SARTRE | Is Hell Other People ? | From Existence to Freedom

Jean-Paul Sartre #sartrephilosophy : in this #existentialism philosophical Thoughts podcast, we unravel the layers of Sartre's #philosophy, and explore the enigmatic concept of " #hell is other people".
In Sartre's existentialist philosophy, the individual is thrust into a universe devoid of inherent meaning or purpose, left to confront the daunting task of creating their own significance through authentic choices and actions. Central to Sartre's existentialism is the concept of radical freedom, wherein individuals are entirely responsible for their existence and must navigate the inherent anxiety and uncertainty that accompanies this realization. Moreover, Sartre famously posited that "existence precedes essence,"

I am nothing that hits the spot. Yet realizing you are nothing gives rise that you can be anything. Amazing. Being human is not for the faint of heart be strong I say. Being and nothing is one and the same (can't have on without the other) if you can understand that you will understand what being human is.

Hell, yes! I totally agree. Hell is other people. Expectations and rules imposed upon an individual are just a bunch of bullshit! Camus says life is absurd. I agree with that as well.

Good video as always. The "other-referential" self awareness which attempts to turn the self into an object of observation sounds like a really good description for the eastern concept of ego. I'm still not sure I fully grasp the solution to Sartre's point though. Do we just fully let go of judgments, descriptions and assumptions? Or is there a better way to form images of reality? Should we attempt to meet others as the objects they espouse to, or should we blind ourselves to both our image and their own and meet them in the immediate, which would be kinder? When and how should we seek recognition from another, or is it always a fools gamble? It also reminds me of the quote; "Man cannot remake himself without suffering, for he is both the marble and the sculptor," which makes me wonder how much more it would hurt to have people misinterpret the artwork you've made. I guess the only answer can be to make it for yourself and not for other people. But even then, you can't know when you'll eventually desire to make it public and have others recognize your work.

Thanks, wonderful content on your channel! I can't help by think that Sartre had a serious inferiority complex the way he speaks of being petrified when becoming the object of another's gaze... Perhaps he was bullied as a child? Wonderful thinker none the less, and I can honestly say I relate to much of what he says.

Sartre sounds like a persona who didn’t have a lot of self-confidence and wilted under the gaze of others. I don’t gaze at people to judge them, and I look away from people (women) in order not to have desire for them. Weak people worry about people think of them; and absurdly weak people make judgements about someone they randomly see on the street.
