Saxophone Repair Topic: Assembly of the Conn Saxophone Microtuner

Музыка

Saxophone repairman Matt Stohrer of www.StohrerMusic.com tries to do saxophone repair through a viewfinder as he nearly bungles the assembly of the Conn microtuner neck, but somehow not only gets it together but manages to impart some wisdom about how it works, why it was made, and what to watch out for.
For a great writeup on the Conn microtuner, see here: www.shwoodwind.co.uk/HandyHint...

Thanks, Matt, very helpful. My microtuner is jammed, so I needed to see the internal workings to understand how it *ought* to work. Nicely done.

Great Vid Matt! I'm still going to have take my Microtuner to a real tech despite your awesome explanation. After seeing this vid, I'm probably going to pay the man what he asks for and not balk at the price that spits out of his mouth. lol....

Matt, I have a New Wonder Series 2 that is missing its locking ring on the micro tuner. Is there a way to purchase a replacement? What would you suggest I do?

***** I have a micro tuner on my Conn New Wonder Series 1, would you suggest keeping the micro tuner or removing it? It works fine, but i find it easier to adjust the mouthpiece manually

I don't know the size off the top of my head, but it's going to be a 0-80 or 1-72 or maybe 1-64 panhead slotted machine screw. You can get this from hobby supply, industrial supply, or they will be labeled as flat spring screws from musical instrument repair supply.

Wow, I've never heard of a microtuner before. I've always wondered why something didn't exist to address the geometry changes from regular mouthpiece tuning, and now I learn that it does exist. Why isn't this standard?

Hard to make, lots to go wrong. Conn abandoned it when they had to cut costs in the 50s at the start of their long slide into company-in-brand-name-only.
