With these 8 simple additions to the router table I made in a previous video I have ironed out some of the kinks that I hadn't expected to arise. Each one is a really easy fix with the fence upgrade being the icing on the plywood cake.

Mark, look how far you come in such a short time. Are you sandbagging us? These "tweaks," are brilliant. Keep calm and keep woodworking.

Hi Meat. once again a very kind comment. I am beginning to miss the banter of our very first communication months ago. Maybe I need to include more jargon. In all seriousness, thank you. Definitely no sandbagging I assure you, still making plenty of mistakes, or learning opportunities as I like to see them.

@@startmaking1 Keep up the good work. You remind me of myself as I was a learn by doing kind of guy. I like that you show your work, warts and all. Young folks today need to learn that to triumph, one may need to stumble along the path; but, then one should be willing/able to pick up and drive on. Kipling may have said it better....
I had my makita router for a few years before ever really using it. Always intimidated me an now it’s one of my favourites tools. Wasted so much time sanding uneven round overs and chiselling out dados which ended up too big or small. Such a versatile tool, just very powerful so don’t mess around with it.

I enjoy your videos showing how to improve with marking projects to get experience. Thanks

Fixing mistakes is a must in my shed lol
A very useful & nice-looking project too. I found out years ago that a router in a table is more versatile than a hand-held unit. That was after a couple sessions of just making saw dust with the hand-held. Mark, have fun putting your table to use & finding more & more uses for it. It's more than just changing router bits. Someday I have to buy a trim router & build a table for it. 🙂

Hi Bill. Thank you very much. the definite side bonus is that the top looks much better in black. It is unbelievably versatile, you are so right. Cant believe I didn't need one earlier, or maybe I did and didn't realise it. The only one issue is that now I want a larger router and table too. This one is great but I worry about bigger jobs. for now though it has opened up a world of new builds.
I have been holding back on this build until I found an off cut of kitchen work top in the bargain bin at B&Q

That should do the job nicely. I hope the build goes well.
Perfect timing. Just hitting the gym and I have never owned a router. I never know how to pronounce that word too

Lol. You are my prime audience in that case. the middle of the word rhymes with what you will say when you drop a weight on your toe. If that helps. Enjoy your workout.

New to the Chanel but loving it. What a great table. Very handy, safe and useful! Enjoy the looking outside “woodworking” parts to find useful in our world. Eg the t bit for the dust. I do the same in our big greenhardware shop in australia to find the most useful part.

OMG YES Absolute Fantastic.. Perfection !! haha lol I especially LOVED the Peel and stick vinyl. I bet all the big manufactures will be using that on there tables once they see this :S People, You aren't saving any money building tools out of sCRAP !! Build it right, Build it once. I reckon this will be in the Bin in a few months :/

Thank you for such a lovely comment. Much appreciated
I had the same problem with my built table what I used was some cheap laminate flooring upside down not pretty but it works use the same for the shutters on the fence though i did glue some 5mm ply to it so that it was more stable
@startmaking1
Жыл бұрын
Hi Harti. I think I may end up replacing the shutters with something a little smoother. The top seems to be holding up but I made a bit of a mess of the routing on the shutters and they are bound to bug me enough to need replacing. Laminate flooring is a very smart hack if you ask me. Good thinking.
Posted the chisel holder.

Hi Mark, just subbed and have loved the shed build, can't wait for the next episode. As a cabinet maker in an early life, (I went into aviation in the 80's when work was harder to find.) I love the versatility of routers and have made a few tables in my time. What I was taught on my first day of using them was to feed the material into the cutter in the direction that its rotation pulls the wood toward the guide/fence, that way it will never wander. If you invert the router in a table and look at the cutter you can see that it turns counterclockwise. So the work should be fed right to left. Feed it the wrong way and the rotation trys to push the wood away from the fence. You can obviously use two guides, one one either side, but stick to the basics and you'll work safer, faster and more accurately. It made perfect sense...Once it was explained... Doh!

Hi Gary. You are spot on. I found that out the hard way and still do when I use it hand held. Thank you for coming aboard. And for taking the time to comment. Your experience as a cabinet maker will make for some comments I look forward to learning from.

Hi Mark, I'll certainly help if I can. I am planning on retiring this December and I have dozens of projects that I intend on getting on with. I've always kept my hand in over the years, and I really can't wait. I'm looking forward to seeing the your new workshop up and running too.
Useful video. I haven’t started making my router bench yet so your upgrades will definitely save me some time. I’m fortunate in that I have a whole wet-room shower panel spare from some work we had done and it’s basically 12mm marine ply with a smooth Formica-like surface. Perfect! If I laminate that to another 9 or 12mm ply sheet it should work great for my top and allow me to route out some t-track lines. How easy is the mounting and dis-mounting of the router on that plate? Have you considered buying a separate router base to leave permanently fixed to the underside so you just have the router body to insert/remove?
@startmaking1
10 ай бұрын
Nail on the head. Get a second base, as easy as it is to keep unscrewing 4 screws, it is far easier to just pull the router out. Great idea for you top piece too. I struggled with the depth for the t track and wish it was a few mm deeper to get the screws to bite better. Not caused me ongoing issues but an improver I could change if I made this again.
Looks good. A bit of wax in the surfaces will help the work pieces slide even better. :)

Just a quick one this week. Hope that it helps. Here is the original build video. kzread.info/dash/bejne/h2ee1JqRc82ZpsY.html
Would a fine sanding of the wood top plus light wax w/ good buffing have worked, instead of the vinyl ?
@startmaking1
10 ай бұрын
You know what, I think that it would have. To be honest it worked ok with no extra additions at all, just ply. Not perfect but ok.
Great video and i think i will be making changes to mine. Do you have any idea where you can get small amounts of laminate sheet from in UK?
@startmaking1
Жыл бұрын
Hi Kevin. Thank you. That is a good question. The vinyl that I got was because I could not find anything thicker. I was pushed for time and one option that I wanted to try was to veneer the plywood top. That is another option but in truth once you head down that road it may be easier to grab some off cut melamine from marketplace or eBay and just make another top. The link for the vinyl is in the description and leads you to amazon if you want to try it. Not expensive at all.
Drawers.

Hi. I totally understand what you are saying but I think it is something missing in the edit. I can't remember a time that I have taken the bit out or touched it without first removing the battery. though I dont think that is clear on the video and it does need to be. Thankyou for pointing it out.
should have used melamine for the top
