I'm happy to say that that's me on piano! And I must say also that even to this day, it was always a great pleasure to play for this wonderful artist. And she was just as wonderful on stage as well as off. I still love her even to this day just as much as back in the eighties when I played for her. Frank Collett

I just googled his name and it appears that Frank Collett died last year in January of 2016. Frank, you have so much to be proud of and your work and music will live on forever, just like Sarah's. www.artsjournal.com/rifftides/2016/01/frank-collett-rip.html

Frank was the best. Knew him for years. He wrote some charts for me that were marvelous. Wonderful talent.
Can anyone else here see the link between Miss Sarah and Whitney? They were both equipped with extraordinary talent and a sublimely thrilling, one off voice and range, but for me the connection goes further. Both reimagined the structure and timbre of notes and cadences, defying what writers may have had in mind - but the beauty is that both did it organically, on the spot...as if their voice was actually rewriting the songs they interpreted. If the Lord made anything better than these two talents...he kept it to himself. RIP Miss Sarah RIP Whitney...and thank you xx
I love her so much it hurts how I wish I could have seen her
Sassy was simply the ultimate jazz diva, though from my experience she was a very humble and beautiful spirit. My indelible memory of her is that after starting a standing ovation for her mere months before her passing in 1990, she locked eyes with me to thank me, and then came back to me again before the ovation ended. I will cherish that moment forever, and it gives me chills just to type these words now. You are much loved, Sarah - then, now, and always.

No, Miss Vaughan's final appearances were in NYC, 1989, as chronicled on Wiki: " During a run at New York's Blue Note Jazz Club in 1989, she received a diagnosis of lung cancer and was too ill to finish the final day of what would turn out to be her final series of public performances." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarah_Vaughan

That is sad, Ed; that same year in SF Sassy did play The Great American Music Hall and I was able to see her from the front table. She was battling a cold and did "Poor Butterfly" as a showcase instead of "Send In the Clowns," but it was a mesmerizing performance just the same. Better yet, I was the first to stand up at the set's conclusion, and we locked eyes two times as she mouthed "thank you" to me the first. Unforgettable.
Lucky you! I love Sarah...the one and only...the best! Oh you rock too!
She is a real vocalist we may never get another singer with such a deep rich beautifully rare voice like hers miss you sassy

I once heard Pamela Hart sing something like her in Austin, Texas but that's the only time I've ever heard anyone come close;...
Sat on a tour bus with her 1957 Jazz at the Phil after a concert in Bournemouth UK. A very beautiful lady, very humble and a voice to die for.Never forget it.

Wow! NOW THAT'S A MEMORY...PRICELESS. And, precious. Bless you.
Unlike Billie, Ella, Carmen, even Nancy, there was one singer who had the pipes and strength of will to combat ailments (including smoking) and go out at the very top of her game. She emerged as the greatest jazz singer of the 20th century, and no one's come close since (Roberta Gambarini is the most promising, but where has the audience gone?). What Sarah had discovered was a genuine find: a pianist practically unheard of--Frank Collett. They shared a musical sensibility that was a source of inspiration to Sarah night after night. She threw caution to the wings and insisted on an ex-Basie drummer--Harold Jones--to show up with sticks and give her as much heat and drive as he had. Sarah's 1985 2-disc album, "In the City of Lights," amounts to the last landmark album by an American jazz diva. No cameras were present for that occasion, so it's a real treasure to have this one with the same group. But I doubt even Sarah would have acquired this kind of confidence and power had it not been for her early period in the Billy Eckstine band, standing in front of Bird, Stitt, Jug, Dexter, Diz, Miles, Fats and J.J.--and the indomitable force of nature himself on drums, Art Blakey. That's some schooling!
Thank you Sassy for everything

The last take “Tea for two “is very very beautiful!! I have searched this take for a long time. Many many thanks uprooting.
So often the physical make-up of the survivors is a key to their dominance. Bill Evans was a piano-playing mechanism designed by DaVinci--broad shoulders and the thickest fingers ever to be seen on a hand--complete control, dead accuracy and the ability to go from ppp to fff in a beat. Sarah's built like the Wagnerian sopranos who could be heard over 100 string players for a 5-day performance of the Ring. Sassy was one of true first class wonders of the natural world.
she was the best with constructing a song with her voice instead of the song constructing her & her voice. She controlled and truly built the songs. But in a way like no other

SARAH was outstanding in a class by here self!
That acapella part in Someone Who'll Watch Over Me ! Wow !
Sarah is the best , so wounderful, I am ready to hear she every day !
Hugs and kisses to you in heaven, Ms Vaughn.
That’s a badass jazz man who runs every chord with. Her voice....
The lady of jazz vocals.
If I am listening to a Miss Sarah Vaughn piece, I feel I am super rich, so classy, so discriminating, so refined.
Fabulous, thanks alot for this, 40 years of listening to her does not diminish her as exquisite and so touching, No 1 for me.
Her voice was so rich during the years she recorded for Pablo. The two Ellington albums, and especially "Crazy and Mixed Up, " are musts for any fan of her voice and interpretive skills. This was a marvelous concert. I only wish that I had taken the opportunity to see her live when I had the chance to. Thanks for the post.

More than 10 years ago I had lost my way at night in Fuji City. All I could see was the snow-covered summit of Mt. Fuji whose lower part was Invisible. It looked like a giant starfish floating above my head. It scared me. How releaved it was to find a light in the long distance. It was Jazz record-shop. The owner showed me the way back to my hotel. In return for his kindness I bought Sarahs CD including Make This City(Fuji City)Ours Tonight. Sarahs voice was magically poweful enough to mbke the ghost with a white mant start sliding and dancing in the sky sea.

Divina Sarah! Muito obrigado, Marco.
Thank you so much for this precious video. When she talked of "Indian Summer' as Count Basie's favorite, it reminded me of her album with the CBO and all the songs on the album that her reworking of just about every song could be arguably their definitive version. This video keeps Sarah very alive for me.

Man, Sassy was IT... So many of today's so-called "divas" need to listen closely. First, it isn't necessary to SCREAM at your audience.. So many female singers who have powerful voices, use them at full power all the time, with no thought for DYNAMICS. Power is only appreciated when it's used as CONTRAST, as an EFFECT. Also, learn piano/theory/harmony so you can use your voice as a saxophone or trumpet.. So you can scat, embellish, work around the melody by exploring the harmonies behind it. Just "singing the song" doesn't cut it.. Listen to this stuff with your deepest soul, then listen to yourself, and fill in the blanks..
@buffalmacco76 Do you know if this is on DVD or something? Is it the same as her 'Live In Japan' album somehow?

@buffalmacco76 what would be cool if we had all the concerts from The Satin Doll.. that way you can compare nights just like the Ella in London 74 Sessions...
@newstart2009 There's a lot of confusion about these concerts in Tokyo '85 just because her dress. Sarah aften used the same dress in the second night of her show ( she was superstitious about that). I have both shows but I don't know the concerts of october 14. I will find out if it's true or not.
What is that tune at 39:47 Dippy wa? lol
