    I love almost all the colors of sapphire except the dark blue or black. My favorite is probably light yellow and pink.

    Can you do a segment/video on just lab created gemstones. Especially on how lab gems are created and the differences between say flame fusion and hydrothermal methods? Thanks.

    More hardness means less ductile. Hard to scratch a diamond, but they can shatter more easily than a less hard material that is more ductile. Airplane wings used to be made as stiff and strong as possible, but we figured out that those wings crack and break more than wings that have more spring to them, a bit more ductile, bendy rather than hard... So, for example, a sapphire might not scratch a diamond, and a diamond will scratch a sapphire, but a sapphire is probably less likely to shatter or chip if dropped on a concrete floor...

    How can I tell if my ring is a sapphire or a stimulant. And also do all sapphires color shift or change? I know sometimes it’s strong color change but I’ve seen some have more of a shift.

    Thank you. The explanation is very clear. I was so confused to why some stones were being sold for so cheap and others so expensive. I am looking for a natural not treated stone from the Earth, and I see low prices. I am skeptic to why they sell those natural stones cheaper than the treated and cut shiny sapphires. Will they be fake stones ?

    if you are seeing a natural stone being sold cheaper than a cut stone then its not a natural stone. Natural unheated and untreated stones cause 10 times more than treated stones and are usually more difficult to secure.

    Personally (and I know chemically they are the same) lab grown for me are still synthetic. a natural stone has soul but a lab grown for me have as much soul as a piece of glass. I am a small dealer in gemstones and a designer of unique jewellery. Natural stones as you rightly say are rare, generally it is not known how much rough one has to go through to get one decent cut stone (and of course recovery rates are usually only about 20- 30% of the rough) hence the cost of a natural stone is much higher but worth it. I have sapphire ruby and other species mainly untreated and if I do have a stone that has been treated I always declare the treatment (though I would not sell a stone that has had any treatment other than heating and those are unusual in my collection). Good video and interesting thank you. oh and for those that are not aware of cutting from rough. I recently had an Emerald rough of 25 grams (125 carats) to get a very nice stone we lost 120 carats in the cutting and ended up with albeit very beautiful stone of 5 carats. One would normally expect much better recovery but it does give an example of just how difficult it is to end up with a very nice cut stone.

    @@stellar9553 No it is a view shared by many in the trade. It takes millions of years to form a gemstone and huge effort to find it and produce a gemstone cut. For me buying synthetic is like buying a kit car ferrari it may look like a ferrari but it will never be one drive like one or feel like one and will depreciate rapidly whereas a real one will appreciate

    @@mikecaleta9757 also your example is totally off. I do believe there is a difference between natural and lab made… but your example is like comparing different lab processes not comparing naturally produced vs man made. A better example may be organic food vs nonorganic food, however, due to my lack of knowledge I can not say whether lab created is more ethical than naturally produced as naturally produced could result in more human exploitation. There is a reason they call them blood diamonds. If you own a blood diamond that blood is also on your hands

    @@mikecaleta9757 LOL, if buying from a jewelry store, that stone is going to drop in value faster than a hot potato. No one ever resells their jewelry for the same or higher price . It’s like buying a new car , depreciates exponentially as soon as you drive it off the lot . Lab created stones are flawless , and look just as nice the majority of the time as the “real thing” . They’re the same properties, so why would anyone pay more to have flaws ? Don’t even get me started on the ethics side of mining & selling these natural stones. So silly ! Folks, save your $$$, be ethical & buy a perfect lab grown stone so you can spend that extra money you saved elsewhere .

    Hi, can you explain why a flame fusion sapphire (3.3c to 4.5c) from chinese resaler cost just a few bucks and other's (chatham for example) for exactly the same size will cost hundreds or thousands of dollar ? I Know than the quality of the polish will be completely different and also the inclusions will also be more close to a natural gem but i don't understand why there is a so huge difference of price between them. thx !

  • @RGV250FORSALE

    @RGV250FORSALE

    It's all to do with the method used for growing the crystal in the first place. Flame fusion is the cheapest way to make a crystal - a few hours at most, while hydrothermal (Chatham - et al) - is a much slower process sometimes taking weeks or even months to grow the same crystal. Flame Fusion can be easily distinguished by lots of almost straight lines of micro bubbles within the crystal - whilst hydrothermal has inclusions and growth bands that appear more akin to a natural sapphire, and is harder to distinguish from an earth mined stone - even sometimes with a loupe. Basically the closer a synthetic stone can get to looking like an original stone - the more expensive it will be. Hydrothermal crystals/stones are more expensive than flame fusion - but not by a factor of 100's - and anyone trying to sell a 2ct to 4ct hydrothermal stone for more than a few hundred dollars is trying to pick your pocket. Hope this helps.

    Hi Renny! Great question! Lab-grown sapphires are sapphires. The only difference is that it is man-made. As long as you are purchasing it from a trusted source then it should not change colors. You clearly have no experience with lab created gems. There are a number of ways you can make a lab grown sapphire. Some take about an hour and sell as rough for a penny a carat. The best quality stones are produced by the flux growth method that requires eight to twelve months time, a solid platinum growth crucible costing hundreds of thousands, and continuous uninterrupted high temperature and careful monitoring. They are, to my knowledge, only made by Chatham Created Gemstones formerly of California.
