Tim, some sort of twig stove is on my Need-to-Purchase-Soon list. Thanks for the review! I have been leaning heavily towards a Firebox titanium 5" stove, but other purchases need to happen first. I just pulled the trigger on a pair of Pathfinder stainless steel canteens. I've been wanting to purchase two of them for some time, and although I could afford the price, something kept me from purchasing one until a few minutes ago. I had set my phone aside earlier this afternoon for several hours so I didn't get the notification that Dave Canterbury had posted a new video until just prior to typing this post. When I picked up the phone and went onto KZread, the first thing that I saw was his new video with the header containing the information that Pathfinder is now selling their 39 oz. wide-mouth stainless steel canteen with a newly released canteen cup that has really substantial batwing handles instead of the U-shaped, fold around the sides and bottom Vietnam War-era style handle that my issued U.S.G.I. canteen cup had when I served as a 91B medic back between 1976-1979. So, I purchssed one of each style, because I want the option of possibly cooking in the canteen cup and there's no denying that the long, U-shaped handle will provide substantially greater stability over a batwing handled cup if placed in any kind of campfire where settling and shifting coals have a tendency towards allowing standard canteen cups to tip over and spill their contents. Been there and done that too many times to remember when I was younger and still using a purchased U.S.G.I.-style canteen cup with flimsy batwing handles in campfires. Along with my two, Finnish Defense Forces 1-liter plastic canteens, the 2 Pathfinder canteens give me the potential ability to carry 145.2 oz. or 1.13-gallons or 4.32-liters of water.

I appreciate the simplicity of your stove. And the smiley face is just icing on the cake. But more than that, I appreciate that you’re simply happy with what you have. Blessed is the one who understands the value of contentment. Years ago (before FireBox and all the titanium ultra light and hinged models hit the market) I bought a similar flat panel stove made by Emberlit. It was novel in its time. And made of stainless so is now considered “too heavy!” for most stove and gear experts today. But can it warm me on a cold day? Yes. Does it cook my food and brew a hot cup of coffee? Yes. Does it fit my pack, my budget and my “what’s the hurry” way of enjoying the outdoors? Yes. So that’s the stove I use and enjoy to this day. Like your Savotta; it’s simple, effective and just right for my purposes. Thanks for posting this video. I thoroughly enjoyed it. 👍

I might do this, but I have to be careful. I don't want to get too crazy and make this a job, because I will lose my passion for doing this. But doing a commercial or 2 for the hospice I will always have passion for. This is the last place these people will see on this Earth, I want it to be beautiful

Hi Tim. If you haven't already, could you explain soon what the overall level of water protection of Savotta gear is? The grabbag / assault pack I have been issued (36L) is not waterproof to any extend (sometimes even though it is dry outside it even magically manages to soak up water from the ground and soak whatever I've packed inside, quite impressive if you ask me) and I've seen the plastic looking canvas inside Savotta gear and I'm really impressed and curious to its overall effectiveness. Even though my unit will certainly not allow me to wear a Savotta bag for camouflage reasons, I'd still really appreciate your experience on the matter.

  • @Tim_Keys

Haha the old issue assault pack, mine had the padding ripped out probably 5 years before I ever had my hands on it. And yes definitely, I actually have a test in mind to show it because I have been feeling like I missed talking about it a lot of times so far. But what I can tell you is that for a short light rain you will have no issues, but when the rain comes down a bit heavier you might see it come through the sewing seems a little bit. A drybag backpack liner or (what I prefer) a rain cover is always a great idea to at least have with you

@@Tim_Keys great to hear, I will be on high alert for any new videos soon! Because I'm not in the US army like you have been (if I recall your previous videos correctly) but the Dutch army, I am looking specifically for performance in "soaked in 30 seconds" rain. This content does not really exist on youtube except for very specific civilian rain gear. Luckily I do have an issued rain cover for my pack as well, but sometimes you're sat in the arsenal cleaning guns on a supposedly bright sunny day with all your gear lined up outside when it starts pouring down olympic swimming pools every second and you're not allowed to go outside to grab your stuff because of gun rules. So I not only have an interest in the backpacks, but certainly the pouches too because of the above scenario. But I've spoken too much now, I shall keep quiet and watch more Savotta gear videos!

Oh no man it's never too long for a fellow soldier. And yes I was US Army, but everything you describe I can relate to whole heartedly. I have been stationed all over and I've seen rivers fall from the sky on the day we decided to pull and inventory the entire armory :) What I can tell you, is that my buddy in France lost his Jääkäri M in a river, fully loaded, and it floated for a long time and gave him a good amount of time to retrieve it from the water. I will try to film something for you today, we might actually have a storm come through if the mountains don't deflect it

The fabric is PU coated on the inside so it is guite waterproof but the fail points are the seams.

  • @leka34

PU coating on the inside helps during shorter showers, but during extended periods water and humidity will seep through. Generally I would advice dry bags for stuff you don't want to get wet. In FDF the usual trick was to throw a garbage bag inside the main compartment of your bag. It's a very cheap and lightweight way to add an essentially waterproof liner. But dry bags will last you longer, and help with organizing too.

I will never ask Savotta for money. I have a good relationship with the whole crew up there now and I do not want to complicate things, it never crossed my mind to ask them and it never will. I'm thinking someone big and not complicated, like reaching out to SkillShare or one of those language apps.

This stove would not be my choice. The only good thing to say about is „it is from Savotta“. There are a lot of better options, like firebox stoves, bushcraft essential stoves, wikatech stoves, solo stoves and above all the xfire stoves (or mobile campfire). I have tested all of them and can speak from experience.

@@Tim_Keys That stove's got personality, and personality goes a long way as Jules Winnfield put it. Only reason I don't own one is I bit the bullet and bought a Firebox before the Happy Stove was out and that thing will last me the rest of my life.

Good things: -From Savotta -2 year warranty -Cordura case -Unique design (this IS a USP to some and you don't get to control that) -Made in Europe -250g I think it deserves its place in the market and can differ itself enough from other products :)

@@Tim_Keys Seriously. The smiley face is so adorable I don't really care how much better other ones are. It's a box with holes to make fire in. Not to mention most of those other brands they mentioned seem to be 1.5-3x the price.
