Ya know, I feel like what Jigsaw does, and his motivation, don't mesh well together. Isn't he trying to make his victims appreciate life more, or something, because he has cancer? He makes people who waste their lives fight through terrible shit so they can live because his time is short and they should value life, right? It's weird in the movies too, but here we have people just tied down and waiting for someone else to come kill them. Even if those four people are also addicts, and whoever else he considers to be wasting their lives, it doesn't make sense that they don't have a chance to survive, based on what I know of Jigsaw's character. "Now you will learn to value your life by dying while you're blindfolded and tied to this bed, probably with no idea what's going on, why this is happening, or that this is meant to be a lesson to you." I think what I'm trying to say is, Jigsaw's just a dick, he just made the value of life thing up so people won't think he has no justification and is crazy, he just likes to torture people.

it is entirely in character. Saw is meant to feed a savage and sadistic understanding of justice, where people who "do bad" need to be forced to stop with suffering, terror and horror. The whole "appreciate life" idea is the kind of bullshit used by "protectors of humanity" criminals throughout history. Saw just made a commercial icon out of this instinct, nothing more

Tommy Daig I think it's more of "You've wasted your life up to this point. Since you don't seem to feel like it matters, let's see how far you'll go to stay alive." In the movies he had people who had swindled dying patients out of money for treatments, doctors who killed people, etc. he was pushing them to see what they'd do to survive, and to make them understand what they put others through by choosing their fates for them by denying them treatment. It's not that they don't have a chance, it's that they wasted their prior chances and now have to fight for their lives and fight for a chance to make it out alive. They'll come out feckin traumatized and probably have lost a limb, but they'll be alive. But I do see your point, he is rather sadistic and the method he does it isn't the best way it could've been done.
