Hi Tom, really enjoying the videos. Trying to catch up on all your previous videos in my spare time, sitting here in the tractor 😂 During the winter, I bed our male goats on 6 inches of wood chip from leylandii trees, with straw on top & just keep topping it off with straw every week or 2 till the end of winter. Saves me time & money. The straw stays super dry & the antibacterial agents in the leylandia wood keeps everything bacteria free ! Cleaning out is a breeze, which I do by hand as the tractor doesn't fit in the door to that shed. I used saw dust from hardwood trees the previous year & a few of them ended up with fungal infections despite the sawdust being dry as well as it not seeming warm enough compared to straw. I'm only a small time farmer, trying out different things before I move onto bigger & better things hopefully. Anyway, Greetings from Ireland & keep up the good work! 👍🏻

We chop.our straw but due to our supply going down abit because we are selling some to neighbouring farms because they have no bedding we bought sawdust at a similar price and choppin our straw into a pile and then mix the straw and sawdust in the mixer wagon to make our straw last abit longer its a real pain but has to be done,gr8 vid tom

Granted I've never been around dairy. Around here.beleive it or not that use straw as a filler in cattle feed in some of the feed lots. But to my uneducated eye, other than the dust aspect, it's a good alternative to straw. You had said you were worried about the composting aspect. Again I'm just a lawymen, but I would think it would break down as good as straw, especially the fact there been bacteria interoduced from the manure. Enjoyed the video Tom.

I use used sawdust. A horse trading company near by buys white sawdust, does it under the horses and every day they shovel out the wet spots. They throw in my dumptrailer and collect it once a week. Using it over 35 years, very good results. Important is that there's no bark in the sawdust or else the klebsiëlla bacteria can cause huge problems. Thanks for the video

We are in a huge straw shortage this year . We have had a hard winter and had 6' of snow and lots of -40 days and 2 months where -20 was warm, I just bought 70 4x4x8 square bales and it was $100/ton CDN funds in the fall it was $60-$80. We are in such a shortage that a lot of guys are bedding on green feed or slough hay. I try to have 500 big round bales of straw for winter because everything lives outside but this year we used up the straw fast.

Personally I think the sawdust works quite well! We don't have to much of an issue with straw at the moment. We were lucky and managed to get a lot in. We sold a lot of wheat straw and got back nearly twice as much OSR straw because we use a lot of it for the outer yards. Thankfully we have enough wheat and barley straw to last us. But sawdust don't look bad!

Have you adjusted your rations (either for nutritional balance or quantity per head) for the cattle in view of them eating some straw bedding and of course not for the sawdust / woodchip material? I imagine that it would be best to heap and store the sawdust material for a while for it to rot down otherwise it will be slow to rot if spread "fresh" on the land. - this may get sucked up also into any silage?

Why is the straw so expensive in your area? Is it a 100% dairy area or do other farmers use/sell it for something other than livestock? Here in Denmark baled straw is very expensive this year because of a wet harvest. 1-1,2 euro cent/kg+the cost of transport. Usually it is quite a bit cheaper.

wet harvest in 2017, alot of arable farmers turned on the chopper on the combine rather than messing about trying to bale wet straw.

My uncle is using peat moss under his in calf heifers. Not sure of the cost. 14 heifers are Bedded once a month on it. It’s cleaned out every time before bedding. Cattle are very clean compared with straw and the peat is super dung for the fields

I live in Lancaster, Pennsylvania U.S. (Dairy country). The trend here is "Pasture Mat" for comfort which requires fewer shavings. Their knees are protected and it's a quick and less costly cleanup. I got it for my very small set up and my cows love it! Here shavings and straw are pretty evenly priced if you know where to shop. I use shavings under straw for calves.
