Big Finish’s acclaimed audio dramas based on the ITV Studios sci-fi/fantasy series Sapphire & Steel are now available to buy as downloads for the first time.
All irregularities will be handled by the forces controlling each dimension. Transuranic, heavy elements may not be used where there is life. Medium atomic weights are available: Gold, Lead, Copper, Jet, Diamond, Radium, Sapphire, Silver and Steel.

Sapphire & Steel, created by P. J. Hammond, was originally broadcast between 1979 and 1982. It starred Joanna Lumley and David McCallum as a pair of “interdimensional operatives” tasked with protecting the flow of time. Each story would see them take human form as they showed up in a new location, to investigate a dangerous anomaly.
Between May 2005 and August 2008, Big Finish released 15 full-cast audio dramas based on the TV series. The late David Warner took on McCallum’s part to play the stubborn Steel, whilst Susannah Harker slipped into Lumley’s role as Sapphire.
For three of the audio stories, original TV guest star David Collings returned to recreate his performance as Silver. Other notable guest stars in the range included Mark Gatiss, Colin Baker, Sarah Douglas, Richard Franklin, Angela Bruce, Arthur Bostrom and Louise Jameson.
The audio series was only ever released on CD and has been unavailable for more than a decade.
Now, in association with ITV Studios, all three series have been re-released as downloads, giving fans the chance to relisten or indeed discover the adventures for the first time.
Each series comes packaged with a brand-new 30-minute behind-the-scenes featurette, offering an insight into the production of these beloved adventures.
All three series are available to buy at an exclusive early-bird price for the first month; Series One (comprising five stories) is available for just £19.99, Series Two (comprising six stories) is just £24.99, and Series Three (four stories) is £19.99.
Big Finish chairman Jason Haigh-Ellery said: “We are delighted to have reached an agreement with ITV Studios to bring back our Sapphire & Steel releases as downloads. We have received regular requests over the years for it to be made available again, so we’re pleased that a whole new generation of listeners will be able to hear the late, great David Warner as Steel and Susannah Harker as Sapphire.”
Nigel Fairs, who produced the series, added: “I’m absolutely delighted that people will be able to hear our version of Sapphire & Steel again, as it really was a labour of love. Re-imagining such a visual television series for audio was no easy task, but I think my decision to concentrate on the emotional story arcs of the characters who encountered ‘Time’ and our two agents bore some really tasty fruit! Dear David and Susie were the perfect leads, and the recording sessions were amongst the happiest I ever had at Big Finish. Creative times indeed. ‘Roll back time, Sapphire…’”

This what got me into Big Finish. I bough the frist CD from a shop in Blackpool and the rest from the website borrowing my Dad's credit card and paying him back I even got a Sherlock Holmes story thrown in for free. This wonderful thing to do
WOW! Aside from the gift of being able to get these audios again, the reimagining of the iconic title sequence is superb.

@@danafoxconcepts Hi 👋🏼 That’s awesome. It’s really nice. Keeps the essence of the original (I feel you’d know what this was even without the music) but expanding on it in some unique ways. More than ever this makes me yearn for a TV reboot. Can just imagine it being another Moffat/Gatiss written success.
One of the strengths of the original series, apart from steller cast, was it's low budget really added an air of intimacy to the show which made it feel almost like theatre. When I bought the first 2 BF series on it's original release, I was pleased to hear a similar atempt to do this in audio form. It's facinating how the 2 new leads approach the roles. Warners take on Steel is is even more cold and grittier than McCallum on the TV (as he is much older playing the role), where as after listening to Susie's Sapphire for more than 10 minutes, it's easy to assume it's just Lumley picking up where she left off in 82. 2 amazing performances. Can't wait to finally pickup season 3 after all these years! Thanks BF!!!! 😮😀🥰👍

Fingers crossed that, if this proves to be as popular as I suspect it’s going to be, Big Finish may be able to produce one of the wonderful vinyl special editions.
I for one was delighted to find out that these were back. Even though I had the CDs, I bought the complete set of new downloads. Not a waste of money at all. Now if only all the old adventures from other series like the AD2000 Judge Dredd, Tomorrow People, and more were also to become available again. Heck, I'd like to start a new series that begins with Lead and Silver breaking Sapphire and Steel out of the trap from the end of the series. Might even include explanations for recasting.
I Love these sapphire and steel adventures! So great to see them become easily accessible again, I just wish there were more!
Wow, this is cool! Especially since I only recently found out about this series, thanks to watching Torchwood and finding out the legacy behind Peter J Hammond, who wrote the episodes Small Worlds and From Out of the Rain!

Very glad to know you have these back! I re-watched the TV series for the first time in decades a couple of years ago and was gutted to find the audios had disappeared from the BF site. Can't wait to get stuck in!

Does this mean we are going to have Sapphire & Steel downloads? Does It mean that we are going to have new seasons? Does it mean that Paul McGann will have the opportunity to play in Sapphire & Steel as he wanted? Maybe in the role of Steel, since we lost David Warner? My mind is boggling!!!!

Yes, apparently these were available only on CD before. Presumably the original license didn’t cover downloads. The production was Nigel Fairs’ baby, I don’t know if he’s still as involved in Big Finish.
