Sax Zim Bog, Minnesota: Snowshoe Hare vs Red Squirrel

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

We felt so lucky to have this cooperative Snowshoe Hare! It was so funny to see the Red Squirrel chase it away. Snowshoe Hares are usually nocturnal, but the seed available at this feeder must have been irresistible! They are white in the winter and brown in the summer.
This was at the end of Gray Jay Way for those of you familiar with Sax Zim Bog.

This might be the best video I’ve ever seen in my life. I love snowshoe hares. I ski with them all the time in the Uintas backcountry. With their enormous fuzzy feet, they can easily outpace me on skis, even when descending at high speeds in soft deep snow!

That is so interesting about how fast they are compared to you on skis. I think it was probably a once in a lifetime event that I witnessed.

This popped up on my feed today and I had to do a double-take. My in-laws live in Zim, and I’ve been out in the Zim Bog area many times. Such a beautiful location!

That's ok! 😜 It was such fun watching the interaction between that squirrel and the hare. I didn't really catch it, but the hare chased off the grosbeaks several times. I think it just wanted to be in control of something . . .

How did you keep from laughing while filming this? Did you make it up there again this winter or was this from last winter? I hear this is a good year from Evening Grosbeaks.

This was from last weekend. And there were several people standing around (all waiting for a Boreal Chickadee). Everyone laughing and exclaiming. This went on for dozens of minutes! So much fun. There were Evening Grosbeaks everywhere! I've only been up there twice before, only saw them at Mary Lou's feeders. This year, everywhere.

Poor hare was hungry, but the squirrel was actually scary to it. Squirrels hurt hares and rabbits all the time and even eat them if they can, especially the babies.
