I noticed a few times that if you force a faction into horde mode it often won't be really prone to retake it's last city, the hordes appears pretty far from the settlement so there is a big chance that they'll go somewhere else instead. Playing as the sarmatians i went west and attacked the lombards/burgundians with a single stack (didn't horde myself), forced them into hordes but they just used that power to attack the western romans and form new kingdoms there, which was kinda amazing btw, being the one that caused the domino effect. So going west is really good if you wanna keep things classical and not become a horde (but take vicus vandali fast so you won't be down to 0 city after the vandals or the huns storm your starting capital). Central Europe is a good powerbase, pretty secure and get you good monnies. And your new neighbors won't be able to compete with your cav, romans or germanic factions such as the saxons. There were apparently plans to do a little bit to differentiate the Sarmatian and Roxolani factions in terms of unit diversity. For example, there was a Javelin unit planned for the Roxolani, which was to be a reskin of the Sassanid Kurdish Javelinmen. The textures for many such deleted units are still on the game disc.

Ahh that's interesting. Yeah I have to admit it's a shame that there isn't a bit more differentiation between some of the factions but its still a great game

@@lugotorix6173 It definitely is. In fact, my two favourite (unmodded) Total War experiences are Barbarian Invasion for Rome and Age of Charlemagne for Attila.

Well, Franks and Vandals attacked me, but Hippo-Toxotai deals with them easily. Just put horse archers and light cavalry on the bridge north of Constantinople. Hide your troops on top of each other. Huns on the other hand, I just abandoned my Capital (which they did not attacked) and let them wreak havoc on Thassalonika.

Thanks for this guide, I have been playing Rome TW for years but this is my first time that I’m using the Sarmatians, I figured when Remastered came out to try a faction that I’m not comfortable with or I never used and knowing where the Vandals and Huns spawn because I’ve played the game for a while I got unlucky because both the Vandals and Huns hit me at the same time and crushed my horde besides 1 General who I got outta Campus Sarmatae but yeah I think I’ll just try to move south towards Rome because whenever I try and retake Campus Sarmatae the Huns come back to fight me

Glad to hear that, it's a fun campaign!

Sarmatian armored horse archers are the best horse archers in the game. Fast moving and great stamina. They beat elite Hunnic horse archers.

My first campaign in brabarian invasion was with the sarmatians and I stood my ground in the starting position. I got attacked by 4 hordes: vandals, huns, goths and roxolani and pretty much wiped them out by sallying every turn. It took quite long time and I became very good at commanding cavalry while doing it, but I was broke when it was over. However constantinople was pretty undefended so the I took it a soon as the hordes were destroyed and started immediately building high tech troops and then just steam rolled the map.

@@ari3903 I was playing on normal difficulty though. I don't like the harder difficulties because they brake the balance between the units with all the cheats they gave to the AI so the battles play very differently and I don't find it fun.

@@witalian1 even if you played on very easy, beating 4 hordes as sarmatians is no small feat

@@ari3903 I had build wall on my town and was under siege almost all the time. However when I sally the AI is very passive so I just shoot all my missiles and take all targets of opportunity with my generals then go back behind my walls and beat them next turn when they launch the assault on the city just to be besieged again the next turn by the other stacks.

@@ari3903 Sometimes to beat the assault I only needed to burn their rams and that really helped when there were more than one stack on the battlefield which I would not be able to handle. But when you destroy their siege equipment you win the battle and they brake the siege so you have 1 turn to build some units before they besiege you again. And the only units worth building at that point are archers and horse archers. You can use all their missiles during sally and then bring them back behind the walls and for mele I was using my generals since their bodyguard regenerates each turn. I was using them mostly for hunting the enemy archers and cavalry.

You touched on it with the port, but a more in-depth guide on the building trees would be useful. I know the Romans have a lot of options, the Huns I believe much less so.

Yeah I agree. I've already recorded the next few guides, but I'll certainly think about it in the future!

Getting rid of the burgundii or the lombardi hordes with the samrations is the easiest thing in the world. I wiped them out with just 4 general's bodyguard units.

@@witalian1 historians seem to have an disaccord about the place of Sarmatians, Scythians and Alans. Because there are both Indo European and Ural Altai influence in there, both cultures keep moving around, and it's very hard to differentiate specific borders and uniqueness of cultures. I mean there are both Alan villages on France and Anatolia, Sythians and Sarmatians live in same places at same time.

@@witalian1 Well, it makes more sense to classify them under Alans first, rather than sarmatians. Roxolanni means White Alan in Germanic.

"Sythians and Sarmatians live in same places at same time" I have heard that the sarmatians were also called royal scythians, which implies they are a scythian tribe. I didn't know the thing you mention about the roxolani and alans. Thanks for the info.

I love this faction and hate this faction. I find this campaign the most difficult by far; far worse than the WRE. AMAZING units, probably the best in the game statistically, but poor early economic potential, ridiculous victory conditions, and the WORST starting position of any faction, worse even than the Alemanni, but at least the Sarmatians can horde.

But you can horde. Your location doesn't matter when you horde. Just rush to a secure position like Iberia.

@@hannibalburgers477 Yeah, you can horde on turn one and get two whole stacks of runaway slave spearmen. Good luck destroying the Huns and the Vandals with that while you take your 5000 turn walk from Campus Samaratae to Iberia, and good luck taking the victory objectives on the other side of the map from Iberia.

Just wait for home to be seized, sally out, use all ammo, retreat in walls, exit out of battle, draw. Rinse and repeat until no more vandals and huns.
