    This was great! Loved how neat and tucked way it all was. Definitely going to try this on the farm. Thinking this might be a great way to establish trees too, could potentially do a water reservoir/tree support in one!

    HI! Thank you for sharing this method. I tried and would like you to point out what did I do wrong. My 1st pot and 3rd pot was filled with water. But not my middle 2nd pot. I use the same T connector but on a smaller scale. 4mm diameter.

    One caveat. If you are the kind of person that might forget to fill the waterer, then this system is probably not for you. When the clay pots get empty, they will work in reverse and pull moisture from the surrounding area and compete with the plants.

    You can make a larger reservoir or I've also seen people put these up to a water system like a drip irrigation Forgetting to water your garden is like forgetting to eat

    Why do use the drip emitters? Do they help ensure even filling of the pots?

    Why not use a half wine barrel as a stand and then set a pickle barrel on it as your water reservoir to feed the ollas? That ought to water your plants for a longer period of time.

    It's so meticulous it's beautiful! I would add a filter (mesh or anything) at the intake of your system to prevent it from getting plugged :) If the main stem of your Olla system was raised on a sort of T system, gravity would help evenly pull the water into all your ollas *Sudbscribed*

    If it was connected to a large water butt would it just keep flowing and overflow the bed or can the terracotta regulate the pressure well enough to stop it flooding?

    I have looked a lot at KZread and ollas. Everyone has done the same, sealed the hole at the bottom and have the 2 minihose going in and out to the next olla through the other hole on the top. Would it not be better to have it like this... Why not have them vertically/ lying down instead ? 1 hose goes in the hole on the side getting water and the hose goes out of the other hole to feed the next one. I will try and do that

    It would take too long for the olla at the end of the line to get water unless you just used a large hose without any drippers or bottle necks of any sort.

    Use one line per ollas and 'T' it off a larger supply line. Each gets what it needs.

  • @HighDesertGarden

    That depends on the size of your ollas and climatic conditions in your zone.

    rule of thumb: 1 fruiting tomato plant uses about 1 quart of water a day on average. soil that is too sandy or not mulched will consume HUGE amounts of water each day. 1 normal rose bush can use a whopping FIVE gallons of water a day! Ollas must be big enough (aka enough surface area) to leech out the required amount of water for the plants around it. And remember unless you seal the bottom of those the water will leach out there and not where you want it thus wasting water. Remember, water seeks it's own level and gravity pulls it down. Best to be moist near the top than the bottom. When in doubt then use MORE ollas not bigger ones. Clayola (NOT CRAYOLA) has a pretty neat system. Reason? Say tomato plants - if you direct seed them they will make 5 foot tap roots. But most people start them indoors or buy them and that kills off the tap root as soon as you transplant them resulting in a more shallow root system. The addition of Mykos (Extreme Gardening) can be VERY beneficial too. Some like Great White but I have seen reviews in both directions and it is very expensive.

    when i test pots like that, plugging up the hole and putting water in a pot, i can see that after a while, the pot has changed color on the outside. It looks 'damp' but i don't see any water-drops or something... So, i'm wondering is this'll work. The pots are terracotta and are unglazed. Is this normal and is this the case with your pots too ?

  • @HighDesertGarden

    @HighDesertGarden

    If it looks damp, then it is working. Your plants roots will make their way to the pot.
