"Save Zoka forest" - William Amanzuru on the Hard Questions

Join us as we explore the urgent issue of deforestation in Zoka Forest, Adjumani District. Despite President Yoweri Museveni's directive to halt charcoal trade and tree cutting in Northern Uganda, the illegal activity persists.
We speak with William Leslie Amanzuru, Team Leader at Friends of Zoka, about the efforts to protect this vital tropical rainforest. With over 70 trailers of charcoal leaving the district weekly, the depletion of Zoka Forest's 7,000 hectares is alarming.
Watch as we deep dive into the story of local resistance, security checks, and the fight to preserve our natural resources.

The level of impunity and destruction may not be about to stop. I remember in the year 2019, I under our umbrella of Walkers Association of Uganda together with Friends of Zoka, sponsored by Ministry of Water and Environment, walked from Kampala to Adjumani to raise the plight of the forest. But seems the destruction is worsening. Where will Zoka ehist in the next 20 years?

I believe one of the ways of combating this issue is to create/encourage other alternative and sustainable sources of livelihood. It’s difficult or close to impossible to convince people to surrender charcoal burning when it’s the only means they know can feed them/earn them some money, unless of course we use the other alternative which is Force (but how long can we sustain forceful means) and at what cost. Let me know what you think.

Unfortunately it's not the people around who deplete it but from other regions. How sad?
