Native to the tropics of South Asia, the Scaly Breasted munia is a common sparrow-sized estrildid finch species. It has been introduced into many other parts of the world, and feral populations have formed across America and Australia. Unfortunately, the species is commonly used in the pet trade and is noted as a nutmeg mannikin or spice finch.
This munia often form flocks of as many as 100 birds. I have personally been fortunate to witness the nesting of these munias across my neighbourhood and home over the years.
