Love these battles, but I would think the Tecton X vs. Edge would be a more logical apple to apple-ish comparison, instead of the Speedgoat. I'd be curious, however, about the Speedgoat 5 vs. the new Mafate Speed 4 (now out). Not that I'm suggesting anything... ;) Nice comparo.

I think Speedgoat v Xodus Ultra would make more sense too. Both are max cush, non-plated.

Though I was interested in both of these, I just picked up a pair of the Mafate Speed 4s yesterday. Setting off for the first run in a couple of minutes.

That "durable mesh" blew out in my Peregrine 12s after 175 miles (Both shoes, inside of the ball of foot). Saucony, to their credit, did send me a new pair, which I hope will hold up better. The Edge looks the same- hope it will hold up!

Endorphin Edge really is an amazing breakthrough in comfort for less-technical trails, but for me is a little tippy on very steep rocky terrain and not very durable, just as you point out, Seth. I’m one of those rare birds who doesn’t get along well with the Hoka Speedgoat, which doesn’t seem to fit my foot shape or biomechanics. But the new Hoka Mafate Speed 4 is just terrific! It is almost a combination of the Speedgoat 5 for traction and agility with the comfort of the Saucony Endorphin Edge. Highly recommend tryingthe Mafate Speed 4 for those who like higher stack-height trail shoes, or the Norda 001, which delivers a comfortable and fast ride without the higher stack if you are looking for greater agility and the best upper yet ;-)

@@SethJamesDeMoor you’ll be out there again before you know it. Resets are vitally important to higher-impact endurance sports and you’ll be stronger because of this injury-recovery phase. Let me know if you enlist interns to help with shoe reviews as I’m glad to volunteer.

I'm most excited about the mafate speed 4. Never tried the mafate line up before but wow that shoe looks solid!

@@JaySizz I haven't had much success with hoka either. I won't mind the price if it's as good on foot as it is on paper. I have a couple trail races early next year that the mafate sounds perfect for.

I think it's the Edge for me, it's at a discount now and I LOVE the colour!

I did my review on the Speedgoat 5 over the on FB group after a 100 miles and there is some issues with the shoe but also couple good things. I feel the Saucony Xodus Ultra might be a better option. I also went with the Hoka Tecton X over the Edge for the stability factor.

Would the SG5 vs Xodus Ultra be a closer battle? Certainly price point is much more in line... 🤔

I love my Speedgoat 5’s but I picked up a stone lodged between the exposed foam and outsole rubber and couldn’t believe it when I took it out realised it pierced the foam all the way up through the insole. Has to be a major design flaw for a trail shoe. I see the new mafate has less exposed foam - maybe for this reason. Hope it doesn’t reduce the longevity too much.

Stones piercing exposed midsole on all versions of speedgoats can be an issue if you live somewhere with a lot of sharp stones. The mafate has a much firmer exposed foam. I think they would hold up to sharp stones better

The Edge is a really good shoe for flat softer trails but on the roots and rocks it is an ankle rolling machine, especially on the downhill.

My honest review: Sole is too soft I twisted my ankle 3 times on one run, unless you use those on non technical trails, otherwise that’s not a good shoe at all. As you can see I have a few Saucony I think those are quite bad.. sorry but am not happy at all to buy at a premium price and not getting value for money Reply from Saucony Canada: Our team has carefully read your review, and although it did not meet all of our website guidelines, we appreciate the thought and time that went into it.

I haven’t had this issue that much. If you focus on forward or mid strike it tends to be a lot More stable. BUT it demands focus for me to keep this top of mind. The heel is narrow and could benefit from being wider…especially for the distance you would run it at

I've got both. They are different shoes- the Edge is more "cushiony", which people tend to feel it's less "stable". Overall, I agree with your review! :) Pricewise- Speedgoat 5 for sure.

The new Salomon Soft Ground shoe is the real deal Seth. I'm not sure about anything past 50 miles tho...strong feet and ankles are necessary.

Uhhh the noosa tri is not a saucony shoe…

I have Endorphin Speed and Pro and a few Hoka pairs, I find the midsole in the Saucony's sooo much more exiting 😅 perhaps the midsole in the Speedgoat differs from the Torrent and the Rincon 👍

It does, I run the Speedgoat series and Torrent and the Speedgoat offers a more plush feel, definitely won’t find the same energy return the PB+ offers in any of the Hoka lineup though, PB+ is an awesome foam, Speedgoats and Torrent II are both great shoes, I have ran many 50+KM runs/races in both. I am however likely to try the Edge just because I want to see how the tech delivers and the fact it’s almost a full oz lighter in my size than the Speedgoat. Lots of awesome shoes to be had these days. 🎉

Filmed Daniel Burton’s finish at the Valley 5000 one mile race this past Friday night…Senior Grand Master PR 6:56!

I bought the Hoka Speedgoat 5 because they make wide sizes, which is my first pair of Hokas, the ride is comfortable. With that being said, the lugs on the out sole have already warn down after ~150 miles and they killed my forth toe on the downhills. I would expect a trail shoe to last longer than ~150 mile. Disappointed in the life of the shoe and I guess I could have gone up a 1/2 size but normally wear 10.5. QOD : took a pic of me at A-Frame today.

The speedgoat 5 is not short. You may want to consider 11 in all of your shoe

Is the Edge a realistic shoe for a trail 100 miler with roughly ~20 of those miles on the road?

Just ordered the Edge today, I hope I'm not disappointed

@@munkki2700 Personally yes I like them. I do a lot of my running on compact ground like hard packed trails etc.... I've not used them on technical terrain. They are very comfortable, the grip however was a bit lacking during my first run however it has got better the more I've used them. Just make sure you get the right size otherwise you'll have potential stability issues

I know it is now 2024....but I am getting prepared to hike the Camino de Santiago which is 780km or 485 miles. someone recommended doing them in the Hoka Speedgoat 5, though buying them one size bigger for room. Do you think this would be a good shoe for something like this? Thanks

#QoD: picture of the sunrise and the back of a fellow runner a couple hours into the Twisted Branch 100k last Saturday. I wore the Endorphin Edge in that race and they were fantastic!

Not specific to this battle but the lugs on my Saucony Xodus Ultra outsole have chipped / torn in places at 100 miles.

Same by 20 miles I had big chunks out of them. Ended up getting a pair on warranty. Love the shoes otherwise favorite all around trail shoe.

I use the endorphin speed and pro and didn’t even know edge was a thing till I seen your video mine will be here tomorrow gonna do a 10k trail out the box I been running in my pro on the trail so I’m excited to see how different this will be in a actual trail shoe

Seth no patience necessary. As far as the evolution of your channel, think how many people you are going to help getting back to running after an injury, while they follow your example on how to do it the right way. So sorry it’s at your expense and you have to go through this but us runners out there and there’s a lot of them are “watching” you. No pressure there 😂

Speedgoat 5 wins as it does a wide fit 😀

My Speedgoat 5's are DEAD after 250 miles. My Xodus Ultra's are super lively after 200, so should still be awesome well beyond 250. Hoka's foam compresses so quickly and Saucony's are way more durable.

this is reality with every hoka shoe, no matter how the fanboys try to take them into 800 miles. dead midsole creates injuries.

I did alittle over 100 miles in the SG5 and had to stop using them. Replaced with Xodus ultra. If you are in the FB group I did a review on them

I've been running in the Evo for a couple of years and recently picked up some 5s. It might be psychological, but I find the 5s much more mellow and comfortable running at slower paces - it feels like I could just go all day in them. The Evos feel a bit more nimble and 'edgier' - I'm planning on training in the 5s and doing long races in the Evos.

@@seanbacon2867 Yeah, I love my Evos. I've got a pair with about 750km which are still going strong, another pair with about 100km on which I save for races and I've just picked up another pair to keep for when the race ones have done their stint.

QD: Last running photo was me on the summit of pikes peak yesterday for my final really big effort long run of the training cycle! Side note, I have both of these shoes and definitely like them for different things. At the end of the day the edge will be my racing shoe in September though. Great battle!

Speedgoat was too mushy for me. Appreciate the 6 drop and the snappy climbing nature of the edge.

I went to dig it up. There's still some discussion about him. It reads like bad 4chan hate thread. There are fair criticism tho. I didn't know people actually donate money to him tho. It makes sense. He should put a disclaimer of some sort.

Lighter EVA means significantly less life in the midsole. No one should be buying a shoe with an EVA sole in 2023.
