Saracen Archery: 3 arrows in 1 ½ seconds.

Спорт

This video is old and there is an Updated video
"Reinventing the fastest forgotten archery."
• Reinventing the fastes...
which also tries to answer many of the questions people have asked for this video.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I show it is possible to shoot 3 arrows at 1 ½ seconds.
The first part of the video I shoot my old speed
in the second part of the video I shoot 3 arrows at 1 ½ seconds.
The book "Saracen Archery" An English translation of a Mameluke work on archery, written in the year 1368.
In this book are 3 test as ancient archers should be able to do:
1. A target test
2. A test of power of bow
3. And a test to show whether the archer was fast enough !
To pass the speed test, required to be able to shoot 3 arrows at less than 1 ½ seconds.
(third arrow must be in the air before the first arrow hits the target,
distance 60 bows = 69 meters, we can then calculate the time to 1 ½ seconds)
The test is measured by seeing the dust from the first arrow! this is important because it means that the arrows must fly in a straight line towards the ground, otherwise there will not be enough dust that you can see at 60 bows distance (I have tested this) if you shoot the arrows high in the air, it takes longer for the arrow to reach, but then there is no dust to be seen.
At 60 bows distance an arrow fly almost straight
so either it should shoot straight or high into the air.
If the arrow is shot up into the air then the 60 meter distance does not make sense nor dust,
then it would be written: "shoot the arrow up in the air and see when the arrow hits the ground."
The last 3 years I have seriously trained to see how fast it is possible to shoot with bow, I try to find a speed limit but have not found it yet.
Comments on my videos
I remove: profanity, stupid and not funny comments, childish criticism,
but I would like to have sensible adult criticism.
sincerely
Lars Andersen

I can hold 9-14 arrows simultaneously (depending on type) and when they are shot I can draw the same number of arrows out of my quiver in one motion and immediately begin to shoot. I am against shooting techniques where it is necessary first to put arrows in a certain way before you can shoot. I am convinced that historical war archers do not have the time to first adjust the arrows, they have necessarily just caught and shot immediately. sincerely Lars Andersen

The two bows were designed for different methods of combat, the Mongolian recurves and other such bows were designed for mobility and agility, while the longbows were designed for power and range, both were deadly weapons in hands of soldiers trained for them. I hope this helps you people!

My point in a simple line: *Give Longbowmen Mongolian recurve ones and we would have all speak English and praying to Jesus. * Long bows SUCK. Draw weight is heavy but it isn't as efficient as the Mongolian and having less range too. Ancient Mongol warriors were known to be "effective" up to ~400m (even better than a Marine at 300m with his M4), and yes of course, foot archers only. And talking about efficiency, no bow can compare with Turkish or Korean bows. They're really good, small but pack a mean punch for their sizes, just like dicks - despite how small they're they can all still get women pregnant - and tough also. The Mongolian bows were too well adapt to the steppes's dry, harsh, brutal, sudden hot and cold environment that they broke in South Asia's constantly hot and damp weather. Longbow was much more simply made in the other hand. It could be mass produced easier, therefore giving the (many more) archers more time to practice. It was more like a weapon of war, not the means to make archery an art. . I respect each and every one of them in case you're thinking I hate any. Different bows, different methods, used by different people, for different purpose. They're all great in their own ways. I feel we have no need to start a "Mine is superb to yours" debate here as in many archery videos I've seen so far.

No one knows how the Mongols shot with a bow! they did not have a written language. so even though the Mongols probably was some of history's best archers it is impossible to imitate them. I do not know much about English archers so I could be wrong !! Was the English longbowmen particularly good, or is it just because of Robbin Hood myth? They beat the French who are not used bows but crossbow. Saracens were certainly not impressed by the English archers. regards Lars Andersen

If you read Chinese ancient history about war against mongols they where huge people that shoot with bows that had massive curve on them and it could been the type of wood they were using . They shooting eagles out of the sky about 350 yards up. There’s paintings on them.how far? 350 yards maybe even more. There’s stories in mythical Chinese stories where they hit two eagles with one arrow. That’s how good they were. They re just like you but in thousands . Imagine a whole army of you. They dominated China Russia to Europe with an army of you.

Usually damage is calculated per round, and I think his bow is only +1, so i'd say 12d6+12 dpr, which is quite a punch. I'm here asuming he can continue the 0,5s speed. I have not observed his reload rate, so the dpr is probably less ;-)

An incredible lot of times ! When the goal is simply to push the speed limit then there will be obvious all the time a lot of miss. Every time I increase the speed decreases the accuracy, until I get the hang of it But when I lower the speed a bit, so I hit the target. As I shoot faster and faster, so the speed in which I always hit also becomes faster and faster. Shooting from about seven yards, his arrows are taking just under half a second to reach the target, on average. To spell this out, that means his arrows are flying at about forty-two feet per second... 28.6 miles per hour! I did not know that arrows could fly that slowly and still stick into anything. Given that, if he's using standard "light" arrows (why not?) that would be around 359 grains in weight. Meaning that his arrows are hitting with a force of 1.37 foot pounds of energy. They are "carrying" 2.1 pounds of momentum. His rate of fire is stellar.

And I think that's exactly the secret of why he's so fast: learn to shoot straight from a pile of arrows in your hand, instead of drawing one at a time from a quiver. That's a whole new skill to learn, and I think it's awesome that Lars Anderson managed to reconstruct this technique. As for the Russian girl, I'd love to see what she can do with some lessons from Lars Anderson. She is very fast and fluid. It's just the one arrow at a time that's holding her down.

  • @steveecker

@MarcAnMod he is very skilled, and I'm impressed. I believe he's holding the three arrows in his left hand (the hand holding the bow), aligned with the arrows trajectory (flat), so all he has to do is pull the string back and align it with the notch and release. That would give him plenty of time (with practice! it's still fast!!!) to fire the arrows accurately and on the move, because he won't need to pull the arrow from a quiver and set it to the bow. It's already there...

If you want to look up these amazing archers and their equipment then look up the battles of hastings, and the hundred year war. They also understood their limits with the bow and often "faked out" using the normal arrows to draw them in and then using the bodkin Arrowhead (because it flew longer distances). Now I'm a little rusty on the hundred year war but i hope to have helped you. The 100 year war is an amazing topic and you could learn quite a bit if you wanted.

It's not an examination, it's a personal test to see if you are good enough. It is just to do with your speed at loading/shooting arrows to see if you have the dexterity.

Im in the same boat as you. I figure when push comes to shove those who know how to fire raw will definitely be better of than those who use compound bows etc. Btw where do you draw from?

actually i am learning about the english longbow in my military history class right now, and from what i can tell they could put an arrow through a steel helmets visor from about 30 feet away, with no issue at all. so yes the individual bowman was a very good shot. and not only were the bows amazing with range and accuracy, they also came with if i can recall my class 2 different types of arrows. The hunting arrow, the Badkin arrow (practically the first armor piercing ammunition).

Can you do this with Lumenok arrows? Would be nice to see how the arrows are going / where they're at as you do this.

I shoot traditional bows myself, and the only comment I have is, you are very good! I'm quite impressed! Okay, I guess that was two comments. By the way, what is the draw weight of the bow you are using?

The mongols did keep a written record. After the conquest of China and Persia, they had to rule a very large empire and developed an educated class. It is unfortunate that the Chinese probably burned most court documents after the fall of the Yuan Dynasty, but some stories do remain (I can't read them). Also, the Saracens seemed to be more impressed by the lack of effect their arrows had on Frankish troops than by the skills of western archers.

Week into archery here, Grizzly Bear Recurve one piece. How are you notching the arrows so quickly? I can get my aim up in about three seconds with decent accuracy, but notching it is what kills my time.

I tried this a bit and i think i figured it out but it was very tricky nocking the arrows in a smooth fashion. Where do you hold the spare arrows, like in front of the fletching, by the fletching, or by the nocks?
