It’s a good idea to date every box or batch. That way can cycle thru it. Vacuum sealed bags with silica to help wick out moisture, and place in rubber sealed lids in military steel ammo cans… don’t get better than that! Also climate controlled storage.

President Obama never said this. This is a scare tactic to get you to vote republican. The only gun legislation Obama signed actually expanded gun rights. Obama signed legislation in February 2010 to allow guns to be carried into national parks. This was banned under Regan. Obama's also signed a law in November 2010 that eliminated a rule that you could not transport guns on Amtrak. This was a rule put into effect under George W. Bush after 9/11.

Joke is on him, ever tried out a high end pcp airgun yet? Surprisingly effective and a few dirt cheap lead ingots and a mold and no worry about ammo. I’m talking 1.5 inch groups at 100 yards and enough energy to expand the soft lead slugs. People regularly take deer with them, it’s not a firearm, but could be close enough. The caliber they call 457 is 45 cal with almost 400 ft lbs of energy at the muzzle, some rifles produce up to 15 consistent shots on a single air charge.

I was in need of 12ga, and had about $600 to spend. I could've bought almost 1,000 rounds of 00buckshot. But I decided to invest the money into reloading supplies and make my own custom shells as a stockpiling method. For that same $600 I now have a reloading press, close to ten-thousand various wads, 5 thousand hulls (some new, some once fired), 3 pounds of Longshot, 3 thousand primers, 22lbs of #4buck, a slug mold, a #1buck mold, and 75 pounds of lead. Obviously its MUCH easier to just buy the factory ammo and move on with life, but I've found it to be relaxing. I can also make a high power 3" magnum 41pellet #4buck for around $0.45-$0.50 depending on which wad variation I use. And that's if I include the price of the hull, which can be reused 5-6 times. This also gave me the option to load my own custom 2inch full power shells. I can now get more capacity since the shells are smaller, but its still a full power 16pellet #1buck load. Sorry for rambling. God Bless.

Then became CCW and built a must have minimum amount-on hand- for range training/self defense. As prices fluctuate I stock up. Oh, I "inherited " an obscene amount of 22LR from the 1940's.

They’d start saying I’ve got this and that and this and that, and they’d have to have 30-40 different calibers laying around. I guess it’s fun for some folks, but not us preppers. Just get the basic arms you need, and stock for those.

I also have an MTM Case-Gard five can ammo crate that I keep stocked for the SHTF or in the event my family needs to leave quickly. The cans are 30 caliber size and all ammo is loose inside. (1) 600 rounds of 9mm (wife's Glock 19) (2) 400 rounds of 45acp (my Glock 21) (3) 1,600 rounds of 22 LR (2 kids Ruger 10/22 and Taurus TX22 ) (4) 85 rounds of 12 gauge (5) 300 rounds of 5.56 . That together with the ammo that's loaded in magazines already, is all we would be taking if we had to get out fast.

One consideration is the permanent inflation environment we live in. I reload all my calibers so I’m a different animal for storage/stockpiling. It is a rare occurrence that I buy factory ammunition but for those that do stockpiles make sense if you store your ammunition properly and strive for consistency with manufacturer and bullet weight. Having 1000 rds of 308 from 6 manufacturers with 4 different bullets (weight and type) is foolish. Years ago I had an opportunity to buy a 1000 rds Federal 150g Power Shok for $16.99 a box with free shipping. I’ll only use it for deer hunting and $800 felt really extravagant at the time but now the best price I can find is $1.35 + a rd. Whatever the rifle caliber you have, if you see a bargain on the stuff your rifle likes buy 10 boxes vs 2. You’ll be glad you did.

I have always been a low budget prep guy. Starting in the late 80s, I would buy a couple boxes of ammo in different calibers on Fridays after work on the way home. I retired for good back in 2015. I have an overabundance of some calibers. I reload for all of my hunting rifles. I have all the required supplies to maintain those for the rest of my life. I train often with 9mm, 5.56, 12ga. Those three, I have focused on for the last few years. That means I buy ammo at two boxes for every one box used. However, I recently started ordering ammo online at 1000 per caliber. A few more orders and I am done and then going back to a couple of boxes a week.

Same with shotgun shell I don’t stock as many more like 500 rounds but I break it up 250 rounds of buck/slug the other half is different bird shots low brass Walmart special upto 3inch Turkey loads. And I do the rotating for all of it I shoot some I replace it right away and I’ll shoot the older stuff first. Unless it’s some kinda special round.

I agree on secondary firearms that are not shot as often you will need less . Semi - Auto magazine fed rifles that are slated for defense I would say 1,000 as bare minimum 2-4 thousand better. Handguns will need 1,500-2,000 of ball for training in 9mm (because it is cheaper to train with) and 1,000 for 40 and 45. Hollow points will need at least 500 per caliber in handgun.

Not everyone can afford to stockpile in the thousands. Though I own a number of guns, I try to concentrate on having at least a few hundred rounds for three calibers that I consider the most important. That being 22wmr for my favorite hunting rife, 9mm for my home defense gun and 380acp for my personal defense gun. However since I like to train with all three, it goes up and down a lot.

Please make sure you store your equipment properly. I usually did. But we had new carpet put in and lots of stuff was moved around for the time of being. And of course we had a major flood that hasn't happened in this aera in over 30 years. I'm at the top of a hill so I didn't think it would get me. Just too much rain too fast/All at once. Just be careful. A pipe bursting, Condensation /dripping pipe, humidity or even a flood. If you've spent a lot or care about your equipment, just be careful.

Stockpiling is fine if you're planning on staying in one place or a centralized location, but if you have to move and don't return to the same place, it's only going to be what you can carry comfortably and available storage in your mode of transportation.

You’re looking at the deer hunting rifle incorrectly. In a WROL scenario that’s your long distance hole puncher. 😉 Even the Corps says the 5.56 is only good for 500 meters so you may want/need something with a little longer range.

One of my Hunting rifles is a SAKO Custom Deluxe Left-handed 375 H&H Mag ... friend keeps telling me I should have at least 1000 rounds for it also. I informed him that at current prices you are looking at that much costing with tax close to 6k and that I was fine with my base of 200 rounds put back and a few for just running a few rounds through it now and then ... he kept on > I said lets go to the range ... I laid out 30rounds and said if you cant shoot all of those in 3 mins I give you $100 > after 5 rounds in under a minute he said ya > 200 or so is enough

Multiple weapons in the same caliber would require more inventory. Also i stock less ammo for my bolt guns/revolvers than semi autos. As far as 22 lr, I dont even keep track of how much i have. I just know that I have a bunch. I never turn down more cheap 22 when it becomes available.

Buy as much as your finances will allow you to buy to where you feel comfortable with the amount you have on hand. That might be 500 rounds, it might be 5,000 rounds or more, it is what ever amount you feel comfortable with if ever there was a true shortage or stoppage of ammo. There is no "typical" or set amount no matter what any "expert" tells you. I have two boys and when I'm gone they will get all my Arms and ammo, and will be a lot cheaper now then down the road.

The funniest thing I’ve heard of lately are the places that stockpile it for you and send it to you in some smaller amount on a schedule you set up. Now what happens when everything goes down the drain and they have your ammo locked up somewhere many miles away? I guess the place doing the stockpiling will have plenty.
