What's inside of Buckingham Palace?

Фильм және анимация

Buckingham Palace is in London and its the home to the Queen and to the Royal Family. In this video I show you as much as I can about the interior of the building! Unfortunately not everything is public but we'll do the best we can. I'll show you where the famous rooms are such as: throne room, music room, white drawing room, ball room, grand staircase and more!

    I worked at Buckingham Palace for many years. The rooms either side of the Centre Room are guest suits. The rooms on the floor above are apartments lived in by The Duke of York (Prince Andrew) to the left as you face the Palace. The rooms to the Right are Apartments lived in by The Princess Royal when in residence. The rooms above the balcony is The Princess Royals office.

    Have you seen the Queen's private apartments? I have heard that despite the glamour of the British Royalty, their "private apartments" are relatively modest. Is that true? Certainly, it is know that Balmoral Castle has no central heating system. It is often cold and drafty there!

  • @mscott3918

    @mscott3918

    5 жыл бұрын

    Trevor Stolz Balmoral is chilly, and if you want to have a private conversation, then you have to put the plug in the plug hole. Sandringham isn't really very nice either. Lots of small rooms. In the room where the Duke of Clarence died, by stretching out your arm from the bed, which is against one wall, you can touch the other wall. The rooms at the Palace are much nicer and just being properly renovated for the first time since the 1950s. They are comfortable in a traditional upper class English style, with lots of old furniture and fabrics, and nothing too gilded or elaborate. Very similar to dozens of houses around the country. Very much like mine actually.

    Neat video! I love this kind of stuff! One error I caught: “This group of islands is called the United Kingdom” The group of islands is known as the British Isles. The largest island is Great Britain, which consists of (as your video shows), England, Scotland, and Wales. The smaller island that you can clearly see is Ireland, which consists of Northern Ireland, and the Republic of Ireland. The United Kingdom (in full, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Island) is a sovereign nation, consisting of the aforementioned nations, except of course for the Republic of Ireland. The British Isles also include two much smaller islands: the Isle of Man, and the Hebrides, along with a huge number of even smaller islands.

    There is a story that when Sarah Ferguson first lived in Buckingham Palace as the wife of Prince Andrew, and he was away on naval service, rather than ring for staff to bring a snack, she decided just to wander down to the kitchen by herself. After walking for one and a quarter miles she still hadn't found it! Another story is that when the Queen was not there Diana went around the corridors on roller skates because the distances were so great. Diana did not live at Buckingham Palace but she did swim there regularly and attend meetings and functions all the time.

    @@liuzhou The United Kingdom is the union of the Kingdoms of England and Scotland. It also includes the principality of Wales and the counties of Northern Ireland. King James I of England and VI of Scotland wanted to unite the two kingdoms and wished to style himself King of Britain. Parliament vetoed this but, as you say, the Kingdoms of England and Scotland were eventually united in 1707 but they are still in a sense separate and, even before devolution and the establishment of a Scottish parliament, they had separate and distinctive laws and education systems. We are entitled to refer to the Kingdom of England and to the Kingdom of Scotland because, though united as Great Britain, they still exist as entities in themselves. To give an example, when she's in England, HMQ is the Governor of the Church of England but when she crosses the border she has no formal authority over the Church of Scotland.

  • @liuzhou

    @liuzhou

    5 жыл бұрын

    You are talking nonsense. She is head of the Church of England no matter where she is. She doesn't stop becoming head because she is travelling. Similarly, she is not head of the Queen of Scotland when she is in England, Scotland, China or the USA. It is totally irrelevant. She has many official titles. Queen of England is NOT one of them - end of story. Your logic would also suggest that when she is visiting a country where she is not queen, she is thereby temporarily not queen if those countries where she is queen. Riduculous.

  • @271250cl

    @271250cl

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@liuzhou You aren't reading what I wrote carefully enough and your inference is therefore absurd. I did not say that HMQ stops being the Supreme Governor of the C of E when she's in Scotland, I merely said that she has no authority over the Scottish church - though she does send a Commissioner to C of Scotland synods, or whatever they call their meetings. (Incidentally, your irritation with me is playing havoc with your syntax. By 'stop becoming' I assume you mean 'stop being'! And what on earth does 'she is not head of the Queen of Scotland' mean? And as for 'when she is visiting a country where she is not queen, she is thereby temporarily not queen if those countries where she is queen' - I can make no sense of it.) I'm not much bothered about what her official titles are, I'm merely pointing out that there is a Kingdom of England and a Kingdom of Scotland. They are united, yes, but they are distinct entities with different traditions, customs, laws, religions, legal and educational systems.

The UK comprises Great Britain, about 1/6 of the island of Ireland in the northeast, and the Channel Islands and various smaller ones, like Anglesey and the Shetlands.

    You mentioned the ‘Throne’ room, officially Buckingham Palace is just the Monarch’s office. St. James’ Palace (just around the corner from Buckingham Palace and adjoined to Clarence House (where Prince Charles lives when in London)) is the official residence of the Monarch and is where the actual throne is, although the Queen never sleeps at St. James’ Palace by personal choice.

    It's not really worded correctly for where the voice-over falls. If I were locating London this way (which I wouldn't actually bother to do) I would say: This group of islands is the British Isles. The United Kingdom is made up of the largest island, Great Britain- comprising England, Scotland and Wales - and Northern Ireland, and nearly all of the smaller islands. London is the capital of the United Kingdom and the official home of the monarch.

    The Queen is guarded by five regiments of the foot guards and The Household Cavalry. They are all active frontline troops and more than a few a combat veterans.
