If you are looking for the best water filter for hiking, Backpacking, Hunting or emergency preparedness preps like your Bug out Bag. I believe that the Sawyer water filter fits the bill and if you want to make things easier add on this small cleaning coupling. In this video I show 3 tips on how to use the Sawyer cleaning coupling in filtering water with the sawyer squeeze in multiple configurations even using the Cnoc Vecto Containers as a gravity filter, how to backflush the sawyer squeeze with the cleaning coupling and finally how to prefilter water using the cleaning coupling. I love the simplicity of the Sawyer Squeeze and the Versatility. Also, it can be used with a number of bottles and bags, and it can also be set up as a gravity system. We all want clean drinking water, especially in an Emergency Disaster. This water filter is a great survival tool to have on hand when that boil alert comes in or you are out hiking and backpacking. Really good idea on the pre-filter!
Because the coupling is normally at the clean end of the filter, if you use the coupling for the pre-filtering with the bandana it will now have been in contact with the bad water and then can't be used on the clean end to do the final squeeze filtration?

In most circumstances, if not all, you are not completely out of clean water when you begin filtering. Simply rinse the coupling. If you are bone dry there has been a failure. Lastly I don’t worry too much about the amount contamination on a few threads of a dried coupling.

Nice job. Any tips for restoring a sawyer squeeze filter that worked GREAT last year, but seems plugged now?

Thank you White vinegar has worked the best for me. Try soaking it in vinegar for 30 minutes or so then back flush and forward flush with warm water. Hopefully you have some water movement now. If not soak longer in vinegar. Once you have water movement Take a syringe full of vinegar and back flush it then soak it for another hour. Now back to the warm water back flushing and forward flushing. Hopefully that helps
My sawyer doesn't even filter black coffee back into clear water is that normal?
Great video. I getting ready for the PCT in 2024. Many hikers post for the need of the coupling in gear videos but never explain the method. I am using the coupling with two cnuc bags for extra liters in the desert with a 6 liter max capacity. Most carries will be only 2 liter however. I was using a pump filter. Thanks for the clear video explaining the basics!
