RIP Dave McCallum. I really enjoyed his amazing performance in this show. It haunted me for years and I still think about it from time to time. It was never remade and probably a good thing. I knew him more from this than from Man from UNCLE.

If the writing and mystery work, the music and effects become secondary if at all. Older shows really did rely more on quality characterizations, acting, and innovative scripts. And attention span. I forgot about this story and the first few minutes are padded regardless. Then comes a buildup. But by 13:45 or so the payoff is fantastic.

@vestiphobe She was very old. I'm still waiting for series 16 DVD. I live in France now so no TV. I've been a fan since they were in the JAG episode. (Always wondered who won the toss). My only complaint ever is that they got the Royal Marine's uniform completely wrong. So much so that I didn't realise he was supposed to be RM for ages. (I was in the RN). & there was a Union Jack not a White Ensign on the stern of the ship in the background. Which was the same American ship that is always there. The Union Jack goes on the bow when the ship is in Port. Much like your small flag of just the stars. (I'm presuming you are American. Apologies if not).

I bought into it, I remember the feature in Look-In mag plus the other hype that came with the amazing new series. I loved Joanna Lumley & was a fan of David McCallum. Thank you for posting this. When the series was cancelled, I was gutted, really upset. Must have been my teenage hormones kicking in, everything seemed so personal back in them days. If Netflix, HBO, BBC - anyone brought it back, no question - I would be glued to the box, every week.

Kind of big story for a YT comment but: About five years ago, I saw a twitter thread about this show and I loved the aesthetic so much that it inspired me to make a comedy series that would (lovingly) parody older sci-fi shows like this. After we filmed and edited it, we took it to festivals where I would always bring up S&S as the inspiration and source material to audiences who had (mostly) never heard of it. The series we made is out now and, yes, this is a shameless plug to watch it, but I also just wanted to come on here and express the gratitude I feel for this utterly strange and just really great show. I owe it for giving me five very cool years, a bunch of new people in my life, and a whole lot of fulfillment and artistic validation. Sapphire And Steel forever!
