I use a 4” Diamond disk from harbor freight mounted on a dedicated angle grinder clamped in a small table vise. You can use the edge to cut your tungsten and the flat side to sharpen. Perfect grind every time

I taught myself this when I first started out, seemed like a common sense simple method. The second step in running it over that stripping disc is something I'll have to try though. Good video, as always.

i have NEVER snapped, smashed or cave-maned my tungsten, 100% of the time, grinder 120 flat disk, even if i had a HUGE GLOB on the end, just bring it back. If its for aluminum, i keep those a bit more like you have done.

I've been tig welding for 21 years I've never heard of anybody hitting the tungsten with a hammer. That's a great way to fracture the the tungsten and create micro fractures that you can't easily see but will deposit impurities into your weld.

Never ever ever smack, cut with pliers or break the tip of the tungsten to get "fresh" tip... cut or grind it.

Wow hitting a tungsten with a hammer is brutal, i bought the cheapest bench grinder i could and swapped out the course wheel for a fine diamond cup wheel.. i use the fine aluminium oxide wheel for rough grinding and polish the tungsten on the diamond wheel.. with a nice polished point it makes a really nice stable arc at low amps

I have never smashed or snapped an electrode, always cut it if needed as when you snap you can get small longitudinal fractures up the length of it and arc instability and at super low amperage starts, funky arc initiation. If I have needed to fully start over, a diamond wheel cut off as on my electrode grinder works great as it has a spot just for cutting. In the ship if I don't feel like using dedicated electrode grinder, I'll use a dedicated belt grinder with two grits and sharpen longitudinally while rotating. Works a treat.

As far as aluminum goes, our piranha tungsten grinder doesn't go up to an 1/8" tungsten so I go over to the bench grinder with a diamond disc and just taper the tungsten almost to a point and then I'll go back and just barely hit the tip to flatten it. That's always been my go to

I have never heard of smashing your tungsten with a hammer. Seeing that hurts my soul. I don't weld enough these days so my skills are not great. I have 3-4 pieces of tungsten to cycle through before hitting the grinder to sharpen all of them. I have a coarse grinding wheel on my bench grinder to get the dipping contamination out then switch to a diamond wheel to give a perfect finish similar to the scotchbrite. This may be inappropriate, but there is a joke in the preferring a small ball comment. Sorry, I couldn't help it.

Nearly all of the tig work I do is thoriated tungstens. So im not sure about the hammer trick. They split and crack way to easy for that. But im curious if anybody has any great ideas.

I can’t say i have done a lot of TIG welding in the last 54 years of my fabrication career, but i have never heard of breaking off the end of the tungsten with anything. I have always re-ground the tips and have a little 1/4 hp bench grinder that is only for tungsten grinding. Most unusual. I think the fly beat you on points.
