Sarah Nichols - Cumberland Gap fretless minstrel banjo

Музыка

In case you're wondering why I almost never post videos: millions of children and a sleep-deprived brain that clearly can't remember the proper lyrics to any of these songs. 😂

Folks have been playing and singing around their kids for centuries, and I know it can be a pain, but those sounds can also give a huge breath of life to a video like this; we see and hear a real human being, playing real music, in her real life, and it's refreshing to experience that in this age of editing and mastering everything we record. You played this song very well, and gave it a soul :)

What Daniel said - you playing your videos in real life makes them so much more awesome!! I'm a fan and totally inspired! I don't have kids to put in my videos, but maybe I'll try chickens or goats or something :o)

This reminds me of growing up in Knoxville and hearing bluegrass at the county fairs, watching the mules press sorghum into syrup, and running around the woods. Great memories to look back on, especially when you're far from home. Thanks for the great song!

You're allowed 10 mistakes per small child and didn't come anywhere near that. It's a beautiful arrangement.

It's awesome you play banjo around your kids. Their growing brains soak in all this wonderful music and it can stick with them their whole lifetime. You are sharing a great gift, one that may be passed on to future generations too :)

This is beautiful. Even though I'm not from anywhere close to appalacia or have any connection to the history of the banjo, songs like Cumberland Gap always make me feel nostalgic and homely.

Sarah, I love that you are playing during a normal day full of kids. Keep doing these! i do childcare also, and my time for recording is very limited, but you and I have to continue to play, produce and post these performances. Never stop doing this! By the way, my ancestors on mother's side come from eastern KY, so this touches my heart. We sang so many of the folk and mountain songs growing up.

This was really lovely to listen to - that's a very soothing-sounding banjo tone, and it's equally as soothing to hear you sing it - wonderful!

This is how all musical cultural heritages should be learnt and passed on from one generation to the next. Inherited without being aware of it and completely unconciously. Musical breast milk DNA. It's what makes it worthy of the name traditional. Please allow me a request on behalf of not just myself but many, many more I'm sure.. Having filled us all with aural joy for three minutes or so, don't be shy, please round them off with a punctuating, reinforcing smile to echo the one you've put on all our faces!

Schuylemagne One of the defining beauties of oldtime music is its perpetuation in the sharing of "secrets"; fear not! 😜 I learned it by ear from a Clifton Hicks recording, I'm pretty sure. Probably here on KZread but possibly from one of his records.
