The Sumacs is a private estate in Washington CT that is a member of the @GardenConservancy and participates in the organization's Open Days. The property is set on nine expansive acres and encompasses several different gardens: a formal potager enclosed by a hedge of yews, a cutting garden, orchard, and perennial gardens. The serene landscape features rock outcroppings, boxwood hedges, intriguing sculptures, a putting green, a whimsical folly made of wood from the property, and an enticing pool. Stroll through a stand of birches to a woodland trail that meanders amidst specimen trees, shrubs, and shade-loving perennials.
The Sumacs' gardens surround a stately home designed by Ehrick Rossiter and built in 1894. During Rossiter's career in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, he created or restored a number of historically and architecturally significant buildings in Litchfield County. Those include his own home, known as “The Rocks,” and the well-known Mayflower Inn.
I had the pleasure of meeting one of the stewards of the estate's garden, Georgia Thayer, who is part of the team that cares for this incredible property. We had a lovely conversation about the array of impressive specimen trees, including many evergreens with distinctive structure and foliage. The layers and patterns on display are really exquisite, and it was a joy to behold them!
The #GardenConservancy Open Days program is the only nationwide garden visiting program. The organization is a nationwide community of gardeners and garden enthusiasts teaching and inspiring each other and the public. From expert to novice, there is no better way to improve as a gardener than by experiencing a diverse range of gardens, and gardening traditions, firsthand. It's an incredible privilege and treat to be able to visit so many stunning private gardens and learn from masters!
