    Something a lot of people don’t realize when they first watch King of Comedy is the ambiguity even stretches to whether or not his mom is even alive. You hear her voice, but in his stand up, he says his mom is dead. So is she actually dead, and he’s just imagining her, or is she alive, and he’s pretending she’s dead for his comedy? I don’t know which is creepier, and that’s why I fucking love this movie. 10/10

    J.D. Laney whaaaat. I noticed we never saw the mom, and I interpreted Scorsese did that intentionally because it showed how narcissistic Rupkin was given that we see this film from his point of view. Edit: But it is an interesting thing you pointed out. Will keep in mind on a second watch.

    Many scenes, his character was dreaming of himself being the "King" especially the ending 1) No one gets only 2yrs in jail for kidnapping. 2) Its 1982 - no internet, iphones, cable tv. Most only had 7 channels, so people would forget who he was after a month. 3) Even the cops said they would arrest whoever wrote his horrible jokes. 4)Just like many sitting in jail right now, he's a King in his own mind. Movie proves guys with huge egos are more dangerous than guys with low self esteem.

    I hate to be that guy but in joker the murders aren’t what prompted the riots it’s Thomas Wayne’s reaction and dehumanisation of the lower class, he literally gets on the tv and calls the lower class a bunch of clowns (which I do agree is a bit too on the nose).

  • @theunknowncorps22

    I really disagree with you on the Joker. The film's underlying societal tensions are established in the movie with "the garbage strike" which is mentioned at one point (and shown w/ all the garbage lying around the city) and the growing poverty and anger which is intensified by the killing of the 3 three wall street a-holes in the train scene. Thomas Wayne's inflammatory comments are also what help set things off. As far as your criticism ( 33:40) goes about the film not making sense with the explosion of tensions here's a real world example: the Arab spring was triggered by a man (Mohamed Bouaziz) setting himself on fire in front of a police station after being beaten up for refusing to bribe the police over a permit. Real life has at times been close to what is presented in the film. With growing wealth inequality and ecological disaster in the future aspects of the film are increasingly relevant.

  • @danbam3411

    @danbam3411

    4 жыл бұрын

    Christian Tompkins that’s really not a criticism. in that case, they might as well rate Reservoir Dogs the same because Quentin Tarantino basically nicks off of Stanley Kubrick’s The Killing. Same thing with True Romance which is basically his own version of Terrence Malick’s Badlands, even going as far as to copying the music from the latter. And then we might as well add Brian de Palma in that list since Dressed to Kill was essentially Psycho in his own retelling. Honestly, I felt the boys misinterpreted the movie a little too much and didn’t pay attention close enough. And so did you.

    Is “burning oneself in front of a police station” the sort of thing that happens thousands of times a year? Homicides in NYC were incredibly common at that time, and this just seemed to be random death, not a purposeful protest killing with a message attached.

    @Christian Tompkins The rich vs the poor story didn't start in the 80's. It was already more than 100 years old by then and it was still timeless, as long as the disparity between the rich and poor is a reality it will still be mined for more stories in the future.

  • @RonnieJamesDeodorant
    @RonnieJamesDeodorant4 жыл бұрын

    It showed plenty of things happen to Joker besides getting beat up? Ralph lists a few of them, but two scenes of getting beat weren't terrible. The behavior of the kids seemed cheap, give more of a reason to hurt him, or don't have everyone else attacking him in that group. But he loses his job, and everyone starts viewing him as a threat because a 'friend" gave him the gun, then sold him out. He's constantly ignored by his therapist, loses what little treatment he had to live on, and was mocked for finally pursuing his dreams. Just while he was on stage and there was dead silence you felt bad for him. And he had two whole identity twists that he found out when he was 40 years old or something. So to say they only physically beat him up and it was empty or cheap isn't very honest.

    I disagree. He murdered the three guys on the subway before these revelations. It is also implied he enjoyed it and was sexually aroused by it, again, before all of these revelations. He felt no remorse (but I get it, they were beating him up). I feel like if he snapped and killed them after the plot points you mentioned, it would be a bit better developed. It felt really out of order to me at least.

Combine that with his currently already sucky lot in life, being cornered with thugs beating him up after already having it done to him prior, I can absolutely imagine him snapping and firing a gun on them before reveling in the release and individual like him would get from it. I just saw it as a major step in his fall. He's now already committed murder in his own twisted form of self defense, so later on he views it as something he can use to lash out fully and intentionally.

    I think Joker was immediately arrested and taken to Arkham after the shooting. The riot, the breakout, and the Waynes getting murdered was all Arthurs fantasy. That makes more sense to me than a shooting kicking off a riot, and rioters stealing an ambulance and knowing which patrol car to T-bone, the cops dying but Arthur being relatively Ok, and Arthur somehow ending up in custody anyway.

Same thing with True Romance which is basically his own version of Terrence Malick’s Badlands, even going as far as to copying the music from the latter. And then we might as well add Brian de Palma in that list since Dressed to Kill was essentially Psycho in his own retelling. And the answer would be, yes. Just because WE know who the Wayne family outside the movie doesn't mean the scene was ruined that's just bs reasoning. And that pretentious instance of saying the movie is just "okay" gets me everytime and makes my blood boil, because in every level the move is at least above average. And for that reason alone it stands out more than "okay". And some aspects of the movie like the superb acting of Joaquin and the cinematography make the movie stand out as at least pretty good.

    Tbh I think I would have enjoyed if there wasn't a meeting with Bruce Wayne or if it showed his parents being shot from the view of their shadows without showing anyone go into the alley after them. At the same time they didn't even realize the guy with Bruce was Alfred, which I'd say was subtle, but then whined not knowing if it was him or not then dismissed it. But Sardonicast are the same people to complain about solo Marvel / DC-related stuff not being linked to a bigger universe.

    Tbh I don't really understand the point of "if you removed all the stuff to do with batman, this wouldn't be a batman movie" type criticism. Wayne is clearly seen as someone Joker can envy and focus his (in his mind) justified sense of rage upon. The Waynes are in that way integral to the plot. You could make it someone else and it would have less atachment to Batman, but by the same token you could make Batman a vigilante in Nolans trilogy and drop the costume and it wouldn't be a Batman movie. I mean, surely we want our comic book movies to function as independent stories, rather than solely relying on the established characters to draw us in.

    That's the thing. They are criticizing something that isn't even brought up that much in the movie. So do you want it to be original or do you want it to be a Martin Scorsese-esque movie? The combination of it being a DC movie and the media garbage has soured the whole thing kinda unfairly. Adum even asking about if people with mental illness should see it or not was pretty ridiculous. Just like Alex, I found the meming of Joker to be annoying and confusing, so I just ignored it, but Alex just chooses to meme it himself, cause apparently that one line is super funny? Honestly this whole conversation just kinda irritated me. I watched the movie and it was pretty good, not perfect but above average, but a lot of critics I follow almost seem against the movie itself or embarrassed to like it. The recent JAR podcast about was kinda aweful for this reason. Alex all but refused to talk about Joker at all after five minutes as if it's another cookie-cutter super hero schlock blockbuster, when it's pretty much the exact opposite. It's like he saw the trailer and the twitter memes and simultaneously forgot that the Jokers best scenes from the Nolan movies where the ones without Batman or any other major characters in them. All and all, I'm not sure how well the critical reception of this movie will age even five years from now when we're back to giant blue lasers firing into space. Seems like a good movie fell into our laps and we're brushing it off like a spider.

    The purpose of the flashbacks after the reveal that the relationship was in his head wasn't to make sure people were getting it. The purpose of them was to show the audience that Arthur wasn't merely imagining the relationship along with all with all the scenarios laid in bed, but he was actually, physically and verbally talking to himself, not unlike when we see him doing so when he is dancing in his house early on in the film. i can’t believe you guys couldn’t find more to discuss with Joker. you didn’t delve into the themes, the details, the messages, at all. why do you guys bother making a film podcast when you aren’t willing to really grapple with the content of the film?

    Fight Club was an excellent film that a lot of people still "feel" and talk about to this day, and the media did demonize it because it was apparently connected to Columbine? Somehow? I don't think Joker was nearly as good but I still really enjoyed it.

    (After rewatching the scene) - yeah, you have a point - the first two were not just in front of him, but standing _above_ him lying on the floor and didn't expect any danger. Still - it's great luck. It took Arthur four shots to kill all the three (the third man trying to escape), and he fired exactly seven times. The first man got one bullet, the second one got two (and probably needed only one to be killed - they hit the same spot), the third one was wounded, tried to escape and was killed on the stairs with the fifth bullet - or the sixth - or the seventh.

    I'm actually surprised because I agree with you guys on most things, I actually disagree with your stance on Joker. First off it's been proven that things like this movie are not what inspire criminals to do terrible things. Second, while I agree that it definitely drew inspiration from Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy, but it certainly wasn't derivative, and it wasn't any less subtle than other art films you guys love like First Reformed or 12 Years a Slave in terms of it's message or political theme. I think the film was still it's own thing, and surprisingly even though I like King of Comedy, I don't like it as much as Joker. I feel like King of Comedy thinks it's lot better than it actually is, I think they were less subtle in terms of how sad it is than even Joker. I didn't get as much out of King of Comedy because I think the story doesn't have that much going on, and I think Joker has much more going for it personally. But I get where you guys are coming from and I'm probably in the minority, this is probably a controversial opinion. But I will say Joker and King of Comedy aren't even close to being as good as Taxi Driver imo.

    Male Tears It’s almost like its a movie about the joker. Forced subplot...where did they force that in? He thought Wayne was his ducking dad that’s a good reason to include the Wayne’s in the story and then the family gets killed. They gave the Wayne’s a reason to actually be on crime alley..joker and Batman born on the same day message... Everyone was told prior to the release it’s going to take bits and pieces from comics but this is a JOKER movie not a Batman movie.
