I interned at a rehab center last summer and fell head over heels for these tiny but loud as all get out babies. Thanks for uploading this, because now I can remember them through this

I'm a rehaber and my favorites are baby red bellied woodpeckers but now these are a close second. I have a chimney swift and he is the sweetest thing. He loves to be held! 😍

They have nested in our chimney,summers for maybe 10 years They left about 10 September and now first of May. They have not returned yet this year and I am waiting. The young really make a racket. I enjoy hearing them setting in my family room near our fireplace.

THEYRE SO CUTE

My chimney has been host to families of these little cuties for 24 yrs now . I made the mistake of installing a spark arresting cap one year and had to go up and cut an access hole at 10 pm because they were throwing an absolute fit .

Reading about swifts on wiki and elsewhere, they only come down to earth to nest, otherwise staying aloft full time. The fact they don't come down to earth supposedly gives them weak feet, but if so then why are they able to hang on to a wall (by their feet) for such long periods of time.

Their feet are designed to support them clinging to a surface. That is how they rest. They do all their eating while flying

I found a baby swift on the road above a huge really tall tree we couldn’t get it back into the tree so we naught it home and we are not sure what to do it is still alive we have made a nest and it has fed once what should we do

Are they orphan swifts or it's just extra feeding for them?

I am currently on day 9 of caring for 2 babies that fell into my fireplace after their nest broke into 2 pieces...they are feeding well and hqve now grown all of their feathers and are beginning to open their eyes...can you advise me on how to prepare them to be released? Is it possible to release them when they will be ready about Sept 1...the problem is I don't see any swifts flying around anymore and so that concerns me

Do you have any wildlife rehabbers near you? They need to be released at a roost location into a group of swifts. Depending on where you are, they could be leaving very soon depending on the weather. Again, best thing to do is try to get them to an experienced rehabber.

Did you find them that old? Because whenever I find them they are hatchlings.Their nest usually falls down my chimney and the mother never comes back...

@@gardini100 Thanks for replying, i did keep it for 2 days...feeded him with sugar water as it wasn't eating anything...searched a lot for insect food but i could only find blood worms at the local vet shop which they said cannot be given to baby swift...later i handed over to the bird rescue team...hope he is alright

Hatchling like you're talking about get brought in to a rehabilitation facility after people find them in their living room.

We think we have them in our chimney now. The sound we hear though is more like a rattlesnake! We live in Maryland.

We live in NC and they nest in our chimney all the time. Only thing is sometimes the fledglings fall into the house. We it them in a yogurt container on a broom stick and put them back in the chimney and the parents will keep looking after them

I'm in North Carolina as well and I just had to nestlings fall down into my fireplace 2 days ago and I cannot seem to get them to STAY up in the chimney when I put them up there by hand (like a rehabilitator directed me to do). They will grip on to the brick wall of the chimney while they're up there no problem, but then they fall right back down in just a matter of time. It's now been 2 days and I still can't get the babies to stay up IN the chimney. It doesn't seem like the mother has been coming down to feed them while in my fireplace either. Poor babies!☹️ I would greatly appreciate if you can explain how you got the yogurt container to stay on the broomstick?😁👍

@@angelamendoza590 I just used duct tape to hold it to the end of the broom stick. Some times I use a milk jug and cut it out and stick it up in they are bigger. I live in a older house and the chemmy opening is really big so it is easy to stick them up in there. Sometimes they still fall in but I just stick them back up in there. Sometimes I have to do it a couple times a week but most of the time they are near being able to fly on their own when they are getting that big

How did u get a dozen babies? This is several nest? All the parents abandoned them? Are u a resue place?

Yes they are at a rehabilitation facility and come to us a few at a time as citizens find them, usually after they fall down the chimney into the house.

HELP...!...Found swift baby chicks on the floor. The local cats had disturbed the nest and the mother rejects them...very small...I have them in a box keeping them warm. But what can I feed them with syringe and if they survive what else? thankyou

I know that 11 days have gone by since you left your comment, that I thought that I would give it a shot anyway with some advice in hopes that it'll reach you in time, or rather that you won't need my advice cuz hopefully you've already acquired the correct information from somebody knowledgeable by now. But, when you find a baby chimney swift that has fallen into your fireplace from the chimney then you would be advised to lift the bird is far up into the chimney as you can reach to where there is rougher feeling brick and allow the baby to climb onto the wall and attach itself. Then you will need to close your damper on your fireplace or cut out some cardboard 2 block the babies from falling back down into the actual fireplace again. The babies will literally crawl up the walls all the way back up to where they're supposed to be with the other babies if the babies keep falling down into your fireplace somehow though and you cannot get them to climb back up into the fireplace on their own like I have had happen then just make sure that your fireplace is cleaned out and allow the babies to stay in your fireplace and hopefully the mother will come down and feed it while inside of your fireplace. On the other hand, if the mother does not seem to be coming down and feeding the baby while it's in your fireplace then you can absolutely take it upon yourself to feed the babies in the meantime. If they are NOT fully feathered fledglings yet, then you can smash up some of a hard-boiled egg and finely ground organic oatmeal with a very slight bit of water (just barely enough water to make it into a bit of a runny paste thats like applesauce consistency.... AND BY THE WAY, PLEASE BE SURE TO NOT TO EVER GIVE A BABY BIRD WATER ALONE, BCUZ IT WILL KILL IT) and then feed the babies little bitty scoops of this runny paste and you can use something like tweezers or even a toothpick that is dulled down on the sharp point. Of they have FULL feathers then they're a fledgling and should he left where it was found as the parents are always near by their fledgling. But after observing for a few hours, it seems that the fledglings parents are NOT taking care of it (if it's obvioulsy hungry over hours on end, then the parents might've been killed by a predator and I would say to feed it. You can find FLYING bugs outside and feed the baby that, OR you can go buy some wax worms at your local pet store and feed them those as meals, but DO NOT feed them mealworms as they have a very hard exoskeleton that is hard to digest. And again, call a local wildlife rehabilitate ASAP👍 If you do have them inside of your house to feed them though, please be sure to keep them warm as they not only have higher body temperature than humans do but they also reside inside of hot chimneys during the summer months of the year. Too much of a temperature change can cause organ failure! If you honestly do not think that the mother has been coming back and taking care of the baby while in your fireplace though, and you cannot get them to climb up the chimney back to where they belong, then please call a local wildlife rehabilitator that specializes in Birds. I truly hope that this information isn't too late, although I have a feeling it is, but at least you now will have the information that I have gained and hopefully it will help you either in the future or help somebody else that reads this as there's not much information on what to do with baby chimney Swifts that have fallen from their nests. @@vjltrtle I love these birds and have been wondering where they nest. Just around 10 days ago I noticed that they are in my neighbor's chimney. I've been recording them going down every day. Also have footage of a few that got caught out during a windy rain period. I'm concerned about them (about 20 go into my neighbors chimney) so I'm filming while trying to keep their secret safe. I wouldn't mind if they used my three available chimneys.

I saw some photos on Flickr that some chimney swifts perch on a branch of a tree, but they said chimney swifts can't perch on a tree. I am confused. Some experts can tell me what is this all about. Thanks.

I am interested in using this footage for a project. Are you open to licensing?

I just saved 2 surviving baby chimney Swifts whos nest fell all the way down to the water boiler 😥 had to rip the exhaust flue off to rescue them. Poor babies.

You can't buy one it's illegal in my state they don't allow people buying these types of birds and plus they are declining you can't have one for a pet you could go to jail for keeping something like that as a pet
