Saving our children from nature deficit disorder | Becci Curry | TEDxEustis

In a world inundated with technology, a child's connection to the natural world is being reduced. Educator Becci Curry outlines ways to balance "screen time" with "green time" and restore students' understanding of nature and how the natural world shapes the rest of our lives. Becci is a teacher, librarian and naturalist in Camden County, Georgia for over 30 years. She learned to explore her natural surroundings at a very young age, at the heels of her father. As a single dad and avid outdoorsman, he encouraged her to use all five of her senses to discover the natural world that surrounded them. Becci continues this method of connecting to her environment and just naturally encourages her students to do the same. Becci has been twice selected as the St. Marys Elementary Teacher of the Year and Camden County Teacher of the Year. She was voted one of the top 5 teachers in the state of Georgia, the Elementary Science Teacher of the Year, and the Marine Science Educator of the Year. As a devoted mother of two, and grandmother (Gigi) of seven, Becci continues to ensure that the children she loves do not suffer from "Nature Deficit Disorder". This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

My son almost got diagnosed with autism because of excessive screen time. Thank goodness we found a video talking about autism and screen time and we stopped all screen time and increased social interaction and took him out every day and in few months our child completely changed and became a normal 3 year old. Save your children’s brains from the effects of screens.

I love I was able to find this topic in regards to learning efficiently , being that I speak 2 languages it’s challenging for me I had to be in my phone hours on end in order to understand better, we are now starting on birds and animals flowers ,rocks, water collecting as they have fossils. I’m so excited and look forwards the next chapter. Thank you so much for your support and for allowing my student skills to continue to improve.
