mind. The key is not to take any of this personally, you are a target and you can do very little to blend in. Today, I have visited 40+ countries, and all of my negative experiences all add to my list of "war stories." KEEP traveling!
As I am Thai And most Thai people don't ride these cars because they don't have meters. There is no standard for billing. These cars are about to disappear because Thai people don't ride them. But these cars like to make a living with foreigners because they think they have a lot of money and like to ride in these cars. I recommend and tourists must teach these cars a lesson without having to service them. Turn to using a car service that has a meter that correctly increases the price. Or it would be better to call Grab.
Good video, i am fascinated by how relentless you photographed everything
Exact same scam happened to me in bangkok a couple months ago really nice old guy approached me out of now where we talked about whatever for about 10 minutes then he said today the taxis and tuk tuks get free gas from the government so its only 80 baht for a trip around the city he even spiced it up by saying there was a free muai thai show later in the day wrote a bunch of thai words on a paper and a tuk tuk stopped beside us ended up going to a suit store for 2 minutes didnt buy anything and there was no muai thai but at the end of the day i saw 4 different temples for 80 baht so its really not a bad scam honestly its well worth the money tuk tuk guy was so nice i even bought him lunch
Oh Adam, Great Video! It is early in the morning here and that elephant outlet is hurting my eyes and my stomach! Have a great day!
My visit to Bangkok for a month in November of 2022 was quite different as I avoided using Tuk-Tuk and generally the large tourist hot spots that people visit. My journey comprised of me using the MRT/BTS as well as some motorbike with a local Thai but I never felt pressured to buy anything while I was there. When I visited Saigon I definitely had more locals asking me where I was from, where I was going so on. All I can suggest is be direct in your answers of saying no, avoid using the tourist transport methods like Tuk-Tuk and if possible spend time with a trustworthy local who can help you avoid scams.
Yes. And it's not just the tuk tuk drivers. The cumulative effect on the visitors is very stressful and frustrating. There are so many psychopaths. Thank you so much for making this video.

Bolt and Grab applications will resolve the transportation scam issue with fixed price and various options
It's a full time job for them, they did me and my gf years ago taking us to a very "peng" restaurant but I just ordered 2 drinks and left. Could be worse, in Australia there's peoples losing thousands to online scams and banks and government doing nothing to protect! good vid
Thailand could easily solve the Tuk Tuk scams. I am sure most have a license and license plate, just attach a QR to it and give tourist a heads up to use the QR to complain about anything shady.
That is sad, but it is pretty common to get scammed in certain Asian countries like Thailand and Vietnam. At least Korea and Japan aren't like that. You can judge a country's honesty by seeing if they have a 24/8 self serve convenience store with NO CLERKS inside them. Stores like that wouldn't even exist in the US. Only a very few countries can rely on the honesty of its citizens.

Exactly why I don't ever use tuk tuk's. Too hard, can't be bothered with the price bartering.
Exactly the same tuk-tuk trick as in 1990, from shop till shop.
This is a great experiment. I never talk to any of these clowns anywhere in Thailand. Maybe if you ever move on from there you can repost the video and show their faces. They would hate that and it could really help someone down the road.
another scam are the guys in sukumwit dressed in chinese new year dancer costumes that literally walk in front of you aggressively cutting you off then shove a gold donation dish into your face. if they perform some type of show you didn't see but expect money. the BMA bangkok metropolitan authority give licenses to bnafide street performers BUT they perform and have a tip box and don't walk around aggressively demanding money. politeness is a pillar of thai society but these guys shame that pillar.
