Great seminar! I would love more experienced pilots do seminars like this to instruct with their experiences and live stories.

Clarification on squelch at about the 15 minute mark. Adjusting squelch does NOT adjust the receiver's sensitivity, It adjusts the threshold above the receiver's noise floor where the audio amplifier that drives the speakers in the headset is "turned on". Very informative presentation. Thanks!

Layman term for squelch is a variable mute threshold, the mute level being determined by RF signal strength. Actually dropping the squelch off is a good way to check volume settings, and that the headphones are actually working.

It's a shame they didn't let him talk longer. I actually LEARNED things from Bruce's presentation!

Being a "ground pounder' with an eye toward the sky, I have been interested in a lot of things about aviation. However, it seems that understanding what is being said on the radio is one of the most difficult things for me to do. It kinda seems that a lot of pilots have their "radio voice" where they try to sound cool or something. I loved this video as it was very informational and humorous.

Definitely great video. These never get boring. It's always nice to be reminded or refreshed on communications. Even if you take only 1 thing out of videos like these even after years of flying then it's 1 lesson that you may remember that could save your life so to me it's worth it for sure.

You are only supposed to use your abbreviated call sign after the controller refers to you by the abbreviated call sign. He might know of someone else in the area with the same abbreviated call sign as you.

Great video, amazing lessons to be learned here.

I don't agree with his point about "checking in/with you." It lets the controller know you've transferred to their frequency from another frequency, as opposed to just reporting your altitude or making initial contact. Sure, in most cases, they already know this and are expecting you, but not always. What if you're on the wrong frequency? It takes up all of maybe one second to say, and provides meaningful context. And yes, when I leave, I will be checking out - "Frequency change approved."

Shiny Rayquazza agreed. During cruise at FL350, especially if center is busy, I always say, "checking in." There's nothing wrong with it.

"Any traffic in the area, please advise." Personally, this one is sometimes necessary. Say you're landing at an uncontrolled field and have just been told by atc "frequency change approved". It doesn't matter what was said 45 seconds or even 4 seconds before you actually changed frequencies, you want to know what's going on now. Just saying "Bonanza 7326W is 6 miles north inbound runway 31 full stop" might not cue anyone that you just now came on the ctaf. I don't think it hurts one thing to find out if there is any traffic you need to be looking for. But, I hear people every day saying how stupid that request is when all you want it is to find out what is happening on a frequency you've just switched to at an airport you're less than 2 or 3 minutes from... Somebody may have just departed and is heading your direction.

+Alan Waggoner - Years ago on a student pilot solo I had another airplane following me around the practice area. I kept announcing my position (on the air-to-air freq) because I wasn't really sure if he could see me. Finally I said "any aircraft in the area please advise" and a split second later I'm getting bitched out by someone for saying it. I really don't care if it is necessary to say it everyone else can suck it up.

Alan Waggoner sometimes when I feel like it I'll say conflicting traffic please advice just in case some people don't announce where they are. Sometimes no one is talking and they are where I am at or where I am trying to go.

He is self announcing his intentions to use the active runway, which depends on the headwind and other factors at the uncontrolled airport.

I agree with this video except the point about "with you". The idea is to be clear while not using too many words. 'With you' says you're just completing the handoff and talking to this specific controller for the first time, as opposed to someone who had already made contact with this ATC. Useful when airplanes have call signs that sound the same, it helps you to differentiate from the one you asked to call you back when they reach FL240, as opposed to the one who is handed off at FL240.

OK, so tally ho- a little out dated. It was used more for when spotting enemy aircraft etc. Plane in sight is for allies. There was a stray cat walking across the taxiway and was advised by the controller to "beware of the cat". I used tally ho on the cat LOL.

Some people don't speak in a uncontrolled airport.... I think if you are trying to take off at a runway and you don't hear anyone then I think it's okay to say "conflicting traffic please advise."

So when we get a hand off we can't say; "thanks for the party, let's do it again at my house"?

Is it ok to salute controllers? My FI is stressing me on that, but during the radiotelephony course I was advised, by actual controllers, to avoid it...

i think he asked if anyone was in the pattern at the moment.....which is a stupid question because there were several people on the radio saying where they were, but he wasn't paying attention.

uh...at 25:56 Landsberg admonishes, "telling the controller you Have the Numbers" is not correct. ( numbers means, have wind and runway) goes on jovially adding, 'btw, which NUMBERS, do you have?' with a chuckle at the pilots expense. is it just me, or do i recall the FAR/AIM Phraseology chapter, "Approving" that particular option for the Pilot, in Leiu of obtaining a full ATIS broadcast, for the myriad reasons, one might imagine? jeez. shorts a bit tight there "landsberg" huh?

Is anyone in these examples even aware of the push-THINK-speak principle? The first half of the radio calls are missing. *No, I do not believe the controller assigned you 500 ft altitude.*

If the phonetic alphabet is meant to lessen miscommunication why is there a disparity between the US Army's pronunciation "VIK-ter" and the FAA's pronunciation "VIK-tah"?

ageed. Bruce' presentation here was very thorough, and he illuminated a number of poignant issues.... however one or two, such as the one you refer to, 'isn't necessarily as much a 'frowned upon taboo, as he makes out. just sounds like there were a couple items that 'he, personally, didn't care for. certainly doesn't mean it renders them entirely void. only illustrates that, there are as many 'acceptalbe or 'passable ways to do things, as there are 'pilots', admonishing against it..

can I become an ATC or flight dispatcher? I got an economic degree with no knowledge or experience in aviation.

Matthew B . I did an online ATC 5 mins test by nav canada. Not sure how I failed, certain I answer the questions correctly , probably didn't answered enough. I"ll try again next year.

This wasn't very helpful to me. I think what makes communication most frustration.. is all the static... and the use of this God damn military phoentic alphabet that you brain literally has to slow way down and jump through the hoops to deconstruct and interpret. It's adoption was to clear up confusion between similar sounding letters but it has literally polluted the airwaves with oceans of chartfunk. If you say to me on the radio: "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot Beechcraft sixxer ninner golf!" my brain can take up to 20 God damn seconds to figure out and then process what you just said instead of you just saying like a normal fucking human being "what the fuck Beechcraft sixty nine G". It gets really bad when there is a lot of communication of long strings of this rubbish to multiple airplanes... and your brain is literally left behind trying to interpret still something said 20 seconds ago... to the point you're really not hearing a god damn thing...

That's funny, because I have a vintage antique motor glider in my living room, designed by the same guy that designed and built the Starship Enterprise. Disagree entirely. Phonetics can save pilots and controllers an infinite amount of time more than it can take away. For example... I was getting a flight following to an airport for a solo cross country about a week or so ago. On the approach frequency, there was a guy who wanted a flight following to Venango airport in PA (KFKL). When telling ATC the identifier, he didn't use phonetics. Over the radio, it was hard to distinguish the F from an S, and the controller thought he meant SKL. It took them a lot more time to figure out than it should've. Phonetics aren't hard to pick up and understand.
