Satnam Singh: One in a Billion? Not Anymore

When Satnam Singh left India, as a 14-year-old in 2010, his story seemed destined for a Bollywood ending. Four years and a Netflix documentary later, Satnam is back where he began. But both he and his family feel let down by the very people that showed him dreams of fame, fortune and sporting glory.

It breaks my heart to see him back from where he started. This cricket obsessed country would never be able to get anything beyond cricket. He could have been our Yao ming, China has evolved in the game. Their government too have roped in the infrastructure required for basketball. Now basketball is a popular sport in China and it could have been in India too. Sadly our government is too busy doing caste politics. It is high time that the government took it to task and started doing something about the sports ecosystem. I don't even feel like writing any further. This has left me depressed.

Do you know India has a ice hockey team and inline hockey team. I represent india 2 times as captain in inline hockey and I am also first to play in africa cup and score.so I would its federation responsibility to make people aware and fight for its right from government . This the sole purpose of federations.

I like Satnam. He is a hard worker, very intelligent, has a great personality. The reality is he will never make the NBA. Quite frankly it will be hard for him to even play in most overseas leagues. He is a big plotting centre, the NBA is all small ball now. He has no chance to play at the European level because all their bigs can shoot and are more mobile. Outside of some garbage low paying league in Asia, his career is over. He would make a great ambassador for an NBA India initiative. I think that is his calling. Once he accepts that he isn't good enough for the NBA, then he can take the next step. To me it sounds like he is thinking NBA or bust, not exploring other options. But he is young so I understand. It's hard to accept that date at such a young age.

Anugrah Yadav you probably don't know much about basketball. I in no way insulted Satnam. BTW I played professionally for several years, so take ur coach potato keyboard warrior talk elsewhere. Anyways bottom line is he didn't grow up playing in the USA so I don't see how that has any bearing. Don't give me the if he grew up blah blah crap. Actually playing in India helped him. His agent basically bamboozled teams into drafting him. He had been playing basketball at a young age in India, and came to America at 17 to play highschool ball. His agent told him to tell scouts that he just starting playing at 17. Because if they knew that he was playing from the time he was 12 years old, they would expect him to be a much better player. They drafted him based on potential. They thought he was a guy that just started playing the game. Bottom line is he will never play in the NBA. Ok answer this question for me, is he even the best player on the Indian national team? The answer is no LOL. The truth hurts sometimes. As I said there are other options than the NBA. If his goal is NBA or bust then he will live in his village forever. Life goes on, and he has to adapt. There are a plethora of opportunities outside the NBA

How much you earn depends on how much money you are able to rake in. Cricketers like Virat Kohli and Dhoni are able to draw in millions of fans, this means that people spend more on games and stadiums are packed. Advertisers see this as a good opportunity and start paying money to have their ads put up. Now I mean no disrespect to Satnam, he seems to be great guy who is hard working and talented. But how will he get money? Of he is not able to rake in viewers, then none of what I mentioned above will happen. And if there is not much revenue then the league and organisation will pay him less as his value to the game is less. This is why our cricketers earn a much more significant amount of money when compared to him.

Problem is not cricket...problem is there are too many people who associate themselves with cricket on a emotional level while this is good for cricket it is too harmful for other sports....what govt can do is increase awareness and opportunities for other sports but believe me nothing will change unless we as the citizens try giving chance to other sports.

Why is there so much of discrimination in sports? On one hand every second cricket player of India is a chief of army, navy, airforce, police and what not, on the other hand we have players like Satnam who require a source of income so that he can focus on his future but is not given any. Now who would risk their future trying to get into NBA when they have seen this story of Satnam. Where is the sports minister now? Where is MODI who is travelling the world and telling people how great India is and how much opportunities they have? Oh yes, he is busy attending the marriage of Virat and Anushka. WOW.

It isnt about the whole world saying it. The whole world said that Trump is the most stupid and selfish man to ever stand for elections and would never win,. Well, guess who is the president of USA now and the most powerful man in the world. Lets talk facts here if you want to. And yes India is a third world country and we are poor but our army is the 5th strongest in the world, cricket team number 1 in the world (where russia and america cant even qualify for the world cup), hockey team no. 6th(where russia ranks 22nd and usa 26th). I could go on and on but your dumb ass would still talk about "What the World says."

It has nothing to do with the race of anyone. Even if he was a muslim, or a hindu or of any other religion or race still would be treated like this. Its the negligence of the Indian govt and people as a whole that we are not supporting budding sportsmen in any other sport other than cricket. When a budding sportsman sees that he has no future in that sport then they automatically starts focusing on things that would get them money for surviving.
