It wasn't underrated at all. It was nominated for 6 Academy Awards and won 3 of them, apart from 6 nominations from BAFTA and 9 nominations from the Satellite Awards. Its OST won a Golden Globe and Gong Li and Zhang Ziyi were also praised by their roles. Really, you folks should learn how to use the word "underrated". It is one of those overused words in the Internet that has lost its meaning because stupid comments like this one.

I really wanna know how long she was fighting for the chairman. She must've been like 11 or 12 when she met the chairman the first time and when she was 15 she saw him again. But at this scene, don't know how old she was.

She was 9 when she first met him. I don't think a year passed after her fall, seeing how she was still in bandages when meeting him. Then she was 15 the second encounter. After that? I'm not sure ^^; Safe to say she fought for a long time for him.

In the book she first meets the Chairman at the age of 9 in 1929 and this scene is set just after the end of WWII, so 1945/6. So that's almost 17 years.

First of all I don't know the book, I'm talking only about the movie. I was amazed by this when I was younger. Now, when I'm older, it creeps me out a little bit. He found a little orphan girl, bought her an ice cream...and recommend her to his friends - pimps to get the girl out of the streets and rise the girl as a geisha...to meet her again when she grews up and fall in love? Soo... exactly what was his intentions when he saw the orphan?

You're not wrong that the age difference makes the relationship feel strange, but remember that the Chairman only sent Mameha to Chiyo after he saw her again in the garden. Granted, she was 15 in that scene by the movie's admission, so the implication still isn't great. But the point is that I believe his intention when he first met her was purely to cheer her up, and I would assume he went several years without giving the moment a second thought.

I read the book a long time ago so I don't quite remember, but honestly he never seemed entirely uninvested in her in that way. It is possible to pretend otherwise for the sake of a more palatable story, and maybe it really is just Chiyo's wishful thinking. However, there are many men in the novel who were comfortable with looking at Chiyo like that and women as well, if only for business reasons and it's never really treated as something that's out of place. The world of the novel would not condemn his early interest, especially in balance of his "kindness." I'm not even sure the author would. I've seen interviews of his talking about the story and he seems rather titillated by the whole thing. Ultimately, it is simply a work of fiction to take as you will.

I feel like the author just kind of wrote himself into a corner and couldn’t figure out how to do it without making the Chairman seem like a paedophile so he just went “eh, maybe no one will notice”.

It's grooming for sure, I did watch the movie when I was little and read the book a few years ago. They try to make it seem cute and ambiguous but it did not convince me at all. she even confirmed that this was grooming by saying that every step that she has taken since she was a child was to get closer to him

It’s an unintentionally skeevy plotline by an author who turned out to be pretty shady (see: Iwasaki Mineko).

Depends on your culture or mindset. It looks like true love between willing adults to me. He never preyed on her. He protected her from some very venomous women that might have ruined her.
