[SayArt] "Seoul Museum's Exhibit: 'Life of Jesus' Set in Joseon Korea”
The late artist Kim Ki-chang created a unique series of paintings called "The Life of Jesus," now displayed at Seoul Museum. In these paintings, he reimagined biblical scenes with a Korean twist. Instead of the usual angel Gabriel, imagine a fairy-like "seonnyeo" telling the Virgin Mary about Jesus. Picture baby Jesus born in a Joseon Kingdom stable, surrounded by women in traditional Korean "hanbok."
Kim, raised in a Christian family, started this series during the Korean War in 1952. Upon the suggestion of U.S. missionary Anders Kristian Jensen, he painted scenes from Jesus' life against the backdrop of Joseon Korea to reflect the pain and despair of war. The series seamlessly blends Christian imagery with Korean landscapes, architecture, and clothing.
For example, the infant Jesus is wrapped in a traditional "jeogori" top, visited by Three Wise Men in Joseon-era crimson robes. Mary is shown in a thatched-roof hovel wearing a noblewoman's headwear called "sseugaechima." Even "The Last Supper" features Christ and apostles resembling Confucian scholars, wearing traditional "gat" hats and "dopo" robes.
Kim's series gained international recognition and was displayed in Berlin in 2017 as part of a exhibition celebrating the 500th anniversary of the Reformation.
