Saved a common swift - Mauersegler gerettet (Apus apus)

The swift (Apus apus) was very weak when handed over to Wildtierhilfe-MV. The people who found it could not help the bird themselves. It refused any food and did not want to eat. I had to introduce mealworms with gentle force into its throat. At first, I fed it every 30 minutes, but later in the evening only once per hour. You could really see how the food has raised its spirits again. In the evening, it was full of energy and wanted to escape from a tiny hole in its box. But I could not let it out. I know that swifts also fly at night. But it should not start at night and be smashed on the next window. I therefore waited until shortly before sunrise and then let the bird fly away.

It was a need for me to help the little bird. It was so hungry and did not want to eat. I had to help and open it's beak. But after a few meals it was active again and wanted to fly away. It was a pleasure for me to see how it spreaded the wings. Thank you dear Joan! Greetings Manfred

@@mbhsug this week i actually found one in a really busy street where i live. They are actually very kind and thankful birds. I found during night and he was really tired, unable to fly. I bring for some hours to my flat and gave him water. He drank a lot. After some hours, at 6.00 am. i woke up, petted his head and he started singing. I decided that was a good time to release him, once was not that hot and the street was not that busy/noisy.

Very nice! Just one thing, it's usually better to only hold these babies on your palm and raise your palm as much as possible and wait for the swift to fly away on its own. They fly through a diving motion when they're ready since they can't take flight on flat surfaces due to their legs being too short, so they need the altitude to dive down and then fly away.

♥♥♥Ma

Hey manfred, Yesterday I found this bird injured in my backyard, I kept him safe for about a day and he is better now. But when I take him to an open area he looks happy, he opens his mouth and flap his wings but couldn't fly. Maybe he didn't learned it yet. But he keeps his wings open when he is on the ground same as a moth. Is it normal? Also please don't forget to give some useful tips and precautions, it would be highly appreciated.

Ganz tolles Video!

Man we have a bunch these where I live (along with swallows) as it's a tall building right next to an open park area and they nest under our roofs. Found one of these little guys on my balcony the other day (hence why I'm here. Dk why he was there; guessing he had possibly smashed into a window) and didn't quite know what to do; it has never happened before (found a dead swallow there once but that was prior to new glassed balconies). Thought he was dead until I saw him blinking. Was choosing between breaking his neck/ending him quickly (because the way he was forced up against the wall I thought he was real hurt), leaving him be to get his bearings and maybe he would fly on his own or just picking him up and throw him in the air like in this video. After he had laid there for a good while I decided to throw him and if he flew great and if not hopefully he would die on impact (three stories up). Well the little guy flew immediately without looking to have serious issues. Thought it was cool how trusting he seemed to be. Super calm when picking him up (like he knew I didn't want to kill him), was sitting and holding onto my hand very gently until I figured it was go-time and luckily the throw had a happy ending. Kinda wish I took a picture now. Cool video.

A swift eat only insects. They catch the insects in flight. On the ground they never eat. For this reason, your bird does not accept your food. You have to open the beak with tender violence and stuff the insects inside. Do not give him any water, the liquid in the insects is sufficient. It is not easy. You need a lot of patience and I think it would be even better if you contact an expert tomorrow. To save a swift is not an easy task.

Today (2022 4th July, monday 10:13 am) a common swift bird flew into our house from the window (which is really surprising because we live on the 6th floor) anyways so my little sister was the only one there awake in that room at that time, and our cat tried taking it under the bed? So she started to cry and panic and woke my mom up. That’s when me and my other sister woke up and went into the room, we found out that there’s a bird in the room so my mom told me to pick it up. She gave me a small towel then I picked it up but that’s not the point. We basically started freaking out on what to do with it because we thought it couldn’t fly since when I picked it up it didn’t fly away, but we went into the bathroom and locked the door (we have 4 cats) so basically it kept opening its mouth like it is in the video, can someone tell me why it does that? But basically it started blinking and closing its eyes slowly and I thought it was gonna die but it turns out it’s just because of exhaustion. But anyway we went into a different room (closed door) and we put it on the bed and realized it could still fly so my mom opened the window and then put the bird near the window and there it went “🕊💨” anyways yes. It’s alive right now and is flying. Thank you for saving the bird btw

Toll. Hier sind sie aber schon um den 3. August herum abgeflogen.

I know! These birds spit out any food. You have to open the beak with gentle force and put the food deep into the neck. As deep as you can. Then it stays in there. It is not easy! If you take normal tweezers you can hurt the bird very much. Therefore, you should first grind the tweezers with sandpaper so that it has no sharp edges.

Unfortunately, I am not a veterinarian. That's why I can not give you a remote diagnosis for your bird. If it's sick, you can only go to the vet.

Wichtig fürs nächstes mal (was hoffentlich nicht vorkommt).

If you ever find this bird you NEED to let her fly! Find a high place and throw her in the air. They most likely won't survive on the ground
