I have a large pond (lake?) by my house which has a similar story, but worse. It was so bad that the crappie were literally floating along the bank. The problem was that most of the garbage had either sunken or gotten shredded into small pieces by the storms that we get. The worst part is that there are a ton of turtles in there. Sliders, softshells, snappers, mud turtles, etc. Every spring you would see the bright green slider babies up on a log basking, and it would just be surrounded by trash. I once found a turtle that had completely swallowed a fishing hook. I'm pretty sure that the pond is beyond saving, but there are still a lot of turtles, snakes, and fish in there.
