SAS HOTEL SIEGE IN NAIROBI | CHRISTIAN CRAIGHEAD | The INSIDE STORY

Ойын-сауық

In January 2019 Al Shabaab militants besieged a hotel in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi. What they hadn't counted on was a SAS Operator who was prepared to take matters into his own hands.
This is the inside story of Christian Craighead, an SAS Operator who ran towards the gunfire to evacuate hundreds of trapped civilians. We talk about his career, loadout and equipment he used.

    I’m not British, but it still makes me feel good to see this, knowing that most of my ancestry comes from the UK. It’s not quite the same, since all of my closest relatives have a different nationality, and have had for many generations now, of course, but, as an American, my country is a very close ally, at least, so we are all on the same side, anyway. I also speak the same language, and have the same blood as him, basically, so I feel pretty good about what he did, too. Most importantly, though, despite all of the many great accomplishments we’ve had throughout the years, he makes me even prouder to be a white person!

    I know exactly what your saying, I don’t know him but I feel a ridiculous sense of pride and gratitude that people like him are amongst us. Plus he seems a great guy. I’ve met a lot of soldiers, some really nice, some horrible aggressive people looking to cause trouble for the sake of it when they are on leave. That’s the difference with him, he seems so down to earth and oblivious to how much of a hard lethal bastard he is compared to us normals 😏

    @PatrickKelly-lz3pv no God made people. With their own minds and brains. We make our own choices. I never said he made heros, he simply helps carves paths for us. It's the choices we make, whether we choose to be good or bad is up to us. Some save lives through being a soldier, or special operators. Some save lives, or just help others by making the choice to go left or right. Horrible things happen to good people more often than to bad people. I should say people who choose to be bad and do wrong. I'm not here to preach. Just to spread what I see, I've seen alot. I have seen evil I have been in war, I have also seen love and peace happiness kindness and what man does to protect and defend the innocent. Take it however you want, I do pray for everyone in general. No I don't pray for the evil as they are evil and chose to stray from God.

    With all due respect - I practiced, then protected their operations, and later fought side by side with both SAS and Delta. SAS was the first european unit that took part in additional training of our unit, the first european but before them were the Americans. It's hard to say who is the best in this profession. SAS may have the longest traditions but I spent over 6 years in the Middle East (and not only there) and the Delta operators impressed me the most. This guy from Nairobi is a really tough guy, he has my great respect. SAS is outstanding SF, but if I had to assess today in retrospect which units were the best trained, the most effective ... among those with whom I had the opportunity to work, I would say - 1. Delta 2. ST6 and israeli Sajjeret Matkal 3. Ex aequo - British SAS, Canadians, Aussies, SEALS and polish GROM. The Norwegians, Swedes and Germans are also excellent. But Delta is still the greatest elite among the world's best military units. The most secretive and least numerous SF, I've ever met. That's my experience... with all due respect to the British commando elite. Special Greetings from Your Allies - S.

    @@ColonelStanley It's not about impressing you though is it. Explain how you can judge on who were the best trained and most effective. You also haven't taken into consideration the theatres in which some SF operate. Operating purely in your own country will of course give you the biggest advantage, but being effective in operations all over the world is what separates the men from the boys. I would also like to ask, how do you know Delta is the most secretive and least numerous? I think you are making some things up.

  • @ColonelStanley

    @ColonelStanley

    Жыл бұрын

    @@Mk1Male Indeed, at this level the differences are minimal. And of course you are right when you write about a specific theater of operations, but these are my experiences that I gathered during six years of service in the Middle East - Iraq, Afghanistan (and three more places that I can't write about), that was the theater where I cooperated with the above-mentioned units . Of course, I'm no judge, these are just my experiences. If you were a soldier, you would also collect different experiences and compare. I have respect for everyone because each of these units showed full professionalism. I will repeat again, the differences may be minimal, the details decide but that's how I remember it. On a public forum I can't write exactly, with all the details, why I think so... It's secret, I can only generalize it all. And such an assessment may be subject to change, depending on the generation. Even at the beginning of the 21st century, I could write that there are no significant differences (in the theater of operations mentioned) between DF, ST6 and SAS ... but now that I am retired after more than 20 years of service in SF, I can summarize it. I am writing about myself, not about You or the experience of this very brave SAS operator. Everything - training, training and joint operations. Soldiers from KSK or, for example, from JTF2 could have a completely different opinion. Coming back to DF - "The most secretive and least numerous, I'VE EVER MET.... i've ever met". I haven't written about top-secret paramilitary groups that are subordinate to, for example, the CIA. Why I think they are the most secretive military unit I've met? Please, think who can answer such a question? ;) You have every right to think that I'm making some things up. This is your right. Kind regards - S.

    The "Blackbeard" logo isn't just for coffee. It has been "standardized" as a generic pirate flag as late as 1912, Although other famous pirates were alleged to have flown similarly designed flags. Ironically it has never been proved that Blackbeard flew this version, preferring a simple white skull on black, or the notorious red blood flag. The Blackbeard design was adopted by special forces operators as it symbolizes (as in pirate days) that no mercy would be given and the enemy, upon spotting the flag should expect death. A great video by the way.

    Why do so very few people acknowledge Craig's belief in God and angels. This man had Divine protection and deserved it. His heart was so good, and he worked for good and against tremendous evil forces, with God's love. Thank You God, through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit for protecting Your people who are after Your own heart. Amen. And so be it.

Chris killed two of them and rescued victims, the other two were found by the police assisting hours later, when clearing the hotel; holed up in an apartment, they refused to surrender and were killed by the police.

    In 7 years of service, I only ever briefly encountered 2x " Hereford hooligans " and we were debriefed AFTER it happened. It was about 1994, I was stationed in Lisburn NI and we were coming up to the marching season. The RUC and the various battalions around NI needed some training to be able to emulate the potential drama that they could face. Well, I was selected out of a cast of a thousand ( jiffed ) along with about 50 others and we were sent across the Irish sea by battle bus - all the way to Dover. Right near it is a little army camp called Lydd camp. Lydd camp is like they've grabbed the whole setting of Eastenders, Coronation street and Brookside and bolted them together. There's a post office, a community hall, a chip shop, a bar and a post office. Upon arrival, all 50 of us were gonna play the parts of " everyday folk " - and some would be given extra tasks like run the bar, run the chip shop etc. Some guys were given taxi's and they were told to drive them into scenarios to emulate everyday life in NI. In pairs, we'd all be allocated a house to live in ( all houses were bare floorboards with nothing else in there ) - Sleeping was on a rollmat in your issued maggot. They'd set up various scenarios such as a gunman popping off shots at a patrol, who would then escape via a waiting taxi and the squaddies and RUC would then react. They brought in EOD to do some small controlled explosions and EOD would also practice their bomb clearing techniques. On to the encounter: This one day, we were there about 4 days. It was the same every day, just rehashed scenarios with the same outcome, except on this occasion, we were told to get about 30 persons together with plackards and banners, and do a bit of a protest on a street corner for half an hour. We were given no instructions. What could possibly go wrong? Out of nowhere, a car came hurtling around a corner and slammed its brakes on. I don't know why, but we all started to walk towards the car continuing in character. They dropped 2x wizzbangs from the car. Wizzbangs are like a tube of aluminium with several charges attached to the sides. The fist charge goes off - send the aluminium case in one direction - makes a bang, followed by another small bang and the wizzbang would fly in another direction. Remember, they dropped 2x of these. We scattered like little kids and we didn't know what to do - or what was happening. With pistols drawn, both occupants got out the car, person 1 ran towards a house - kicked the door in and ran upstairs, followed about 3 seconds later by the 2nd person. the 2nd person stayed downstairs. Basically the first guy cleared the upstairs and ran back down, whilst his buddy cleared the downstairs. They left rapidly by the back door and into a waiting car. This drove off and was never seen again. One of the DS staff shouted " Endex " Briefing in the community hall in 15 minutes. We were all there going holy fck, what just happened. In the briefing, we were told that the Hereford hooligans ( 22 SAS ) heard we had a little exercise going on and they wanted one of their 2 man crews to practice their car evacuation drills. Their drill was over in less than a minute. We were also told that they had live rounds. I'm sure they wouldn't of shot anyone, but had someone of got in their way, they'd of probably ran through them and left them needing physio. The crazy thing was, they probably drove the 220 miles there + return trip for a 1 minute practice run. That is my ONLY brief interaction with them in the 7 years I served. You hear about them ( sometimes ) but usually, you're told bits of what they do - long after they've done it.

Second tour manning a checkpoint got a phone call there's an unmarked patrol car coming to the base, open the gates let them in and don't ask any questions. These lads got out the boss handed me an envelope and said only open it if you get a radio call, they were tooled up and slipped off into the night. I heard the next day they had finished their task and moved out, only later I heard they were SAS.
