    Durability alone wins the battle out of these two. Mach 4 was my favorite shoe but only lasted 210 miles before going flat. The Mach 5 will be no different since they didn’t change the outsole or lower midsole. And taking in the consideration Speed 3 added alittle more stability with widening the sole so it becomes a more comfortable long run shoe. You run a few long runs in the Mach 5 and that thing is dead. Now if you have the money you could have both in your rotation but I decided to just go with the Speed 3 because I will get more use out of it all around. PS: loved the beginning music! 🙌🏼

    I agree Scott. Seth, the durability & price should be factored into a "lifetime cost of ownership" parameter ... if the Speed 3 lasts twice as long as the Mach 5 then it and not the Mach 5 is the better "deal." Given the environmental costs of running shoes we should encourage longer lasting products rather than cheaper initial cost, shorter lifetime products.

    @@JohnABrady exactly.. You have to buy two pairs of Mach 5’s to get the same durability use of the Speed 3. That’s $280 vs $160. Also I think you will get more use out of the Speed 3 with the new changes made to it IMO

    Thanks for your thoughtfulness! I just tried on last year’s version of both these shoes (speed 2 vs. Mach 4) and the deal breaker for me was the roll of the speed 2. I would certainly include the rocker technology in the scoring system. I am 6 ft 2 and am mostly a heel striker until fast speeds (where I strike more midsole) so I need the roll for efficiency, health…

    Since price point is part of your scoring system, then I think there is a flaw. Based on your predicted durability miles, the cost per mile says the Speed 3 is actually the better buy than the Mach 5.

    This metric should be combined in the scoring system for sure keeping in mind the class of the shoe. In a super shoe you would expect it would have a much much higher cost/miles compared to a daily trainer.

    I picked up the Speed 3. Tried on and loved the fit, feel, bounce and energy return for me. I have a slight pronation and the new design changes allow me for the first time to basically wear a "Super Shoe" style plated (all be it a nylon plate) racing shoe. My first run out I blitzed my 10K PR by 3 mins! Love this shoe as someone that needs slight stability but wants to go faster for longer. So my question is...Would you use the Mach 5 as a Marathon shoe for a outside of elite level 3:30 - 4:00 effort?

  • @swenderich
    @swenderich Жыл бұрын

    Love how you keep trying to evaluate and improve the scoring system Seth! I’m a bit confused by the midsole section in this video though. Two considerations: - Several serearches have shown now that the energy return comes from the foam, not the plates. These foams are very soft though and need something to stabilize the midsole. This can be a very wide base (invincible run), siderails (tempus), a carrier foam (vomero), a dual layer system with a firmer layer (mach 5) or a plate. So to rate the speed lower on midsole because it has a plate is contrived. You’d have to do the same for the mach because it’s dual layer, the tempus because of the side rails, etc. - Brings me to the second point: I think you should approach the midsole as a whole, with everything that’s in it. The plate in the speed is as mich part of the midsole as the rubberized layer in the mach… Any insertion in the sole comes at a weight penalty, for which you’ll give them a lower score in the weight department already 😊 Anyway, just my thoughts. Love your reviews, they are always very helpful and insightful and scoring is just terribly hard! Keep it up!

    Totally agree with this take. The Speed 3 basically gets dinged twice for the plate, once on the weight comparo and again on the mid-sole comparo. I'd think the midsole comparo would be about feel, energy return, cushion, etc. and not on composition. Weight and/or durability would take care of that factor.

    Personally it's going to take ALOT for me to get another pair of Hoka. They break down way too fast and for someone who has to budget for shoes, im not happy paying upwards to 150 for shoes that lose their everything as fast as Hoka. I bought the mach 4 and rincon 3 and both broke down, in multiple spots so fast that it left a bad taste in my mouth with them. Heel counter inside had holes in 2 weeks and the outsole was already cracked in some spots and worn down in a month. Right now, because the speed 3 haven't dropped for nonreviewing people yet, I'd still go speed 2. My first pair I'm still rotating (only used them for racing while I trained with the mach4) and have NOW put 400 plus miles in them and they still have tons of rubber outsole. Ontop of that you can get the speed 2 discounted heavily at a lot of places right now in prep for the 3. Kind of a no brainer personally.

    I agree. I bought the Bondi 7 and the heel has holes in it within 3 weeks...and I was told the shoe was very durable...it wasn't at all...plus for 150, I was stoked to finally get a quality shoe for running and it broke down quickly

  • @TimGrose

    More of these I watch, the more confused I get. With a 8.0-7.3 overall score, the Mach 5 wins "hands down" but mainly because of the better price point. However based on the durability prediction you will get 2.8 miles per dollar in the Speed 3 but only 2.5 in the Mach 5. In other words you will end up paying more for the Mach 5 in the long run. For me the red flag is the Speed 3 has a 8mm drop but the Mach 5 5mm. I would say it is rare for runners to be able to equally like both these drops.

  • @bentaylor3730

    @bentaylor3730

    Many studies have been done to debunk the whole heel to forefoot drop in shoes especially 8mm vs 5.5mm and as someone who runs in both a brooks pure cadence (4mm drop) a Hoka One One Speedgoat Evo and now also the Saucony Endorphin Speed 3. It doesn't make a difference imo, and I'm a forefoot striker, there might be exceptions to this but for 2.5mm drop difference is not even a nit pick little alone a red flag. Each to their own but I'd say there are more runners that would be fine with 2.5mm difference.

    @@bentaylor3730 I guess we all have certain things we look at in shoes before considering if it might one we would like to buy. AFAIK all Hoka shoes are 5mm drop, I have tried 3 different models and did not like any of them. For me, for the road, I mostly wear Nike or adidas or Saucony Speed/Pro and most of them are 8mm or more. Was it the drop I did not like or just the shoe per se. I felt the drop was certainly a factor here as the Hokas felt a bit "slappy" but yeah I can run in low drop shoes as I have to in track or XC spikes but I am not doing daily, easy miles in them as I would do in these two shoes. I have the Speed 3 and enjoy it so, on the face of it, maybe I am missing out not having the Mach 5. Maybe I should get one and see...

    @@TimGrose yeah some shoes just don't click with done people, I have flat feet and was given Brooks Adrenaline shoes for the support as well as spending $500 on orthotics (that had no padding which contributed to injuries) I think they helped but I kept on getting shin splints and stress fractures. It wasn't until I tried changing my running form to mid to forefoot striking instead of heel striking and taking more steps per minute resulting in less impact to my legs that I noticed a big difference and reduction in injury so instead of more stability I went the opposite with the Brooks Pure Cadence which are more minimal which seemed to help. Shows how many variables there are to take into consideration for each person, and I'm still learning.

    The sibling to the Speed and Pro; the Endorphin Shift doesn't get much love but it is a great distance trainer! and it's extremely durable!! It does such an awesome job of complimenting the family. In my last training cycle for the Newport Marathon in June, I used all three. The Shift for easy and long runs, the speed for some easy and all-speed workouts, and I raced in the Pros. Best training cycle I have ever had; PR'ed by 3 minutes and Qualified for Boston!! I put over 500 miles on the shifts and they still feel great under feet over 400 on the speeds and they both have tread and the energy return is still pretty good.

    QD easy one - All that is gold does not glitter, Not all who wander are lost, The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not touched by the frost. Question on the review though - if the Mach is lighter and provides the same snap - why would you not choose that to race over the Saucony? I can agree with a lot of your assessment there across the board but maybe you are being tricked by the plate to say its the choice for a race. Not sure it seems like the evidence you presented and your preference of lightness would dictate the Mach for racing...

    This is comfortably your worst review / shoe battle ever. Here are some notes as to why and ways to improve each note. 1 weight comparison. Obviously the one with more cushion is gonna be heavier, it’s just more shoe. A way to improve this would possibly be to do a weight to cushion ratio to more accurately compare. 2 durability / price battle. The speed lasts probably double the life of the mach, so theoretically the mach should be around half of the price. Speed is a lot more bang for your buck. Again, a way to standardize this would be to do a cost per mile type analysis. 3 your whole analysis on the speed. I work in a shoe store and literally everyone there would take the speed 3 over the 2, even in the atrocious blue colorway. Your bias for firmer, more responsive shoes is a little too apparent. One of you favorite shoes is the kinvara and that’s one of the firmest shoes I’ve ever worn. Figure out some way to crowdsource your reviews. 4 the intended use. Both of these are speed / uptempo shoes, so how much should you be considering whether or not you can run easy in them. You’re absolutely ridiculous if you run easy miles in a shoe quite literally called the SPEED. Rate shoes based on their intended purpose. Personally, the mach is one of my least favorite shoes to go fast in, I think it’s an awful speed shoe but the best daily trainer out there.

  • @ericfrisvold6487
    @ericfrisvold6487 Жыл бұрын

    At what point do you add a “value” category? If a show can be a daily trainer and a race day shoe doesn’t that provide more value than an easy day shoe? The cost of the shoe is one thing but value more than the dollar amount. I love shoes but if one shoe checks two boxes that’s my winner.

    Gotta disagree with the midsole scoring. To say they provide the sane energy return but dock the endorphin b/c of the plate is essentially a double penalty b/c you docked the weight as well. If the midsoles are the same but 1 has a plate that shouldn’t matter as the plate is a disadvantage in the weight category. Regardless it’ll take a lot to get me into another pair of Hoka as my last pair (Clifton) felt dead at just under 200 miles meanwhile my Speed 2 are pushing 300 and feel great.

    This was a joke. No way the the peba is going to lose to gimmicky EVA. The Mach 5 has a great ride but common. And when it comes to value which is maybe the most important, the speed wins hands down. You might get 250 miles out of the Hokas and 500 miles out of the Speed. If Saucony gets rid of the plate to lose weight than imagine the weight of the Mach after the my add some proper rubber.

He chose the Mach 5 right out of the gate and wouldn’t ease up at all for the saucony. 7.4 ounces to 7.1 and he is talking about heel lock. This guy shouldn’t be reviewing shoes if he is going to push his own favorites without letting factual data be present the saucony is much better quality and durability. When he bends the shoes the saucony return is much better!!!!

  • @buddyrye9190

    A few things: the Mach doesn’t have enough cushioning as a daily trainer in my opinion unless you have a bmi under 22.. Also, not as many folks care about lockdown except for uptempo/racing shoes, so I think this review overvalues this. The Mach also has a very poor forefoot midsole. It will collapse in under 100 miles. At least the Rincons were widely understood to be a shorter distance light trainer. I know there will be some that get offended by this comment, but I think everyone should go to the store and try it for themselves. In my opinion, the Machs are the most overhyped Hokas ever made. I suppose I’m spoiled by having 5 or 6 Clifton 1s and wishing they still existed.

Skills that would never have been possible (because of the beating the body takes doing the repetions required to learn them) are now done and are even improved upon !
