I'm not old enough to speak surely about this, I'm only in my 60s, but when I was growing up in the 60s and 70s there were new great songs every week. Dozens of them. This kept up until the end of the 70s and then someone pulled the brakes. Almost all the new content for the last 40 years was the same old same old and the same old was just formulaic unlistenable indistiguishable junk interspersed with something unique but much worse sounding. And I found it to be the same across all genres from Reggae to Country, Rock, Rap and Jazz. It just shut down. The death knell was MTV when music became "leave nothing to the imagination" video and the music was just an excuse to shake titties on air. At least there's that. But if you pry under the hood you will still find some gems. Not mainstream, but there are some wonderful youngsters on KZread, most of them playing good oldies like this.

It is indeed - some very happy teenage (and later) memories with this one. Mam and Pop used to play loads of old 50s stuff when I was growing up, and this is one of those which always stood out. Beautiful melody and outstanding vocals. Still as lovely as ever.

I agree and I am a bit older than you. I learned to dance with my girlfriend , we would play records like this all night and dance. Fun filled innocent days, you could understand what the groups were saying. I loved growing up in the rock and roll era. Kids today missed out on what great music was. I now wish I had kept the early records of all the great ones

The story behind this song though... “Save the Last Dance for Me” is about a man telling his sweetheart to enjoy dancing the night away with other men so long as she saves the last one for him. The song is about the hidden regret and yearning that Doc Pomus felt about his disability. Pomus had polio and used a wheelchair, and was inspired to write the song after his wedding day in 1957 when he saw his wife, Willi Burke, an actress and dancer, enjoying the party dancing with friends, family, and guests while he was confined to his wheelchair. The song gives his perspective of telling his wife to have fun dancing, but reminds her who will be taking her home and "in whose arms you're gonna be".

The songwriter, Doc Pomus, was crippled but his wife or girlfriend loved to go out and dance - so he would go with her to the clubs so she could dance. She would dance with other men while he sat on the sidelines and watched. But when it was time for the last dance of the evening, he would get up and dance the last dance with her. Hence, the song. True story and very touching! That is how this wonderful song was written! (He was crippled so he couldn’t really “dance” but he would go out there for a minute and she would push him around the floor a bit.)

This was my parents song.. They got together at 15 in 1975 and married at 17 in 1977, together 40 years, married for 38. Dad was a rigger and mum a dancer (she loved tap). They always danced to this song at the end of the night no matter where we were or even if they were bickering in the car on the way there beforehand lol. We lost dad at 55 suddenly from a heart attack and then mum passed at 58 suddenly from a blood clot, Some family members say a broken heart. But this song reminds me of their true love they had for each other and will always remain on my playlist 😁

But listen to music from 1890 to 1937 for some of the finest music ever written or performed by major musical talents, both trained and untrained, pop, classical, country or otherwise. There's a vast library of amazing mostly American music few people get a chance to know.

My father passed in 1992 when I was 17, and every time I hear music from this era, I can't help but see my father sitting on the front porch with our old AM/FM radio playing the oldies. Miss u dad.Every Saturday night, we used to listen to Wolf Man Jack on 700 WLW out of Cincinnati, Ohio. That was our oldies' station, and man I miss those Saturday nights. Pizza, pop, the oldies, and playing cards. What a tradition.

This song by Ben E. King takes me right back to my first dinner dance in 1960 when I was 16 and they played this song. I fell in Love with a girl and this song. You don't forget a night like that in a hurry.

I loved the pre Kennedy assassination era of music Also, especially before 1966 I think, R&R went to ROCK after 1966.. Although it was a mix of songs, it wasnt the same. Part of thus, I believe, MEN SERENADED THE WOMEN and after the 80s, it STOPPED now, it's silly women serenading men The sperm chases the egg..its backwards

As I listen to this I was unmarried, and going out with a young man who loved me,(I was seventeen), but did not love him..so we went our different ways, but even now will remember him with fondness. Great time we had, I still have three old school friends and we have grown up together, when we meet we have a great time going back in time to all this lovely music, we sing along to it.....Oh for the 60's..great!
