SCA Gulf Wars XXII 2013 Camp Life and Battles

Ойын-сауық

This is raw video from the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) event Gulf Wars XXII, 2013 which is held annually in Lumberton, Mississippi. Please note that some of the video contains audio and some doesn't. Later, I'll edit it down a bit and add music. Like stated, it's just raw video but it does give a good representation of life in camp during the event leading up to the war. Everyone (including myself) had a great time. I went there to simply cover/video a news story for WDAM TV and now find myself as member (it was that good). I hope this upload does the event justice. Please note that in parts of the video, there are some good interviews with some of the participants describing part of the science and arts which are part of the event as well. Very informative. The battle scenes are towards the end of the video but taken as a whole, it's a good representation of a small slice of what takes place at Gulf Wars.I'd like to thank the SCA, Gleann Abhann and everyone we met for being so kind and allowing us to visit. Also thanks to Mercer Morrison and David McRaney for keeping me from harm. Cheers!

This is "Gulf Wars" held in Lumberton, Mississippi during Spring Break every year (March). I believe you have to be 18 to fight in armored combat but there are other events that you can participate in such as archery, ax throwing, etc. It's all for honor and fellowship. I don't believe you have to be a member but it helps. These events are part of The Society for Creative Anachronism. KZread won't let me put links but do a Google search for the SCA and Gulf Wars. Thanks for watching my video.

It's so frustrating trying to explain the SCA to people who can only imagine that it's like the goofiness of LARP or Dungeon's & Dragons. Thanks for putting this out there for others to see, even if it's primarily just going to be viewed by those of us who are already a part of it.

We just held a huge Tourney in France, we have members all around the world with 19 Kingdoms and counting. It might see funny that a person from some southern state in the US, shares the same passion for history that someone in Japan or Spain would have but Drachenwald is in the the Kingdom of Europe, and well they to have the dream!

This is fantastic! but a friendly tip I hope you wont take wrong: DECORATE your clothing! many misconceptions are made about the plainness of medieval clothing; it wasn't. Embroideries, trim, and don't forget accessories too. we had the capacity to and we did make fine clothing back in the middle ages. Not everyone had decorative garb, but even lower artisans had good clothing. I just joined the sca over in Wisconsin, and sadly our group is too small and unorganized(lol)but I will change that ;)

SCA is global not just an "American thing" And if anyone takes the time to go to the sites that have been provided, you can probably find a shire, or Barony in your area. Whether or not it is the same or near LARP depends on the LARP you are part of, just like The Ren Faires, all are different. We do not recreate we research and try to bring the best from the past. Without actual death and plagues, we strive to bring a dream to life. But see your yourself! Check us out!

11OBlitzO11...agreed. Life during that period had to be a major struggle. In a way, its just human nature to romanticize anything that's in our past. The SCA is just a living glimpse honoring those more idyllic moments along with the safest way to replicate battle engagements. Thank you for watching my video and your comments. If you ever get a chance to attend one of our events, look me up...I'm Edward, son of Robert. I'll buy you a tankard if ale (grin). Cheers!

nathan scarabin I went to this as simply a news story and was shooting what we call as B-roll or cutaway footage. I had never been to this event before and the audio is mostly nat sound (mic on camera). It wasn't intended for public viewing but after I got to the event, I became more intrigued by what I was filming. I was also being rushed along by a media event guide. I tried getting the best of what I shot which was about three hours of video and crunched it down to this. Since this video...I've been to Gulf Wars three times as a participant. It's my most anticipated event of the year...better than Christmas...Lol. But I do not take a camera. I just want to immerse and let my job as a reporter, fade away. Anyway, thanks for watching.

it's an honor system. If you get hit in the back of the head or a certain amount of blows in vital areas or you get knocked down you are obliged to walk back to the home flag and counted as dead. However, there are judges in the ranks who will tap you out if you are less than honorable. Lol

I don't think that is entirely accurate as I am sure people living during those times didn't think it was a walk in the park. But I agree most Americans have the same ancestors as those who did live in that time so they are just as ... justified in reliving the time.
