    If your starting out with root pruning, just take little bit off at a time and see how the plant reacts to the root prune. It is true that pruning your roots will promote new and stronger growth, it is done in bonsai for that point. It also is used for ramification, which is one root divides into two, and two to four and so on. good luck with your plants.

    Sovereign Prax is correct. It's a common practice to prune roots in the bonsai world. I have read many times that you can actually remove up to 2/3 of the root ball. However, I have never removed that much and I probably never will, nor would I suggest it. But pruning away around 1/4 to 1/3 of the roots, especially on something like a Pothos will be safe.

    I have never pruned roots of my plants have done fine I'm 70 years old. I would think if you were trimming your roots though you may want to make sure your shears are sterilized with alcohol before you start cutting anything. If roots are bad or have been Nick or you notice something wrong with them then those roots should be cut off but these plans are so healthy they know what they're doing so I would just leave their Roots alone

    you did a fantastic job with re potting your plat it looks amazing and I was thinking the roots were needing to be was as they were so tight. When I mix soil I do a big amount and store it in a tub with a lid however I let it breath in the box by leaving the lid not completely on. I find it does not get mold or any other problem with it, and also by doing so the soil can flow around the roots very well. I just water very well after re potting. You did such a great job with the re potting and for trying doing your own soil. Fantastic content and keep up the great work, look forward to the next video. how are the IKEA shelves going, and are they up yet?

    Hey there. If you do a lot of repotting it's worth it to make a bunch and pull it out when you need it. I seem to do that especially when the spring is rolling around because I tend to do more repotting them. I use equal parts coco coir and pumice with a splash of cactus potting soil and a bit of worm castings. As you know, I am a Sansevieria lover, so that seems to work very well for my collection. I know I really do need to branch out and get other plants, but I am just a sucker for a snake plant. Lol. Thanks for posting.

  • @kathleenmurphy2379
    @kathleenmurphy23794 жыл бұрын

    Oh dear I thought I was finished making comments and I'm going to make a new one. You are so right about reusing the potting soil. There are certain nutrients and microorganisms that that plan is used to in that potting soil it's like their blankie so by combining that with the new soil you are being scientific and doing a good deed for your plant. Roots grow according to what they're growing in and I know this for my orchids because if I buy an orchid and it's in Moss and I put it in bark or someone buys in orchid in bark and puts it in Moss or puts it in a water culture different routes have to grow for that media so when you completely change the potting soil mix of plants in its roots have to grow or has to grow new ones that acclimate to that new environment that New Media. So you are scientifically correct. People buy new plants change the soil put it in a new pot and all the sudden they wonder why it's just sitting there in that pot what's sitting there trying to grow new roots to acclimate to the new environment you just did for that poor little plant so good job sweetie! I'm 70 years old and I've been working with plants on my life reading tons of books and subscribing to many many magazines about gardening through those years. Back one time a physical science class I took it was a gradual class the professor was impressed with my knowledge and wondered how I knew so much about plants and soil structure excetera. But I don't know everything and I learn something new everyday

    I'm glad you kept commenting! You were able to confirm this for me haha. Now I can say it's because of their microorganisms & nutrients! Easier for them to acclimate. I appreciate that you share your knowledge

    i like to mix the soil too. i'm a bit of a nerd and researching what are plants' needs is fun. and premade potting mix need adjustments anyway. you definitely can make a big batch of soil mix and store it. it will dry out, but that's the only thing i noticed about it. if i remember correctly, vermiculite is quite water retaining. check it out, it is a common component of soil mix for seedlings.

  • @ErikaLodes

    @ErikaLodes

    Is it okay if it dries out? It can just be watered after potting the plant right I've been thinking about buying vermiculite, but I have a full bag of peat moss & 3 blocks of coco coir left 😅I'll look into it for when I run out because I do want to make a big batch of soil

    @@ErikaLodes i don't know, tbh. i mist it before use just because i don't like to work wirh dry soil. actually, in case of seedlings, i think vermiculite is added to peat moss also to make soil mix lighter. it doesn't add as much aeration as perlite obviously. also there's a thing with ph of soil. inorganic components can be a part of adjustments, bc different plants need different ph.

    Also one of the things that happens when a pot gets really dry is the soil pulls away from the pot especially it seems like in hanging baskets and then it needs to soak in something so the soil can swell back up and touch the sides of the pot. Sometimes it's not that it's rootbound and I've just started watching your videos so I don't know what's up inside your pot but I do know my hanging baskets if I let them dry out too much the water just runs right through the pot down the sides and nothing really gets watered unless I soak it in a bucket so I try not to let my hanging baskets get too terribly dry cuz I don't like soaking

    Another hint from Lifetime experience make sure you water well a plant before you transplanted because it needs to have perfect roots in perfect condition to absorb the water before the reporting because after the repotting there is damage to the roots from just touching them and they won't be able to take up the water that the plant needs because it wasn't watered first. Plants survive but if you want the best potting situation make sure you water your plant first. And if your plan is soaking wet because you're overwatered then it is a good idea to try to transplant that plant and take off some of the soil and add new so you can get the new soil to suck up all that excess moisture. Hopefully all this makes sense and you're not upset or insulted with me adding these comments. And what a great idea that was taking the plant outside and using the hose I made the first part of this comment before I watched after use the hose. Using the hose like you did is an excellent way to keep the roots from being damaged a lot with the transplanting. You are very good plant mom your plans are all healthy and that Cebu blue how did you get those leaves so big they're huge compared to the one that I have of course my more cuttings that came in the mail but the leaves are lucky to be like an inch long and yours look like they're twice as big at least. I'm going to wait till next spring but I wonder what's going to happen when I go to repot my begonia Vine or cissus Vine that I just did a video on. It's 14 feet long if not longer. It's called a begonia Vine because it resembles a Rex begonia leaf. I've never had one before and I just can't believe how big it got by the way watch out for my giveaway for getting a hundred subscribers I got to hurry up and get it done because it is getting cooler and I don't want it to go somewhere where it's going to get cold in the mail. It's going to be an alocasia Golden Shield oops I think it's regal Shield and colocasia call Blue Hawaii. And a couple surprise cuttings or plantlets rooted cuttings giveaway.

    You need to buy something at Lowe's called soil moist. They are polymer crystals that absorb 50 times their weight in water. They keep water and reserved for a plant and don't make the soil soggy. In fact I think if you're in over water it sucks up the extra moisture so that the soil is in soggy and if you're an underwater it keeps some water and suspension so that the plant doesn't droop if you forget to water it or can't for a day or two. I add it to all my potting soil mixes no matter what kind of plant. It costs about $16 but it will do 50 hanging baskets! It only comes in that one size . At Lowe's you'll find it where the Miracle Grow fertilizer is kept and all those other extra ingredients you can use in your potting mix. Your plants will absolutely love it. I grow a lot of coleus from cuttings and they transfer from water roots to soil Roots very easily when that is in the potting mix. In the fall after the Frost gets the ones that I can't take in the house and I pull the dead plants out of the ground are out of the pots I have them planted in The Roots have found those little crystals and have actually grown through them. They last in the soil for five years according to the company after I've written to them. Also I recycle my potting soil and mix some old with some new because you don't throw away your garden soil outside your house or in your vegetable garden so I throw away the potting soil that's in the pot with the plants we always fertilize so that's the reason why you would repot a plant because to get more fertile soil. Anyhow if I've reuse potting soil that had that in its hysterical after a rain it looks like I'm growing clear chunks of Jell-O in my flower pot. It doesn't hurt the plant that's why it's hard to over water a plant with that in the soil mix. So I'll just scoop up some of those little Jello chunks and put them in another pot. It's the greatest invention to help gardeners indoor gardeners and outdoor

    In any mix you are making, I would not go any higher than 50% coir. If you are not using potting soil, you can use 1/4 worm castings. I have even done mixes of equal parts castings. coir. perlite. potting soil. and bark mix. The castings are an addition that won't burn your plants like fertilizer does. Experimenting with the mixes is kinda fun. You can store your mixes in a locking lid type plastic tub. I do it all the time. Just use the lock down type lid to keep dampness or pests from getting in. Thank you for addressing the peat issue. We ALL need to start sending a message with our purchasing habits to say to the soil making companies that we no longer find peat an acceptable additive.

    i have a dumb ? if you wanted to would it be ok to cut those roots back in half to make it live in the smaller pot if you wanted to or would that kill the plant?

  • @kathleenmurphy2379

    @kathleenmurphy2379

    4 жыл бұрын

    The better idea would be to divide the plant in half and put half of it back in the hanging basket and half of it in another smaller pot. If you trim the roots in half you will lose a lot of the leaves because those roots are supporting the leaves. That's why I would never prune roots so don't prune The Roots just divide the plant and 1/2 are in threes 4/3 I guess I should say. I had a root bound pink syngonium and I did want to put it in bigger pot because of space I have room for more smaller pots but not larger pots. So I just broke the plant in 1/2 and it's as happy as can be being twins now

    It seems like you're just a little bit of this and a little bit of that like my grandmother said she baked her bread no measurements haha just teasing you sweetheart. Also when you work with perlite you have to be careful because you can breathe in that fine powder that's in with it and the same with coco coir or peat moss be careful you're not breathing in well you pour that stuff or wear a mask your lungs are important I'm too many older people find out that they've done too many things to their lungs and can't live the life they could have lived if they had been careful. There is a lady that I watch that has her own nursery and grows all her own succulents and desert roses and other plants and Punta Gorda Florida. Our KZread channel is Maria's Garden. She has many different potting soil mixes that she uses and she grows all her own succulents and desert roses from seeds or from little tiny plants that are grafted from Thailand. She is very funny very knowledgeable and she absolutely loves her plants

    Couple of things. Peat moss is from peat bogs BUT Its totally renewable and sustainable! This lie started while back that because peat is slow to grow we are taking more then is being replaced but the truth is that that only is true for certain areas. If you buy peat moss, or sphagnum moss from Canada then you are buying a product that is perfectly sustainable and renewable. Canada has HUGE peat bogs everywhere and the amount they harvest every year is easily replaced by the bogs there because there is so much of it. In fact even with all the peat being harvested every year they only take about 28% of the peat from Canada and in a single year the remain peat produces 70% more peat then has been taken. Coco Coir is produced in very poor countries, they use a ton of water to produce it and the workers there are paid almost nothing and work in horrendous conditions. Add to that the amount of fuel it takes to ship that coco coir around the world a lot of carbon is being produced. Now the argument for carbon exists for bogs as well because when they harvest the peat a lot of carbon is released back into the environment. So both have positives and negatives but I only use peat moss. The last thing is I dont think you have a Cebu Blue. That looks like a regular Epipremnum pinnatum or maybe an e. pinnatum blue. Is is not a Cebu blue. A lot of places miss label the plant or sell hybrids but a Cebu blue has a lot more blue colour in the leaves. Yours is very green.
