I don't particularly see a clear connection with 'Do you hear the people sing' but the mood abruptly shifts from melancholy and a sense of foreboding to cheerfulness right at 2:08. Reminds me of celtic music.

Why does the time signature say 6/8 on bar 3, when the rest of the music is clearly 4/4? Hidden time signature change in the multi-measure rest, I guess.

I agree, I've found that many of his more well known pieces are well known for a reason. Pieces like zapateado and gypsy airs sound much better than some of his other pieces.

Probably one of Sarasate’s least interesting pieces, mimicking the monotonicity of a hunter’s horn, lacking harmonic riches or exuberant melodies, more like an étude.
