Saving our iGeneration Kids from Nature Deficit Disorder | Ricardo Sierra | TEDxOneonta

The lessons found in nature and wilderness skills reach children and teens in a powerful, almost visceral way that lays the foundation for growth in their leadership, creativity, intimacy, problem-solving, team building and more. These skills and experiences last a lifetime and help counteract the screen addiction and stress inducing 'curated social world' that is part of the struggle we have in raising healthy children. I believe grandparents are the key to establishing these gifts in our youngest generation. Ricardo founded the Hawk Circle Wilderness Education Summer Camp Program in 1989, then formed the nonprofit Earth Mentoring Institute in 1999, to give children and teens the benefits of a deep connection to nature. His work has included professional trainings and program development for the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council of Delaware County, the Creating Rural Opportunities Partnership After School Program, the Chatt Hill Charter School, Madrone Audubon Society, Waldorf School of Baltimore, The Berkshire Mountain Search and Rescue and many others.
His wilderness skills training and youth mentoring experience has included The Tom Brown Jr Tracking and Wilderness Survival School, John Stokes Tracking Project, The California Conservation Corps, Backcountry Trails and American Red Cross. He also has spent extensive time in wilderness and natural areas across the country, where he put the skills he teaches to the test. He lives in Cherry Valley, NY. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Perfect, nature is where we are supposed to be. Anything outside of it is irregular and we see those effects. Do not forget your true home! Mother Earth.

My son will be attending your camp this August. And has a goal set to help pay the tuition for another child next year. We are very excited.

Great talk, Ricardo!! I totally agree with your observations! I agree that my kids development and growth to adulthood is at stake here. I believe that my own is too. I plan on , will get myself and my kids outside more. Thanks for the reminder.

Just watched your Ted talk. Your Presentation had me back in the Woods w/ my past/Students. I loved how your experiences were relatable to my own. It refreshes my purpose. The "Why" I teach this "Woods Stuff". Reminded me of my Curriculum Vitae, "Adapt & Overcome" on Outdoor Education I'd written 11 years ago. Basically, Ricardo, you renewed my Spirit. Thank you, Sir.

What an excellent job you did on this subject. I found it so helpful. You not only identified the problem and put it in context with your heart warming story but also offered a simple solution we could all take part in. Thank you so much for sharing.

Your understanding of kids and the skills that you teach are wonderful, along with how you are now reaching out to the world of people who will watch this Ted Talk and hear your words. Thank you for all that you do to make this world a better place, by creating connections between children and nature. We need more people like you, who are doing what they love and sharing it so that others will do the same, and carry it with them forever.

What if this is the natural order of our species evolution?

If you saw the intense mental anguish and pain that some kids and teenagers live with on a daily basis, that is so uncomfortable that they will hurt themselves to try to make that pain go away, then you'd probably not think it's part of our 'natural order'. Just saying.

It's hard to go from 100,000 years of nature connection, close family bonding and having lots of personal skills, to 9 hours a day reading other people's tweets and comments. It's not possible to adapt to that much change, that quickly, in my personal opinion, without significant sacrifice in our well being. And this is being demonstrated every day by headlines across the globe...

Our species? Why does TEDX always insist on lower the human being to an animal? Every single video on almost every topic imaginable. Really tired of it to be honest.

That's up there with one of the strangest comments I've ever seen about a serious topic on KZread? What a strange sentiment. We are animals. No one is ashamed of it, be absolutely bizarre if they were. Your tired of Tedx Talks casually referring to us as exactly what we are. . .Yeah it gets to me too, keeps me up at night !??
