What’s the Memoirs of a Geisha movie about?
In 1929, a young girl from a poor fishing village in Japan, Chiyo (Suzuka Ohgo), and her sister Satsu (Samantha Futerman) are sold by their father to the owner of a geisha house. They are quickly separated and Chiyo finds herself confronted with the strictness of the housekeeper and the harshness of the life of an apprentice geisha. She also has to face the jealousy-ridden hostility of Hatsumomo (Gong Li), the star geisha of the house, who succeeds in relegating her to the status of a simple servant. Chiyo has lost all hope when she is suddenly seduced by the kindness of a man (Ken Watanabe), chairman of an electricity company, with whom she falls in love. She then decides to do everything she can to deserve his attention. Another geisha, Mameha (Michelle Yeho), takes her under her wing and begins to teach her the rudiments of the trade by becoming her "big sister". Thanks to Mameha and helped by her determination, she soon becomes, under the name Sayuri (Zhang Ziyi), a famous and admired geisha throughout Hanamachi. But success does not bring her closer to the one she secretly loves because a geisha no longer has the right to love. Moreover, Nobu (Kōji Yakusho), the president's close friend, is interested in Sayuri and interposes himself between them. It will take the Japanese rout of World War II and the end of age-old traditions for Sayuri and the president to finally be together.

It’s not weird. The chairman was supposed to be in his late twenties here, and Chiyo was approaching adolescence. Iwamura saw a sad and hurting child and had compassion on her. He wanted to show her kindness to bring a little light into her life and remind her she was worthy of respect and dignity. He gave her a gift ****without expecting anything in return****. He did not bribe her, he did not ask to see her again, he did not attach strings to his gift, he did not manipulate her, he did not oppress her, he did not disrespect her. His next interaction with her happens after she has entered adulthood and he recognizes her by her blue eyes, seeing how her situation of slavery and poverty has not changed, and he has compassion for her again. He sends a beacon of light to her again in the form of Mameha, giving her a chance at a respectable living, and a life away from the destitution she faces every day. As she develops into a formidable and desirable woman, with a bright mind and kind spirit, he begins to develop romantic feelings for her, watching her blossom into a paragon of beauty and art and goodness not only in her career, but in her womanhood as well. He honors her always, and continually puts her interests before his own. He did not groom her or trick her in any way, he showed her kindness and respect and that’s why she was drawn to him in the first place.

It's not about sexual love, but delivering kindness to a kid when you noticed that the kid need to be given an empathy. Than could be the higlight of the day for the kid, and remembered by the kid for the rest of his/her life. Maybe because she's as old as his children so that made him give her an act of mercy. Secondly, her eyes that made him remembers her, and secretly helped her in the background. That memory of 1 kindness is cheering her up when she grow up, quietly helping her to facing her daily struggle, inspiring her to have a thing to do in this life. Gave her a sense of hope & aim in life. She became fond of him as her "role model", "idol", etc.; That one person that's good in her life..... Eventually she became a woman, who's loving him in secret. Actually, in a real life a female student can become fond of her teacher. After a few years finished her school year, she then married to her beloved teacher. So this story is something in that line....

However you spin it, this is grooming, plain and simple. It was clear to him that she was part of an okiya, he commented on her physical attributes (eyes, smile), and went on to make it his business to ensure she was trained to be a geisha (i.e. in a position to sexually entertain him). While this cannot be judged by today's standards, it's still creepy as hell that people find it romantic

Chairman-how did you come by such enchanting eyes Chiyo-decided after her encounter with the chairman where he was kind in some parts despite having known him not long at all that she was in love ??? I signed up to be a geisha a place in his world I'm glad chiyo finds love and happiness in the end and in a geisha world it's not impossible But it would have could have been a option to have a long term friendship with the chairman where he looked out for people that would be her danias that wouldn't be weird like Dr crab and he could have introduced her to one of his grown children at the time and then they could have fallen in love her son could have been on of her long term Dania But yes age is just a number lots of many age bracket relationships that are happy and love is love it's just the meeting as a child and him a fully grown man I feel weird and odd about I'm sorry I can't shift that but when their adults it's less weird aslong as their happy I dunno what's everyone's thoughts ??? 😂

Just a head’s up for some important info on Japan for context : the age of consent for sex changed from 13 years old to 16 years old just this past summer 2023. Also, pre-war time, Japanese have always been more liberal when in comes to sex. It stems from the Heian period where after the Meiji era regulated matters more in order to emulate a more so called civilized western approach because of the reopening of the country by the Americans. Hence, don’t be surprised if this chairman fell for a child.

The aspect of her having blue eyes is essential to the story, it wouldn't be the same without it. Plus, it looks great on these actresses.

John Chapter 16 7Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. 8And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9Of sin, because they believe not on me; 10Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; 11Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. 12I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. 13Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. 14He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
