I had the honor to play piano for Sass for a few years. And I'm on this concert except when she played. it was a pretty extensive tour through europe. And I've got to say that playing for her and sharing the stage with this great artist was probably one of the most gratifying events of my career. And to this day I still miss her. Frank

Is that you, Frank Collette? (Sorry if I botched the spelling) In the Fall semester of senior year of college - October, 1985 :) - my then-girlfriend and I drove down from upstate NY for the second year in a row to hear Sarah Vaughan at the Blue Note. We sat right below you. I remember a ballad - pretty sure it was "Here's Rainy Day", but not 100% - and in one of her choruses, she started changing keys, seemingly at random (maybe it was a series of substitutions, my ears and education weren't quite "there" yet), while looking at you sideways, with a smart aleck glances, and you stayed with her! We two were riveted by your concentration, and watched your reading glasses slide down and then nearly off. You managed to grab them and then put the down without missing a beat or a chord change. You can be sure we told every one of our professors back up in music school. I told the Jazz program head that what I'd heard and seen that weekend scared and intimated me. "I'm getting a degree this year!" I complained. "Should this be happening at this stage of my life?" "Yes," he said. "That degree isn't the end, it's the very beginning. If you're smart and lucky, there will be things that you'll hear and go, 'huh?', and then you'll learn about them and grow some more. Frank Collette is a magnificent piano player, so you were lucky to hear him, and with Sarah Vaughan? That was a semester of school right there!" Do I remember correctly that it was Andy simpkins and HHarold Jones with you? Cheers!

@@luvmyrecords RIP Frank Collett, sadly. In 1985, he played both in Europe (as above, and on the OBLIGATORY "Live In The City of Lights" double CD - outta' sight - same tour), and Japan - here on KZread as "Live At Satin Doll, Tokyo" - this, though, is the excellent Bob Maize on bass - but, I believe, Andy Simpkins was may be on the Tokyo dates. He certainly returned to the trio - I know that - along with the fantastic Harold Jones (of Count Basie fame - now on the road, TO THIS DAY, with Tony Bennett!). George Gaffney was the regular piano player, though (and GREAT TOO!).

Short story, I first became aware of this gem in 1957 i heard "what a difference a day makes" I fell in love with the way she embellished a note, In the 1980s she was due to perform at "yoshi's" in Oakland ,Ca she cancelled I later heard she had transitioned. What a incredible talent. One love.

Wow, this is such a treat for me. Ms. Vaughn's voice is very much like my aunt's beautiful voice (who birthed my cousin; Professor Ed Gooch, of Detroit, MI; he partnered with my father in teaching me to play piano). My Aunt Clara, Ed's mom, also plays piano, wonderfully. Ms. Vaughn's outstanding vocals have intrigued me over the decades, but I never knew that she played the piano! Oh, what a treat!! Her beautiful, chocolate skin adds the icing to her wonderful personality, also. Thank you, "diva" Ms. Vaughn. We love you!!

Wow, Even I knew that! Sarah Vaughn and Nina Simone were known for playing the piano and their performance of Jazz. Nina Simone was a Classical trained pianist from the age of 4. My parent's and relatives would play the albums of the icons of this Era. A few of the albums showed her sitting at the piano! Some of the female Jazz Icon's during that era were Dinah Washington, Esther Phillips, Sarah Vaughn, Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald!! It is very surprising that you were fascinated by her voice over the decades but obviously never studied her background in depth!!! Why didn't the Professor , his mother and your father tell you about this Magnificent ,Talented Jazz Musician? At some point her outstanding ability to play the piano should have been discussed.

No one can deny Sarah Vaughn and Esther Phillips talents! Both were Classically trained, who performed All over the world with different bands and Orchestras. Aretha Franklin and Dinah Washington can be included as well. In MY Opinion, what distinguished them from a lot of today's performers is the ability to play an Instrument, not just sing! This put these 4 ladies in a category by themselves!! The Musical Industry has changed so over the past 40 years and NO real talent is demanded! A "Look" on stage and selling'SEX' thus getting an award. From Madonna, Celine Dion Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, ADELE, Beyonce, Rihanna, Mary J Blige and the list goes on, showing their flesh and this is what world wants to see!

It’s funny how you used some of the few genuinely talented singers still around as examples of why the music industry is awful. It is awful now, but you really weakened your point using people like Whitney Houston, Mary J Blige, Adele, etc who are actually good vocalists.
