You made a good point. I also ask you to imagine someone being pressed over if I wear an Afro style to work and it’s being seen as unprofessional while I’m finally choosing to embrace the hair that grows out of my head after years of subliminally believing it wasn’t “good” enough. The frustration/hurt/anger (not making it fully right) is deeper than a bonnet for us.

To the people making this about race… I will agree that it is more commonly worn by black women/men these days HOWEVER sleep bonnets/caps have been worn by ALL races. Look up women wearing them in the 1950s.

A bonnet is just fabricated cap to protect your hair, that’s it-clearly all races have hair therefor anyone should be abled to use them. Look at nurses and surgeons THEY WERE BONNETS! I’m not against you wanting to keep your hair nice. What you mentioned is practical. I think what you should consider is that this is really deeper than a bonnet for us. Until you walk in a “black” persons shoes and live their reality I think you would understand more of the “why” behind the uproar (not making it right). Hopefully you can have empathy. I ask that you ask a “black” person why they are frustrated and up in arms and listen to understand. We need to heal.

@amberkhashmal

@@sweet_cha0s You know, I don’t think it’s the same. I would say the bonnets you are describing were more so like a hat (outdoors wear) or nightcap. I believe it was moreso a fashion statement/trend of that time rather than it being worn solely for protection (although I did read something about luster for the hair). The reason why I feel that way: 1) The bonnets looked very elaborate and I saw a picture where a woman’s bonnet matched her night clothes or if it was worn out, day clothes. 2) If it was for hair protection, why did I never seen any women of European descent wear one at over night trip events? This seems like a new trend people are catching wind of. I’m not against women finding techniques to protect their hair. It’s the lack of acknowledgment for me. The bonnets you see women promoting today are from the style “black” women have been wearing, not from the 1800s. I also want to add: 3) The reason black women wear bonnets is to protect our hair from friction that leads to breakage and damage because of our hair texture. Before wearing a bonnet I wore a satin/silk scarf even when I wore my hair straightened. The satin/silk protects our hair.

Pls people do your history when it comes to bonnets. The term bonnet is French and was invented in Europe during the Georgian Era. There were hundreds of bonnets made before the term was made and I’ll give you a few examples African style bonnet made for hair protection using mostly satin. European dual usage fashion and protection bonnets one side made of cotton (exterior) and one side made of satin or silk (interior) Bonnets always have and always will be the used to protect hair especially during extremely cold/hot climates AND in beds. This lady isn’t claiming to have invented bonnets nor is she denying it’s cultural value (which btw is multi cultural for centuries asian, african, European and latin people have been using bonnets) so please stop with the “racism” claim cards And yes I can speak on this as I’m biracial and obsessed with history and historical fashion

Stop making it about race. Bonnets were originally created and worn by WHITE women since the 1400's. European women wore protective hairstyles that were often wrapped in layers of linen cloth since the midevil times during the day and night! White women stopped wearing bonnets to sleep during the 1930's because hairstyles became much shorter (the bob was in), and women started to wash their hair ever day and style it down rather than up in a bun. Black women did not start this trend and they were NOT the first to use it. Black women came up with the idea of the silk bonnet (appropriated from the original European bonnet) in the 18th century, which is far more recent. Let's just get that straight.

Just thought I'd say you sound very hurt that bonnets an silk scarves etc are only recently being worn by women of your hue, and that it's in reaction to BW embracing their natural hair and breaking away from the beauty standard that put them at the bottom and women like you at the top. Be fr, no white woman wanted to be caught wearing a bonnet until BW started showing themselves wearing theirs, and talking about the benefits it does for our hair type. Y'all yt women cling to anything, even when it does you no good. And be honest, back in the day, yt wearing bonnets to sleep was for vastly different reasons than BW wear bonnets today and in the past.

@@SydTheBeautifulManifester you are very hurt to think of yourself on the bottom. You are very desperate to ignore history because you would rather the boost to your self esteem to believe that white women are copying black women. It's a sign of insecurity to make yourself the center of something you aren't the center of. Insecurity is toxic and that's what you and all of the ones who think like you are doing here, make the atmosphere toxic with your hostility, bitterness, and resentment. Your life is so small. Even just looking at tv or movies from the 50s would tell you white women covered their hair at night. They washed their hair once a week. Also be humble and realize that while Africans brought practices with them to the new world, they came "empty handed" so to speak and adapted many practices and ways of life from white Americans. A bonnet, silk or otherwise was standard in Europe for centuries. White women due to advertising and marketing dropped the ways of their foremothers and started their daily shampooing blow drying but the smarter ones are realizing they have been duped and are returning to oiling and weekly washing.

I think everyone is misunderstanding the frustration. It’s not about white women not being allowed to wear them. It’s about not giving people recognition and credit for giving you the idea. Also, that people don’t take the advice from black women on anything including hair care but call us useless and ignorant when we are the ones with all of the hair care and beauty influences that many people copy and try to seem as though they got the idea on their own. Black woman wears a bonnet, and no one asks why or seems to care. A white girls wears a bonnet and everyone wants to know why and thinks she’s a genius who gave out the best hair care secret ever. It makes black women feel invisible for their culture and habits as being influential and beneficial.

I really enjoy that when a woman puts on a bonnet we all talk about what color she is. I love that. (Sarcasm).

When I get out of the shower, I blow dry my bangs and clip them. Then I gently scrunch my 2B waves with a microfiber towel, apply very little product since I also have high porosity hair and then I put my hair up in a satin or silk bonnet. Then release those pretty bangs from your clip. Hope this helps 🤗

Please if you are going to incorporate silk into your haircare use silk pollow case, silk bonnet or cab will do the opposite of hair growth, like if you wear too much beanie or hats in general you will have a hair loose because not only does the band in those hats pulls on the hair line everytime you take off your hat, also because if you have too much heat in the body that also tends to hair loose, and as we always ralk about how our pores need to breathe guess what our scalo also need to breathe, just put down the silk cap and choose the pillow case.
